I am stressed to high heaven with mine. I think it might be time for a change. What is your role and how stressful is it?

Senior finance business partner in a start up. The pay is good but working for a start up is stressful. I have to basically build my department from nothing. I’m more than qualified but on a bad day I can feel like I’m drowning

I'm sorry you're drowning in it too 😔 it's an awful feeling.

SLT Public sector, yes it’s incredibly stressful with an unachievable workload and it’s toxic with it. I’ve worked out how much I need to earn and am currently looking for jobs with up to a £20k pay cut. First job I’m offered gets me out. If it isn’t quite right I’ll take it and give it 12-18 months.

I am in a unicorn NHS service which is not stressful at all. I have an amazing clinical lead who lets us get on with it and takes as much stress off us as possible. It’s busy but runs incredibly smooth.

There is an end in sight. So it’s not too bad and the people I work with are great. My last role was even more stressful. Had me working 20 hour days at some points. The joy of hybrid working - you’re never not contactable. At least this role will give me the experience on my CV to get a bigger role next with a dream salary

I run a service business 60+ staff, most stressful thing in my life!

Have done it ten years and at times I feel has affected my health.

I'm currently pregnant and am thinking there is no way raising a child can be harder than running a business. Will soon find out....😂

Manager in a Housing Association. Has its stressful moments, but I've built a great team and overall enjoy my job.

Jorvik1978 · 23/09/2024 08:46

I'm a statistician within a research foundation. It can be busy at times, but generally not stressful. I really enjoy my role and am thankful to work here!

CosmoMango · 23/09/2024 08:49

im a vet and it’s so stressful. I genuinely feel like my life isn’t worth living at the moment so I’m doing my best to get out

HairyToity · 23/09/2024 08:50

Chartered Commercial Surveyor, stressful but over the years I've learnt to manage the stress! I didn't cope so well in my 20s. I found my specialism and changed jobs a few times. I thought about changing careers but nothing paid as well, and I worked darn hard to be Chartered.

Valherie · 23/09/2024 08:51

@CosmoMango I’m so sorry; it’s the job everyone wanted at school but wasn’t clever enough to study! Hope you find a solution, and don’t end up leaving the profession

HairyToity · 23/09/2024 08:53

@CosmoMango my cousin worked as a vet but now does something with an animal pharmaceutical company. Not sure whether there are other jobs in government organisations or research? Good luck in finding a way out.

bravotango · 23/09/2024 08:58

I work in a university, non research or teaching role. Pay for the work/life balance is brilliant, not stressed at all. Pay generally isn't fantastic but probably in line with CS. Left my research job (senior, v stressful!) for this and have NOT looked back!

TheWayTheLightFalls · 23/09/2024 08:59

I run a food bank. Busy, demanding but not stressful at all. I’m surrounded by brilliant volunteers. I used to be a solicitor - now that was stressful.

4YellowDaffodils · 23/09/2024 09:01

I used to be a family law solicitor. I hated it beyond measure.

Now I am a temp for an agency. I do whatever looks interesting. Currently I am working on a 3 month charity project. Previously I have done exam invigilation, or reception work for a few weeks or Christmas cover in a shop. I love it. I pick and choose what I want to do and I don't have to care too much or take my work home emotionally.

The pay is shit though and I need to figure out how to sort my pension. But I am relatively stress free.

ETA because I said I did reception for a year - jus t a brain fart.

I'm sorry. I have a friend who is a vet. She did large animals and finally chucked it in this year. She now works in a bookshop and loves it.

I work shifts in a police control room in a large police force. We receive the incidents from the 999/101 call handlers, triage & risk assess each job, dispatch cops, then do all the system checks on the addresses/subjects and are constantly speaking to the divisional officers and supervisors. We control (run) a radio channel which covers 2 or 3 police stations of response officers.

While I'm there, it's a very stressful job as you are making critical decisions based on threat to life and what is currently ongoing. You can be juggling a number of immediate ongoing incidents at once and the radio traffic can be super busy and it's tricky to keep up. Sometimes we have no support and no-one to call ambulance, council, call people back for more info/explain that we can't go (not enough resources/no immediacy) so it does get overwhelming and the lack of officers is a constant issue but the good thing is that it's a 24/7 service so when your shift finishes, you handover to someone else and all the stress of the day/night becomes their problem. The shifts are really hard, especially juggling them around family life.

MaryShelley1818 · 23/09/2024 09:10

I'm a children's Social Worker. Exceptionally stressful, never ending caseloads and long hours, awful misconceptions from the general public (comments on here have reduced me to tears) BUT I have a wonderful manager, the best team, and I actually love my job and the children I work with.

Rosecoffeecup · 23/09/2024 09:13

Compliance for a bank. Can be stressful at times, almost entirely due to politics and internal pressures entirely of our own making

Needanewname42 · 23/09/2024 09:15

Op why have you not said what you do?

Posters remember the whole jigsaw of information that you are giving away about yourself.

All jobs have an element of stress, individual managers can make a difference to that level of stress. Being short staffed adds stress to everyone.

It's a magical service where usual NHS pressures are more or less eliminated by effective leadership 😂Very rare and I absolutely hit the jackpot with my job.

I'm a band 6 clinician (one up from graduate entry level) in the NHS. God knows it has its moments, but in general it's a great team and I love my job (I'm on holiday this week, ask ne again next week). I'm lucky I can afford my life though, most of my colleagues at my level work an extra day moonlighting in various forms and they get pretty knackered.
