Not my parcel so why my problem?

Knock on my door 2 days ago and a man with a large parcel told me he was a resident of a nearby street. He said the parcel had been delivered to him in error.

As I wasn't expecting anything I checked the address and it was for a neighbour 2 doors away. I told the man it wasn't mine and he said he had tried numerous times to deliver it to neighbour and he was never in. He'd put a note through the door and no one had called him and he could no longer store the large parcel.

When I asked why he was knocking on my door he said I lived nearer so I should take it. Like a fool, I did. I think I was so gob smacked I didn't react sensibly.

I have also tried to deliver it and put a note through his letterbox - I do know neighbour by sight and he has been at home as car has come and gone.

I'm also fed up of large parcel in my hallway so I'm thinking of passing it onto another neighbour. What do you think? 😀

I'd go round when the car is back and bang on the door until he answers, telling him to come and get it now as otherwise you will just be pushing it out the door to your garden as it's too big to stay and you had previously informed him it was there. And if it gets stolen, that's on him - not you- as you have no contract or responsibility with anyone.

Peachy2005 · 21/09/2024 18:45

Yes, there’s no reason for you to drag it to his place. Either call over when his car is there and make him come over to carry it back himself, or put it outside your house and leave a note to say it’s outside your house.

HanaLeigh · 21/09/2024 18:46

I don't understand why people take in parcels or try and track down misdelivered parcels through SM ( except for my close neighbours).

If we all contacted the courier to collect and re-deliver they would make sure they had delivered correctly in the first place.

Mnetcurious · 21/09/2024 18:49

Put a note through their door saying you can’t store it anymore so if it’s not collected from you by 9am Sunday morning (or whenever) then you will be leaving it on his doorstep, at his own risk.

Differentstarts · 21/09/2024 18:50

Have you actually knocked while his car is there

User990 · 21/09/2024 18:53

There is no paperwork relating that parcel to you, just dump it at their doorstep (or sell it on ebay 😜)

AllotmentTime · 21/09/2024 18:54

Lean it against his door so that when the door is open it falls in.

hopefully it'll get his toe.

I’d do this, except leaving it in my garden not his given the bulk of it.

Azertyuio123 · 21/09/2024 18:59

Open it. Keep it if it's something nice.

Cantthinkofonenow · 21/09/2024 19:05

Just leave it outside his door?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 21/09/2024 19:08

You should have done the 'Fast Show' ...

"I'm a bit..err, um ,I'll nick anything, me yeah, give it 'ere. Weeeh, cos I'm you know ,wahey, I'll nick anythink me."

That sort of thing.

Ollygolightly · 21/09/2024 19:10

I actually agree here, Leave it on his doorstep..you've exhausted all other options and he doesn't seem in a rush to get it so,dump and run😄👌🥰

Put the box behind his car, douse it in petrol, douse car in petrol, set parcel and car on fire. Hide behind a tree/fence. When neighbour comes out to see what’s going on shoot him with a sniper rifle. Call in a tactical air strike on his house. Nuke the house from orbit to make sure. That should stop him doing it again.

😆 I wasn’t aware that John Wick had a Mumsnet account.

BiscuitlyBoyle · 21/09/2024 19:16

I wonder if the neighbour is one of these MNers who doesn’t answer the door?
Leave it on the door step and don’t give it a second thought.

protectthesmallones · 21/09/2024 19:21

Just leave it outside the front door of the address it was intended for annexing the bell.

If it gets damaged during transit they can take it up with the sender. Bit of an imposition anyway if it's that big and heavy.

TwinklyKhakiPoster · 21/09/2024 19:21

Open it. It might be useful to you

MyCatHatesSandals · 21/09/2024 19:27

This problem has arisen only because both you and the man who brought you the parcel are struggling with your own boundaries. You don't take the parcel to your neighbour; you put a note through their door saying you'll hold it for x number of days, and then you'll return it or dispose of it. It's really simple. The complexity has arisen because of your misplaced sense of obligation.

TitsInAbsentia · 21/09/2024 19:27

I bet they aren't fussed as they've already been refunded as the 'delivery' probably provided a photo which wasn't their address. Stick it in your garden and send them a note saying collect within 2 days or you'll put it out front with a note saying 'free'!

Sorry OP, haven't read the thread but when we received a parcel (15 inches square) not for us we contacted the company on the parcel and told them to collect it.

Not only did they not collect it, we received another identical parcel a few weeks later! We contacted company (a coffee company) again and explained that these parcels were to be collected as they were not for us. Eventually, they were collected, but this whole debacle took months! In the meantime, our elderly cat took a shine to the boxes sitting by the front door and spent a lot of time sleeping on them Grin. It was all quite bizarre because the value of the coffee beans was considerable (we googled).

Like I say it was some kind of wipes, I think they were a few pounds a pack but only really useful if you need lots, I think from googling I found them on a wholesale site for carers so probably what you use for bed baths or something? But pretty much useless to me - think thousands of cheap J-cloths every few months

MrsSunshine2b · 21/09/2024 19:41

Is the neighbour OK? I'd call the police to do a welfare check, maybe he's died and that's why no-one is answering the door.

EPankhurst · 21/09/2024 19:42

How long have you had it now?

MrsSkylerWhite · 21/09/2024 19:42

Put it on his doorstep.

RightSedFred · 21/09/2024 19:44

No good deed goes unpunished.

RealHousewivesOfTaunton · 21/09/2024 19:47

Chuck it out in your front garden with a big sign saying "For number x". It's been hailing here today, I'm sure number X will hurry round to get it.
