Not my parcel so why my problem?

Knock on my door 2 days ago and a man with a large parcel told me he was a resident of a nearby street. He said the parcel had been delivered to him in error.

As I wasn't expecting anything I checked the address and it was for a neighbour 2 doors away. I told the man it wasn't mine and he said he had tried numerous times to deliver it to neighbour and he was never in. He'd put a note through the door and no one had called him and he could no longer store the large parcel.

When I asked why he was knocking on my door he said I lived nearer so I should take it. Like a fool, I did. I think I was so gob smacked I didn't react sensibly.

I have also tried to deliver it and put a note through his letterbox - I do know neighbour by sight and he has been at home as car has come and gone.

I'm also fed up of large parcel in my hallway so I'm thinking of passing it onto another neighbour. What do you think? 😀

Put some party music on, remove the outer layer, then pass it to your neighbour.

She needs to ensure she puts a chew-it in each layer of wrapping though if she’s doing it properly.

Moveoverdarlin · 22/09/2024 20:17

I can’t understand that if you’ve seen him coming and going why don’t you go round when he’s in and say ‘Got your parcel, can you come and get it now? It’s massive’.

Just go round!!

Dibbydoos · 22/09/2024 20:17

Tell the neighbour to come get it or you will need to RTS as its in the way. Be done with this AH neighbour.

My neighbour used to do the same and we'd have to take them round until one of our dogs tore up their sex toys parcel. They now come round straight away!!!

TwinklyNight · 22/09/2024 20:36

Could you get a rug or tarp type of thing, get it under the box and drag it to his door. That is how I move heavy furniture.

TheArtOfTreeHugging · 22/09/2024 20:51

I once had this with the next door neighbour and a whole fucking mattress!

Took it in. Courier guy puts a delivery note through their door saying he left it with us. And then nothing for 2 days, despite us seeing their car, lights on, voices etc.

Started going round ringing their doorbell and dragging this bastard mattress about, when we saw they were in, only to keep being ignored (again lights on, car outside, voices heard inside, doorbell definitely ringing).

After 4 days I got really pissed off with the sheer rudeness of expecting to use our home as a storage unit, so I dragged it back round for the umpteenth time and just leant the bugger against their front door. When the husband opened the door to go to work in the morning he will have been flattened by their own bloody mattress.

pollymere · 22/09/2024 21:53

Put a note through the door saying you have an item addressed to them given to you by someone else. Explain that unless they claim it within x days you will have no choice other than assuming they don't want it and you will be disposing of accordingly.

stealing

No it isn't, it's been abandoned.

MrsPeterHarris · 22/09/2024 22:13

You've tried, to no avail!

Open it & sell it on your local social media selling site.

BoreOffAboutYerChickensEmma · 22/09/2024 22:22

Definitely wrap it up in wrapping paper, several layers, chewit in each layer then pass it to the neighbour to your right, shouting, “tag! You’re it, and no returns!”.

Normallynumb · 22/09/2024 22:50

Put a note under his wipers

Thevelvelletes · 22/09/2024 23:08

Put it through his windscreen.😁

It hasn’t been abandoned. It was delivered to the wrong person accidently.. If the item is nicked/OP keeps it, said person who ordered the item will contact the sender who will get the delivery company to find out where the item went to. Person will say they dropped it off at OP’s.

Regardless, I can’t believe the audacity of people like you who think they have the right to keep something like this that doesn’t belong to them to sell, rather than just send it back not known at this address OR stick it outside the correct neighbours door. Not to mention, it’s likely the neighbour will likely see the EXACT SINK they ordered sold by a fellow neighbour on FB and put two and two together. Jesus Christ do you have no morals 🙄

MillieMinx · 22/09/2024 23:25

Just put it outside his door and take a photo of it as proof you left it there. Walk away and forget about it

Carvoeiro123 · 23/09/2024 01:08

Bloody hell…believe it or not us folk in NI will now take in parcels for our neighbours(not to rob etc) some neighbours you lot are!!!
Just do a watch out if possible or pop it back to Royal Mail…do your friendly considerate duty!!!

This happened to me once years ago. NDN didn’t like me for one reason or another, never really got to the bottom of it. Postie asked if I’d take a parcel in for him one day and I thought I’d be neighbourly despite him being a dick, maybe it would make him like me. He kept ignoring the door when I tried to take it around. He was very clearly in because I could hear him but he was intentionally ignoring me. I just gave it back to the postie and explained…

In your case I’d just leave it on the chuffing doorstep, most couriers do this anyway.

If it's not too much trouble, leave it outside his front door. Alternatively, you could leave it outside your house on the main street—either way, it's not your responsibility. Personally, I prefer the second option.

She's tried to give it to them and they obviously don't want it. It's been abandoned.

ThatsNotMyTeen · 23/09/2024 11:51

Leave it on your drive
put a note through his door that unless it’s uplifted within 48 hours you’ll be disposing of it
he’s a CF

Projectme · 23/09/2024 11:59

Leave a note through his letterbox saying 'as you are already aware, I have a parcel for you that you've failed to collect...if you don't come and get it when we are both next at home, I'll be dragging it out onto the pavement outside your house and phoning the council to report fly-tipping'.
😂

Joke. Obviously. But it would be funny to watch it all unfold!

FeetLikeFlippers · 23/09/2024 13:55

Oh god that’s exactly the kind of stupid thing I would have done if caught off-guard like that! I’d put another note through his door telling him it’s now on your doorstep because it was blocking the hallway. I’m pretty sure if he thinks there’s a chance of it being stolen he’ll be round like a shot.

Lovefromjuliaxo · 23/09/2024 14:33

TeaAndCakeFTW · 23/09/2024 11:37

She's tried to give it to them and they obviously don't want it. It's been abandoned.

Then leave it outside their door or contact sender, it’s not hers to bloody keep. Can’t believe folk are suggesting selling it on (local) fb groups. Is it just me who would either leave it outside the door or contact the delivery company? It’s not that much hard work. I’ve received parcels meant for other people that they haven’t come to collect, and I’ve always contacted original sender (printed on the box) before assuming I can keep it. Likely original sender will arrange a collection. Especially something pricey like a sink. Taking it to sell is stealing possibly £££ of pounds worth of item, especially if it’s bespoke.

when you say “obviously”, they haven’t answered the door. Yes, they could just have forgotten (seems unlikely if it’s something large and pricey), or there could be an emergency such as a loved one being in hospital or they’ve taken unwell.

If it’s a neighbourly duty to take in the parcel, it’s also the neighbourly duty to pick up that parcel from the person who kindly took it in, not leave it to take up space in their hallway for days/weeks because you can’t be bothered to go and get it even though you know it’s waiting at your neighbour’s house.

For those saying take it or drag it round to neighbours- the thing is damn heavy and awkward. I don't t have time to ring company again or go to PO. I assumed he would come collect it so that's why I didn't rush over there when I saw his car and other times I've missed his car arriving and only seen it when it's left his driveway.
I work and have young children to get to school. I do enough bloody life admin of my own so I don't want to do the sodding neighbours. It's not for me to sort out (although it's me inconvenienced).

I moved it out onto my front path last night but then the rain hit and I felt guilty so dragged it back in again. So have parcel back in hallway but now a sopping wet, soggy cardboard one 😩

I'm going to sit by my window this evening and pounce as soon as he gets home.
