I am stressed to high heaven with mine. I think it might be time for a change. What is your role and how stressful is it?

I recently retrained in aircraft maintenance. Currently helping build a prototype seaplane. I guess its stressful in the sense that if you fuck up even in a tiny way, you can cause the plane to crash and possibly kill people. But apart from that its not stressful, I bloody love it. Its often quite meditative - sometimes I'll be sanding something for ages, or painting a part, and its quite relaxing.

Left my low paid, high pressure technical job in landscaping and now design gardens and build 3d virtual models for other companies. Rarely interact with clients which is a bonus. It can get mildly stressful during peak periods when multiple clients are throwing work at me (February for some reason) but it's very satisfying and working from home is great. I've been in the industry so long now that I can chuck out most of the work without any drama. My client deal with the public facing bit so I can be my awkward self without bringing anyone into disrepute.

I come across as highly competent because I have started a business in a very niche area that I'm amazing at and noone asks me to do the stuff Im crap at. Being tidy, taking notes, small talk, talking to clients, fucking spreadsheets!!!

I'm a production chemist for a medtech company. Can be very busy and stressful when things go wrong, and it's a lot of responsibility. I absolutely love it, though!

IDontLikePinaColadas · 23/09/2024 19:35

I work in luxury events for UHNWI - it can be amazing and has taken me all over the world, but I always say that I’m putting on a theatrical production with no dress rehearsal. You cannot fuck up in any way with my clients.

I’m hardly saving lives doing what I do, but it is incredibly stressful in its own way.

JennyForeigner · 23/09/2024 19:38

Safeguarding/SEN law in a particular context. Very stressful. Feels like every day is a litany of service failure.

I work in philanthropy. It's the least stressful job I've ever had. Previously I was a manager in a charity and it was horribly stressful mainly due to staffing issues, upward bullying, plus constant fundraising to try and keep everyone's jobs.

I'm leaving an SLT role at a not for profit ron Friday and hoping to move into philanthropy. The culture is good but the pace is relentless and we've been building the org while running it for years. Plus the never ending scrabble for grants and new partnerships to keep jobs. I need a long lie down.

I'm a GP - it can be very stressful at times, and is a lot more stressful than it used to be. Even over 30 years' experience doesn't make up for that.

Retiring before the end of the year - whoop whoop!!

Gp as well. The stress is horrendous. I can’t do it any more, switching to working in a hospice which can obviously be very emotionally intense at times but is so much better because I have enough time for my patients and I can do my best for them without constantly struggling against lack of time and resources.

Littleoldme12 · 23/09/2024 19:43

Head of HR for a large charity.. yes.

Ribenaberry12 · 23/09/2024 19:43

Pastoral support in a secondary school. It’s mental.

WhamBamThankU · 23/09/2024 19:44

I work in a distillery, only stress is when there's a tight deadline on a product. Absolutely love my job and my boss.

mugglewump · 23/09/2024 19:44

I teach.

redastherose · 23/09/2024 19:50

Head of a Conveyancing Department. Very stressful and getting worse every year. Clients are more demanding and less grateful. I'm the top of my field and wonder why I bother.

veryexpensivetaste · 23/09/2024 19:53

I'm a sales assistant in a jewellery shop. Not stressful as we're usually very quiet. Sometimes if the shop gets busy then it can feel a bit overwhelming with lots of things going on at once, rushing back and forth to the safe to get jewellery out for customers, having to make sure no one is up to no good. We experienced a theft recently and lost £10,000 worth of goods. I wasn't involved but that was stressful for my colleagues and now we're all on alert!

mugglewump · 23/09/2024 19:44

I teach.

No need to expand on the stress levels? 😂

I work in a university, non research or teaching role. Pay for the work/life balance is brilliant, not stressed at all. Pay generally isn't fantastic but probably in line with CS. Left my research job (senior, v stressful!) for this and have NOT looked back!

I'd love to know what role you do. Our admin team are poorly paid and stressed. Library staff seem the happiest perhaps.

I'm a senior lecturer. Highly stressful Althea with the occasional lull ( though I have healing issues which doesn't help).

YorkshireLandlady · 23/09/2024 20:04

Pub Landlady!
Stressful all day every day,
30+ staff, operational from 7am - midnight 7 days a week, busy kitchen & 10 letting rooms in a very touristy area.
Constant drama & crisis management.
Done it for over 30 years, 8 pubs later, loved it for most of that time but now wondering when it's time to go.
Spent most of the last year sorting money/pensions etc to be able to make the decision soon.

Nezuko22 · 23/09/2024 20:05

I did have a unicorn job but a new manager who lives inside his own ass had made it awful and I’m interviewing for other things atm. Sad though as I did really love my job (sales).

GameOfJones · 23/09/2024 20:07

I'm a Senior HR Advisor. Overall, I really like my job. I am lucky to have a fantastic manager and be part of a good team where we are very supportive of one another. It definitely has stressful times, depending on how much casework I'm dealing with. People issues take up a lot of time and can often be unpredictable. It means everything else on the to do list needs to wait but the to do list never gets smaller.

If I worked for a rubbish company or had a bad manager it would be awful. I've had that in the past and it can be toxic. The people and team can really make all the difference.

Tonkerbea · 23/09/2024 20:07

My job stresses me out, but I think I'm the problem! I'm quite a stressy, people pleasing, perfectionist. On paper it should be a lovely job, but it's so busy, I'm doing lots of things a bit below par to get by

Suzuki70 · 23/09/2024 20:14

IFA Administrator (Independent Financial Adviser). No, it is not stressful, I love it - buuuut it's paid accordingly.

I am a qualified as a Mortgage Adviser but I'm not sure I fancy the stress of my own clients.

DoubleShotEspresso · 23/09/2024 20:15

I work in special needs education-I cannot properly describe just hie stressful, soul destroying and infuriating at times it can be, but the fact is I get so much satisfaction from the good days, I eiukd genuinely do it for free.

cocoromo · 23/09/2024 20:17

I’m a post 16 SEND teacher and part of the SLT also the safeguarding officer and in charge of pastoral support. It’s very stressful.

Waitingfordoggo · 23/09/2024 20:18

I am a Fitness Instructor and it couldn’t be less stressful if it tried- it’s a joyous job.

Hard to make a living doing it though- most people combine it with another job. I don’t need to do that so I just work very PT and am grateful for that.

Bluemonkey2029 · 23/09/2024 20:23

I run a children's science club franchise. It's not stressful at all and I love being my own boss but do have other franchisees for support. Plus I earn more for less hours than I did teaching.

YourTwinklyDeer · 23/09/2024 20:27

Manager in a homeless charity, hardest, most stressful job I’ve ever had. The level of responsibility makes me want to cry, more and more regulation …………. Not sure how to get out right not but I know have to. My MH is shot.
