I'm not a pet owner, although have had pets in my childhood.

Many of my friends and family members have dogs... And I'm just always so surprised to see how their hygiene standards change when they get a pet....
No dogs on the sofa/bed... But how is it suddenly acceptable?
Dogs around the table and sniffing around food that's low eg coffee table.
And then the owners stroking the pets and letting it sniff/lick hands and then eating without washing first??
My sister in law is awful for it... Her and her children are all petting the dog while eating and then taking more food from the plates which are for everyone. In-between this, the dogs led licking it's nethers before coming back for another sniff around the food 🤢
I can't be the only person to think this is disgusting? 😂🤦🏾‍♀️

You won’t be keeping your shoes on in my home.
Dog has his feet washed after going outside, rugs are washed regularly, his bedding is changed weekly, I vacuum daily. I wash my hands after smoothing him, he’s not a licker. Doesn’t go on the furniture or upstairs, pretty much his own choice.

Basically some people are clean, some aren’t. Some of you don’t wash your hands after using the toilet, some of you pick your nose and flick the contents. Probably most of you have snotty, dribbling kids at home, teenagers with dirty plates in their bedrooms, grotty hand towels, dirty toilets, filthy sheets, men who say they wash their hands after the loo but don’t!

A work colleague came back from the loo once with period blood on her finger- which I pointed out to her, absolutely vile. I’ve been in homes where you wipe your feet on the way out, and they haven’t owned a single animal.

Humans are basically crawling with bacteria, viruses and fungi. @cuckooooooo your house will smell, all houses do.

Edited

You’ve nailed it. 👏

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 20/09/2024 06:23

@RickyGervaislovesdogs had nailed it.

SecondFavouriteDinosaur · 20/09/2024 07:01

People always say ‘if you’ve got a dog your house will smell, you’re just nose blind to it’ always use it as some sort of ‘gotcha’. I mean… maybe it does, but so what? The people who live here can’t smell it so it doesn’t bother us, and the people who don’t live here don’t have to visit if it bothers them.
We have a dog. We also have a cleaner twice a week. We have plenty of visitors, all of whom are happy to stay over and seem to enjoy our hospitality. We’ve never had visitors who haven’t returned, in fact all our visitors come pretty regularly. So the dog and the smell must not bother them much either, otherwise I’m sure they’d stay away!

PurpleChrayn · 20/09/2024 07:02

Every dog owner I know has a dirty, smelly house. Without exception.

broccolienthusiast · 20/09/2024 07:05

Dog smell > people on keto diets🤢

How I agree with you! It is utterly revolting! Animals are not meant to be in the house.
Their shitty bums on sofas and carpets .... makes me want to throw up!
Male dogs and their ejaculate around the place; bitches dripping about the place while on heat.
It is all utterly grim.
And babies and toddlers around dogs is gross.
I remember watching my baby crawl on the carpet at my ILs when their dog startied scudding about on its arse and I was told that the "poor thing" had a supporting anal gland ... jeez!!!

My animal is meant to be in my house 😁

Prescottdanni123 · 20/09/2024 07:26

Tbh I always find being judged by someone who doesn't have dogs quite amusing.

My dog has better hygiene standards than some humans I've met. My friend's husband puts his hand down his trousers and scratches his arse, no matter where he is, including buffets. He doesn't go to wash his hand afterwards. I know more people who do things like this, as well as picking their nose, not washing their hands after going to the bog etc. I find this more disgusting than my dog jumping up on the bed for a quick cuddle or sitting at my feet waiting for a few crumbs to fall on the floor tbh

Greyyyybeornot · 19/09/2024 21:01

I hear you, but there’s evidence that children who grow up with dogs have a stronger and healthier gut microbiome and better immune systems etc so maybe it’s good to be slightly dirty?!

This.
IMO some MNers are so obsessed with hygiene, that any germs unfortunate enough to get trodden in will probably commit mass suicide on the spot.

Sod off with the dirty.

You just know skanky people.

iamawarriorwhojustcrieseasily · 20/09/2024 07:31

Yes we do....And we don't care what you think, any more than you care what we do. :)

The thing is, the dog haters on here seem to care a lot about what dog owners do. Far less than I care about their opinion. They claim to be unable to stand them yet they seem to go out of their way to come into contact with them. The amount of people who go to dog friendly cafe or dog park and then complain that there is dogs. Go to a dog free cafe or park then. And then they try to say that there are not any dog free spaces. Sorry but that's bullshit. I live in the lake district, which is the dog capital of the UK and we still have cafes and spaces that don't allow dogs. It's so bizarre it's funny. These threads are always great for when I need a good laugh.

It's the proper venom that you can almost feel in some of the posts as well.

Like they're really trying hard to offend 🤣

I find it very sad!

Well yes, of course. But presumably most toddlers "may wee poo vomit or schmear without warning" for a limited period of time.

A dog may continue to wee, poo, etc. in or around your home for maybe 15 years or more.

I'm not trying to be anti-dog. I'm just pointing out that toileting for toddlers and for dogs are completely different things.

A pup will pee and poo indoors for a very short period of time, until it’s toilet trained.

I agree with @Fluffyowl00 re toddlers. I adore my nieces and nephews and am known by my friends for being welcoming to children. But even past toddlerhood kids can leave the house a grubby, sticky mess. And I’m more likely to catch something nasty from another human than a dog, so I’ll rest easy about my clean, but relaxed home.

They always sound so uptight and miserable. Trying their hardest to be scathing with “you smell” comments. Just get a dog and be happy!

Jifmicroliquid · 20/09/2024 08:26

Honestly, I find small children more grim. The things I watch my friends kids do- picking their nose, sucking their fingers then touching the TV remote. Give me a dog any day!

Yes, as if we care what people with that level of angry vitriol think! We are all here chilling with our dogs!

Catza · 20/09/2024 08:33

We don’t let our dog to sit on a sofa or sniff the food but yeah, we probably do occasionally touch her and then proceed to touch something from a shared plate. “Disgusting” is a subjective thing, isn’t it? What’s important to consider is that we are all still alive and I honestly can’t remember last time I had a tummy bug. So correlation between touching dogs and getting harmed by whatever dirt you think is on them seems pretty low to none. In fact, I would hazard a guess that we could all use a bit more bacteria in our lives.

rainfallpurevividcat · 20/09/2024 08:34

I certainly don't have as high standards as some Mumsnet posters about cleaning and laundry.

I feel sorry for people who are so germ phobic. Life must be exhausting and restricting for you and all those around you.

MsKatia · 20/09/2024 08:35

I'm always surprised when some of these people post. I get that not everyone likes dogs, but some of the comments 😂. It's like the underbelly of society are just lying in wait to think up the worst possible descriptions of how repulsive dogs/cats/MILs can be.

I'm having a bit of an emotional day today, personal stuff, and my dog just makes it better. So does my MIL btw.

ellebelli · 20/09/2024 08:38

Crysti · 19/09/2024 20:59

😂😂😂 I’ve dogs but can’t actually argue with this 😂😂

Totally agree.
But my dogs are the best and I wouldn't have it any other way!
Sometimes I lie in my dogs bed with him 😄

LilBowWow · 20/09/2024 08:38

“It’s been 8 hours, I can’t contain it any longer … must talk about dog’s arseholes again”.

And dog owners are the weird ones? 🤯

Hope you’re ok @MsKatia

dabbadoo · 20/09/2024 08:39

dogs are better than people. I don't mind putting up with their funky smell
