Not my parcel so why my problem?

Knock on my door 2 days ago and a man with a large parcel told me he was a resident of a nearby street. He said the parcel had been delivered to him in error.

As I wasn't expecting anything I checked the address and it was for a neighbour 2 doors away. I told the man it wasn't mine and he said he had tried numerous times to deliver it to neighbour and he was never in. He'd put a note through the door and no one had called him and he could no longer store the large parcel.

When I asked why he was knocking on my door he said I lived nearer so I should take it. Like a fool, I did. I think I was so gob smacked I didn't react sensibly.

I have also tried to deliver it and put a note through his letterbox - I do know neighbour by sight and he has been at home as car has come and gone.

I'm also fed up of large parcel in my hallway so I'm thinking of passing it onto another neighbour. What do you think? 😀

you would think whoever ordered said parcel would be missing it by now.. i agree as above, pop it on his doorstep and leave it.. if it gets wet or nicked then so be it.

my DH is a pain in the arse for taking in parcels (ex postie and can't help himself) does my nut in cos all the regular drivers now know if they can't deliver, old victor meldrew at 53 is happy to take them in!

Grin Grin

Beautiful3 · 21/09/2024 17:18

You're not legally responsible for it, because you didn't sign for it. I'd go now and leave it on his door step.

Why would she leave it outside her door and not his 😂 and rain depends on where she lives.

She said it was a large parcel. He can’t be arsed to get it, why should she traipse over with it?

do you know what's in it OP?

At last, someone with a proper perspective on the issue. Asking the most important question, and we need to know the answer, I am pretty sure that somewhere in its travels some of the wrapping has been damaged and is peeling back.

EarthSight · 21/09/2024 17:46

You were taken by surprise. Next time, if there is one, it's ok for you to say no to this.

Given how many times he'd tried to deliver it, it's really not ok for that man to feel entitled to make his problem, your problem. Also not ok for you now to do the same thing to another neighbour.

The parcel is not your responsibility. You've already done enough and been neighbourly, so leave it at his back door, or his front door if you have to.

Portfun24 · 21/09/2024 17:48

Na why should you have to lug it round, I'd put a letter through today to come collect it by tomoro afternoon or you will arrange to return to the sender on the sticker on it (even if theres no details of sender) as it cant stay in your hall indefinitely.

Gimmeabreak2025 · 21/09/2024 17:49

Open it and see who it’s from then contact them to collect it and say it was delivered to you in error.

BlackShuck3 · 21/09/2024 17:49

open it
keep it/sell it/give it away
deny all knowledge

Pandasnacks · 21/09/2024 17:53

Sod leaving it on his doorstep. Leave it on yours and let him come get it

Cerealkiller4U · 21/09/2024 18:01

It’s for the company who sent it to sort it. Because it’s their contract with your neighbour. Send it back or bin it

MillicentMama · 21/09/2024 18:03

Leave it on his doorstep. He’s seen your note and ignored it.

I once took in a neighbour’s parcel. Bloody big Dyson. They left it there for 8 days and were stroppy when they came over that I hadn’t tried to deliver it to them!!! I actually said “so you’d like me to heft your box a week after a C-section and leave my toddler and newborn at home whilst I play courier??”. Asshole, never took in another parcel for them 😂

PadstowGirl · 21/09/2024 18:22

Im prone to drama so I'd be worrying it contained drugs, bomb making supplies or another 2000 exploding pagers. And it's being stored in your hall way.

GingerPirate · 21/09/2024 18:25

I wouldn't take it in if not mine, not my parcel not my problem!

NoTouch · 21/09/2024 18:28

A neighbour fell out with me due to a parcel issue.

Came home one day after an evening away and NDN knocked on my door to say they had my large parcel in their hallway and could I move it as they had already had it over night and had to squeeze past it for two days. I wasn't expecting anything so went to their house to see it and it was a huge cross trainer in a box. Checked the address label and it was for someone across town!

They thought I should have taken it into my house as they had thought they had taken it in for me. I politely declined as nothing to do with me and they never forgave me for it!

They were stuck squeezing past it for a week as the people who ordered it didn't have the means to transport it to their address and the company who sent it/the courier took ages to sort it about between themselves.

3-4 days into it NDN came to me again insisting it was "my turn" to have it in my house until it was sorted. I sympathised with them but again politely declined. They never spoke to us again. Thankfully they moved a couple of years later as it was really awkward and petty how long they held a grudge for!

BobbyBiscuits · 21/09/2024 18:31

I've had to stop taking in parcels for my neighbours.

It was getting a bit mad. One set of NDN who are both in their 20s, able bodied and at least one of them WFH. But they were seemingly just too lazy to come down the stairs? Or booking parcels for days they know they wouldn't be in. They'd used my address as their safe place. Why??
I could not cope with three flights of stairs six times to deal with someone else's crap!

Then the urgency of their desperation to collect the parcel days later as if you're deliberately hoarding their property!?

I guess you could check on your drive home if their lights were on, then just drag to doorstep and ring the bell. If no answer ring it again then just leave. You did your best. And it's totally not your problem.

Next time politely refuse it.

Of course I'm an idiot, I accept that. But I was taken aback by the request and didn't want to be unpleasant so just said yes. As soon as I shut the door I knew I was a fool.

The parcel is large and heavy, it's from a kitchen company and about the size of a double sink (not confirming it's a ceramic sink though)! If I lifted it and tried to carry it I'm worried I might damage it as it's heavy. But of course that's not my problem although id feel guilty about it.

For those saying RTS I did try calling kitchen company but I have no order number etc so ended up on the phone for 40mins and got nowhere and I really can't be bothered to try again.

I suppose I'll need to drag it round there, although taking it next door seemed a better idea 🤣

They sound nuts. Why did they not just put it outside?!

thedefinitionofmadness · 21/09/2024 18:37

I don't know why the person who dumped it on you didn't just leave it on neighbours drive - if its that heavy no-one will nick it

Drizzlethru · 21/09/2024 18:39

Put a note through the door saying it needs to be collected on a set date and time slot.

if not they you will dispose of it?

HermioneWeasley · 21/09/2024 18:39

@parcelwoes if it’s that heavy I would leave it outside your house and tell him it’s there if he wants it
