To find these loafers for men so so awful

Light hearted thread with a hint of real displeasure.

DH loves his black loafers with tassels. Wears them at the office everyday. I was secretly hoping I'd never see them again as they are on their last legs but today he bought a replacement pair on his way home.

I'm going to have to see them for another decade. I hate the tassels. I wouldn't mind plain black boring loafers.

AIBU to be planning ways to disappear them or plotting their untimely demise?

I really like this style of shoe!!

I like those ones too! In fact DH wears them... but the tassels oh god no!

NunyaBeeswax · 20/09/2024 17:39

Slip on tasseled loafers remind me of every maths teacher I ever had.
Smooth bottom for sliding about the class rooms and getting a bit closer to the girls than the did with the boys..

Hmm... Seems your OH shoes have awoken a long distant traumatic memory.. so, I say, kill them with fire.. mistake then for a spider.. lighter fluid and a match.

🤪

Now classic brogues, they're a nice shoe.

My.last Ex worked in an office and for some reason he'd buy the pointiest shoes I'd ever seen. If I held him by his neck, I could have broken rocks I reckon.

I am guessing there are some deck shoes in the wardrobe too

Oh god I was laughing my head off at the betassled loafers, and then you bring in these!!

All the wannabe posh dudes had these in our yoof. Possibly including my DH 😂 now we are strictly sensible ecco !

Mind you, I spotted a fellow in the shop wearing deck shoes a few weeks ago. I think I accidently stared and came over as «interested». 🫣 I was just agog at the shoes.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 20/09/2024 10:43

Could be worse. He could be wearing loafers with snaffles.

Edited

I googled that! 🤣🤣
To add, I’m happy that people wear what they like. I’m also happy to snigger uncontrollably at other people’s fashion choices, as I’m sure many do at mine 😄

I know someone who still wears deck shoes, along with faded tattered rugby shirt and curtains. It’s like the 90s never left.

I suppose at least OP’s husband moved on, albeit skipping a few decades along the way.

😂😂

Yep!!

OP, my sincerest commiserations. I dress like a bin bag, but those shoes + the jumbo cords on a guy still in his forties are definitely challenging.

Superworm24 · 20/09/2024 18:04

DH has some, I actually love them and think he looks great. What footwear is suitable for a middle aged man to wear?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 20/09/2024 18:06

SquirrelSoShiny · 20/09/2024 17:32

I mean it’s the Oxfords I like, not the loafers. Oxfords are absolutely classic.

I prefer brogues for women than for men as it goes.

AlwaysKindaKnewYoudBeTheDeathOfMe · 20/09/2024 18:06

I like boots on a guy - docs, Chelsea boots. Trainers are better than shoes! I didn't really know anyone still wore a proper shoe tbh.

I'm weirdly both with and against him here. I can't stand those type of loafers, but I am also a lover of classic shoe styles, of which this loafer is a variety of. My wife hates my love of classic Oxfords, but all I can see it the most beautiful and symmetrical shoe. She calls them old man shoes, but I can't think of a better shoe for a suit.

DH has TWO pairs of black Oxfords. He opts for the tasseled mess because they're a) more comfortable and b) the office uniform thing (I think)

My friends and I swore off any man who wore shoes (at uni, end of the '90s). Only trainers allowed.

Your DH's choice of footwear is icktastic, OP. I would have run for the hills at the first sighting of a tassel.

PickAChew · 20/09/2024 18:09

I had some like that. In the 80s! They were every bit as hard and uncomfortable as those look.

BoldAmberDuck · 20/09/2024 18:09

They’re hideous but I guess if he only wears them to work it’s ok

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 20/09/2024 18:15

It must be a law firm thing for men to be no good at fashion.

The senior law firm partner at one office would wear rugby shirts, me and the other PA backed out of the room laughing - this was on mufti days though. Another lawyer also male wore an outfit so bad on mufti days that we were all rolling about the office sniggering and told him it was bad.

These were men who weren’t bad looking and reasonably tall and slim so no excuses.

starfishmummy · 20/09/2024 18:44

Please tell me he doesn't wear white socks with them

SensibleSigma · 20/09/2024 19:05

@GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing that was the closest photo. Sadly DHs are creamish smooth leather and look very, erm, suited to a much older gentleman. They are genuinely awful.

Onlyonekenobe · 20/09/2024 19:42

The shirt underneath a rugby shirt proves it: this is a classic case of arrested sartorial development dating back to c.1994.

I don't think there's a cure for this. I'm so sorry for you.

SweatySpaghetti · 20/09/2024 19:43

I quite like them 🤷‍♀️

greengreyblue · 20/09/2024 19:43

I think they’re stylish on the right man with the right outfit.

HeliotropePJs · 20/09/2024 19:45

I think it depends on the person in them. They're not my favourite type of shoe, but some people could pull off the look. An attractive, confident man with a sense of humour and a friendly personality will look good in just about anything, imo.

Aroastdinnerisnotahumanright · 20/09/2024 20:46

This thread reminds me of a 50-60 year old guy I saw the other day on a Brompton bike wearing Chelsea boots, sweaty betty-style leggings and a shirt and tie. I know it was on his commute but still.

Gensola · 20/09/2024 20:47

I like them but I’m an academic so my judgement is probably skewed by seeing hundreds of these a day at work 😅

RobertaFirmino · 20/09/2024 21:12

RandomUsernameHere · 20/09/2024 17:28

Those ones are awful but tasseled loafers in general can look really good.

How? On a bonfire?

BeatsAntique · 20/09/2024 21:12

Absolutely not. I couldn’t find a man who wore those attractive, and then you added quarter zips to the list of his fashion violations! Quarter zips give me Jeremy Clarkson/Dad vibes and it’s grim.

With a suit, it must be Oxfords. But I’m judgy AF about men’s style choices when it comes to finding them attractive.

The only acceptable footwear: Chelsea, non-pointy western, or lace up boots, riggers, Oxfords, Converse, suede flat style Puma/Adidas, Jordans. Flip flops or sandals or slides ONLY on or close to a beach or pool and never with socks. Wellies when needed.

Pasty shoes, long pointy loafers, shiny shoes unless with a DJ or military dress uniform, Timberlands, white 1990s style Paul McCartney trainers or any athletic shoe in a neon colour - all in the bin. Crocs should never be worn by anyone, unless they're actively wading across a river.

I was watching an episode of Frasier from 1994 the other day and they were making fun of his shoes with tassles. 😅

I watched that recently too. The one where Niles has very expensive tasseled shoes and he’s not sure about them.
