Not my parcel so why my problem?

Knock on my door 2 days ago and a man with a large parcel told me he was a resident of a nearby street. He said the parcel had been delivered to him in error.

As I wasn't expecting anything I checked the address and it was for a neighbour 2 doors away. I told the man it wasn't mine and he said he had tried numerous times to deliver it to neighbour and he was never in. He'd put a note through the door and no one had called him and he could no longer store the large parcel.

When I asked why he was knocking on my door he said I lived nearer so I should take it. Like a fool, I did. I think I was so gob smacked I didn't react sensibly.

I have also tried to deliver it and put a note through his letterbox - I do know neighbour by sight and he has been at home as car has come and gone.

I'm also fed up of large parcel in my hallway so I'm thinking of passing it onto another neighbour. What do you think? 😀

@BoreOffAboutYerChickensEmma I think it's obviously a kitchen sink but I do like your line of thought 🤣🤣

That is what “they” want you think! 😁

I'd open it and sell it on fb.

stealing

RichinVitaminR · 22/09/2024 17:34

Maybe write a note explaining what has happened and say that you are also unable to store it and that if it isn’t collected by (I dunno, Tuesday?) then you will have no alternative but to leave it on the doorstep. 🤷🏼‍♀️

BlueFlowers5 · 22/09/2024 17:46

Take a photo when you put it by his car, then email delivery company CEO saying what you've done and include photos of the parcels label and one outside his house.

Come on its a few doors down, you will catch him in or he will pop round. I'm often taking things in for my neighbours and think nothing of it.They do the same. It's nice to be nice.

MixedCouple2 · 22/09/2024 17:57

On doorstep or car.
Knock before leaving it.
Simplizzzzzzz

OhcantthInkofaname · 22/09/2024 18:00

Put it on his car!

CleaningAngel · 22/09/2024 18:07

W0tnow · 21/09/2024 15:59

Leave it on his doorstep!

Exactly what I thought, I'd of told the other guy who had it to do the same, why should you have to have it!!

FunkyMonks · 22/09/2024 18:08

Op we had something similar we just come back from holiday this weekend a parcel was up against our front door it wasn't for us it was for another house few doors down husband goes to deliver it and say this was dropped at ours and the person was rather rude well clearly it's number 12 not 10 I wish we had just thrown it in the bin rather than be nice.

WandaFishy99 · 22/09/2024 18:19

I don't understand why people don't collect their parcels when they know they're in a neighbour's house.
A snooty madam next door but one has twice ignored the postie's note and waited for me to take the parcel round. Barely a thank you when I did, so now I won't answer the door if I notice someone knocking at hers first.

Grammarnut · 22/09/2024 18:42

Leave it outside his door. Job done.

You've taken responsibility, so if you leave it outside you are responsible, you sell it, it's theft. Also please be aware it can be a scam but as you know your neighbour then it probably isn't. Just if someone who isn't your neighbour comes to pick it up, then refuse them. Give your neighbour another 24hrs then write them a second note that you pin to their door. Take a photo of it.

It's one thing having a parcel of clothes in your house for a day or 2 - but it's a whole other story having a large, heavy sink(?) in the way for days on end.

If neighbour isn't keeping their part of the bargain and collecting in a timely manner, it is NOT OP's problem.

peesinapod · 22/09/2024 18:58

@jen337 😂 yes, exactly this!

Greenshed · 22/09/2024 18:59

So what have you decided in the end OP?

Rosscameasdoody · 22/09/2024 19:07

Olika · 21/09/2024 16:20

I would hate having it on my hallway so when I see the neighbour's car home I would just leave it outside his door and ring his bell. If he then doesn't take it in (and gets stolen or wet) that's on him. I am not a post office.

Yep, this. Either that or open the parcel to see where it came from and then contact the sender saying that it hasn’t reached the recipient and you want them to come and collect it. Isn’t there some rule that if it’s not collected within a certain time you can keep or dispose of it ?

SodaFountainMountain · 22/09/2024 19:09

Put another note through stating that if it is not collected by end of tomorrow you will be charging £100 per day emergency storage.

Fiestafiesta · 22/09/2024 19:10

I live next door to young people who never answer the bloody door! I can hear them in but they won’t answer their parcel deliveries. So now I accept for other neighbours (and they do for me) but not for next door. I’m sure the couriers think I’m a right cow ‘oh who for? No12? No, sorry’

Fescue · 22/09/2024 19:14

Put some party music on, remove the outer layer, then pass it to your neighbour.

ladyvimes · 22/09/2024 19:16

Just stick a note through his door saying you have it and will hold it for 2 days after that you will charge £20 a day storage fee. Keep a copy of the note..

llamali · 21/09/2024 16:00

Why on earth did you accept it? I don't understand why you'd do that? Does the neighbour have a hedge you could throw it into?

I am imagining the sex in the hedge couple of a previous historic post suddenly getting a bonk on the head. 😄

I once accepted a massive parcel like that, and by massive I mean it was huge. The courier was begging, it was for an address opposite and I caved in. I think when you get caught up in a moment sometimes you dont think rationally.

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/09/2024 19:54

I don't get why you wouldn't just take it round and leave it at their house /doorstep

betterangels · 22/09/2024 19:57

Grammarnut · 22/09/2024 18:42

Yeah. I wouldn't care if anyone was home. Not my problem.

Moveoverdarlin · 22/09/2024 20:14

So when you see his car there, go round, knock on door and say ‘Hi I have had your kitchen sink in my hall for 3 days, can you come back with me now and get it please? I can’t lift it. It’s quite big and been in my way for ages now, before me the block in church lane had it and he gave it to me! Weren’t you expecting it? Let’s grab it now as I have guests coming.
