I am stressed to high heaven with mine. I think it might be time for a change. What is your role and how stressful is it?

Product Manager for a high street bank. I think I'm considered middle management. Sometimes there's stress, mostly not. It's "manageable" stress though - for me, a bit of stress brings out my best work.

I used to work in another department, @Rosecoffeecup in Compliance - how do you do it? I couldn't cope with Compliance, it was so rigid and (sorry) really really boring.

I'm a children's Social Worker. Exceptionally stressful, never ending caseloads and long hours, awful misconceptions from the general public (comments on here have reduced me to tears) BUT I have a wonderful manager, the best team, and I actually love my job and the children I work with.

A family member of mine is a children’s social worker too. They work incredibly hard, ridiculous hours, overworked, understaffed, cutbacks, lots of red tape which makes the job harder than it already is. Lots of horrible misconceptions from the public & being unjustly blamed for most things BUT my family member loves what they do & genuinely cares for the children they work with too.

Thank you for all your hard work💐

I'm a gardener.

It's not stressful, it's positively therapeutic!

However, I work for myself and don't get any sick pay/holiday pay, and I'm affected by the weather. So if DH didn't have a reliable income the financial side could be stressful.

im a vet and it’s so stressful. I genuinely feel like my life isn’t worth living at the moment so I’m doing my best to get out

Oh no 😢
It seems like it would be a fantastic job. Why is it so stressful?

Justkeepswimming2505 · 23/09/2024 12:28

I am a hospital Social Worker. It goes through periods where things calm down and therefore less stressful then other times the work keeps on coming despite everyone being at capacity - that is stressful.

I do love my job.

PussGirl · 23/09/2024 12:33

I'm a GP - it can be very stressful at times, and is a lot more stressful than it used to be. Even over 30 years' experience doesn't make up for that.

Retiring before the end of the year - whoop whoop!!

RonObvious · 23/09/2024 12:36

Depends what you mean by stress. I work as a researcher in academia, so lots of deadlines / lack of security / pressure etc. But I have a fantastic group leader and lab members at the moment, so it's a pretty nice place to be.

NetDesMamans1 · 23/09/2024 12:37

I work as a care assistant in a care home for the elderly. It's very stressful and it's badly paid.

I used to be a family law solicitor. I hated it beyond measure.

Now I am a temp for an agency. I do whatever looks interesting. Currently I am working on a 3 month charity project. Previously I have done exam invigilation, or reception work for a few weeks or Christmas cover in a shop. I love it. I pick and choose what I want to do and I don't have to care too much or take my work home emotionally.

The pay is shit though and I need to figure out how to sort my pension. But I am relatively stress free.

ETA because I said I did reception for a year - jus t a brain fart.

Edited

Which agency is that?

I'm a statistician within a research foundation. It can be busy at times, but generally not stressful. I really enjoy my role and am thankful to work here!

Do you mind me asking what your background/qualifications are? Just want to see if it is something I'm interested in. Assuming your role is internal and not dealing with clients etc

LolaLouise · 23/09/2024 13:15

A&E staff nurse. Yes.

LoobyDoop2 · 23/09/2024 13:17

Project Manager for a large household name company. Very stressful, because the directors I answer to are completely unrealistic in what they expect to be delivered, and just don’t hear bad news. So I’m caught between a leadership team who pile on constant pressure to achieve the unachievable, a project team who are utterly burnt out and demoralised because it’s been like this for years, and a bunch of stakeholders who know that absolutely nothing is going to happen or change, but are happy to hold me responsible because there’s no point saying anything to the bosses, and having a go at me at least ticks a Doing Something box.

YesItsMeYesItsMe · 23/09/2024 13:17

Freelance music teacher! (Not in a school) Love it and it creates happy hormones so even if it’s stressful I do leave every lesson on a high! It’s not v stressful though.

MartinsSpareCalculator · 23/09/2024 13:20

I'm an engineer. I don't really find my work stressful, but I'm not really a stressy person.

SpringleDingle · 23/09/2024 13:23

I run the European team for a consulting firm. I do a combination of hiring / firing & line management; project work ; business development. I work from home and generally work 9 - 5... except when my meetings are late to meet US folks and early to meet APAC folks. I also travel about once a month for meetings. I have fully flexible working - my boss doesn't care what hours I work as long as I get stuff done but I tend to still end up working 40hrs a week. A lot of my work is short-deadline and a pretty loose scope which can feel pressurising but I actually thrive on the pressure - I like being called at 9am and asked to turn something urgent out for a client by 3pm. I have chosen and hired most of my team and they are great. My boss is lovely and I worked for her in my past company also. My colleagues for other Regions are great and we meet virtually quite often for a good old moan!
What has been stressful recently is a lot of pressure to justify headcount, to increase utilisation and to make less used resources redundant. On paper these decisions make sense but in real life it's really tough to make people you like, who have families and homes etc.. redundant. I am trying very hard to balance the needs of the business with the lives of my team members and to make compassionate decisions but at the end of the day the $$ drives all.

So yes, it's a bit stressful but it pays well and large parts of the job I really like. Working from home is great (and have done so since 2008 when in a much more junior role).

Hellskitchen24 · 23/09/2024 13:30

I’m a staff nurse in one of the extremely acute specialties so look after the sickest patients in the hospital. There is always a level of stress as it comes with the territory but how stressful it is will vary from day to day. If you have a stable sickie as we call them, it’s generally not too bad. If you are have unstable sickie, you are going to have a tough day. Also totally depends on the staff around you. Good team generally equals a good shift. People off sick and agency staff, usually less of a dream shift.

00deed1988 · 23/09/2024 13:31

Midwife. Stressful due to staffing and politics.

However, although the job it's self has it's stressful moments of course when an emergency happens ect, I love it so much that I don't really feel it so much. I am trained on how to manage them and get help when needed. If I could just spend all my time providing the actual care my stress levels would be minimal.

Bonjovispjs · 23/09/2024 13:46

Nanny. Can be stressful depending on what the parents are like. Some are a nightmare, some are lovely.

I have a degree in management sciences, backed up with additional stats qualifications. I also have a Maths teaching qualification and MA in education (relevant to the research carried out).

I taught for a number of years before leaving and working in some statistical/analytical roles.

We carry out a range of internal and externally funded research, but I have limited interaction with clients.

Hope that helps.

BurbageBrook · 23/09/2024 14:38

I'm an academic. It is not too stressful. Flexible hours are a bonus. It's stressful finding a permanent job though (I am lucky to have one) and it's stressful for colleagues in some unis at risk of redundancy.

Didimum · 23/09/2024 15:04

I'm director level in a media company, and no, I don't find it stressful. DH is director level in finance and also doesn't find his job stressful. Very very busy, yes, but we don't feel work-related stress that impacts us.

What are some 'nightmare' examples when it comes to the parents?

greencheetah · 23/09/2024 15:08

I’m a legal advisor for a “not for profit” organisation.

It is absolutely heavenly. Lovely colleagues and easy workload. Mostly wfh. Pay is above average but not six figures.

feelingalittlehorse · 23/09/2024 15:09

Vet.

Fuck me, yes. 🫠🤦‍♀️
