To find these loafers for men so so awful

Light hearted thread with a hint of real displeasure.

DH loves his black loafers with tassels. Wears them at the office everyday. I was secretly hoping I'd never see them again as they are on their last legs but today he bought a replacement pair on his way home.

I'm going to have to see them for another decade. I hate the tassels. I wouldn't mind plain black boring loafers.

AIBU to be planning ways to disappear them or plotting their untimely demise?

Jumbo cords? i'm amazed you have a toddler, his dress sense alone is enough to put you off.

On the plus side you could easily find jumbo cords for the toddler to match with daddy

Ohhh gosh I can so relate to this. Sometimes I am so gob smacked by the combination of clothes he puts together. Beggars belief. I think surely with these combination of clothes that it can't go that wrong... Lately he's been wearing formal shirts UNDER rugby shirts, a couple of buttons of of the rugby shirt will be open so you can see a shirt underneath. Or the hideous shoes with navy chinos and brown socks. It hurts so much.

Please say you're not married to Steve Bannon? Please?

Or, is it more like

Yeah. It's not good at all. It kind of looks a bit 80s, but like the tassels would be on a women's shoe from BHS or something?

polydactylfeline · 20/09/2024 16:40

They look like the shoes of someone who has fathered children up and down the country 🤣😆

Aroastdinnerisnotahumanright · 20/09/2024 11:48

I was expecting much worse, like the ones in worn out leather with square upturned toes.

I think you're referring to what I call 'Cornish pasty' shoes 😂😂

Thevelvelletes · 20/09/2024 16:45

Red socks and sta prest circa 79 or mid 70s skin/smoothie wear.

SensibleSigma · 20/09/2024 16:47

@Lollingalong and @fao we have similar menfolk.

I’ve tried to talk to mine about only buying in a limited range of colour, or having sets of clothes that he wears together.

But no. He seems to raid the bowels of hohos wardrobe for the shabbiest, most shapeless or tight clothes he can find, in an array of colours.

Anything decent is kept firmly in its packet until it’s at least a few decades out of style.

Nesbi · 20/09/2024 16:52

Americans seem to love loafers, but I tend to think the only people who seem to get away with them are Italian.

Your DH needs to stop being influenced by his US colleagues and get back to some proper Brit footwear. Oxfords if he is trying to look smart, Derby’s if he is dressing it down a bit. He can go with brown Derby brogues at the weekend if he wants to to keep it old school. Stick to places like Cheaney, Trickers, Grenson or if you want to go a bit cheaper Loake. Every time he looks at his loafers you must rap him sharply across the knuckles with it. Eventually he will learn. ;-)

I actively judge men with tassels. I know they’re meant to be old school but they’re ugly. On the other hand, you’d have to pry my Gucci horsebit loafers from my cold, dead hands!

Bangwam1 · 20/09/2024 16:59

The tassels are special. You can’t allow him to partake in this kind of masochism.

These shoes would be having an accident, most definitely.

I feel like he gets some points for effort though?! Even if the result is an eyesore, I get the sense that there is some sort of mood board or theme underpinning these strong looks? Mine just looks like he escaped from a tumble dryer, and would think nothing of popping on his work shoes with some gym kit and trying (and obviously failing) to take me out for lunch. You know it’s bad when this shirt/rugby shirt combo seems aspirational…

Absolutely relate. They must have attended the same fashion college.

AlwaysKindaKnewYoudBeTheDeathOfMe · 20/09/2024 17:05

Christ, they're some unsexy footwear.

Tassels????

Just no to tassels in every single possible instance.

He needs told 😂

DouglasBader · 20/09/2024 17:07

As others have said, cut off the tassles.

Tell him it is purely a safety precaution, as you have heard about someone who lost a leg when a shoe tassle got caught up in the mechanism of an escalator.

SquirrelSoShiny · 20/09/2024 17:10

My fanjo snapped shut at the sight of those shoes. And yet you have a toddler. My question is: how?

AlwaysKindaKnewYoudBeTheDeathOfMe · 20/09/2024 17:10

Just googled 'wtf is a snaffle' and woah. Just woah there.

Although I kinda like the sound of the consultant who dresses like shit 😂 Graphic tees are not so bad in my book.

Wheelemin77 · 20/09/2024 17:19

I'm weirdly both with and against him here. I can't stand those type of loafers, but I am also a lover of classic shoe styles, of which this loafer is a variety of. My wife hates my love of classic Oxfords, but all I can see it the most beautiful and symmetrical shoe. She calls them old man shoes, but I can't think of a better shoe for a suit.

God no burn them and bury the ash.
They remind me of a pair of school shoes my mother got me and i had to go to school in them.
I was bullied for weeks with my man shoes.

SensibleSigma · 20/09/2024 17:23

DH has these waiting for his current shoes to wear through.

I’m bewildered at his ability to source such fugliness.

Cherrysoup · 20/09/2024 17:25

With a block heel, I’d be quite happy. For me! Could he be persuaded to wear decent brogues?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 20/09/2024 17:26

Yes I really hate them!

Definitely expect to see them worn with red trousers, possibly plus tweed jacket or similar.

Also they seem to be favoured by men whose feet are very small but the man is overweight.

These are quite nice because they are very unashamedly fugly, iyswim. They’re mean to be fugly.

Ohnobackagain · 20/09/2024 17:27

@fao
I’m with @AiryFairyLights - first instinct, cut them off and feign ignorance. Even better if there is a way to make it happen when not at home (eg when he is at the gym arrange a little shoe re-work) 🫣😬

RandomUsernameHere · 20/09/2024 17:28

Those ones are awful but tasseled loafers in general can look really good.

I really like this style of shoe!!
