I'm not a pet owner, although have had pets in my childhood.

Many of my friends and family members have dogs... And I'm just always so surprised to see how their hygiene standards change when they get a pet....
No dogs on the sofa/bed... But how is it suddenly acceptable?
Dogs around the table and sniffing around food that's low eg coffee table.
And then the owners stroking the pets and letting it sniff/lick hands and then eating without washing first??
My sister in law is awful for it... Her and her children are all petting the dog while eating and then taking more food from the plates which are for everyone. In-between this, the dogs led licking it's nethers before coming back for another sniff around the food 🤢
I can't be the only person to think this is disgusting? 😂🤦🏾‍♀️

You’d hate our house…Ddog is allowed on the sofa, our beds, licks our plates etc 🤷🏻‍♀️
She’s a beautiful 11 year old rescue dog, saved from a bin as a puppy…she’s the nicest one in our family…

Mari2003 · 19/09/2024 23:37

Good for the immune system.

Cat owners on the other hand actively encourage their pets to shit in the house!

Greyyyybeornot · 19/09/2024 21:01

I hear you, but there’s evidence that children who grow up with dogs have a stronger and healthier gut microbiome and better immune systems etc so maybe it’s good to be slightly dirty?!

Not stronger. But rather more tolerant immune system.

Dogs as you know them wouldn’t exist without people. They’re fake and we invented them.

That’s such an interesting perspective. Dogs were domesticated and bred for certain characteristics. By that standard people wouldn’t exist without people. In this brave new world of fillers and trout pouts are they fake and did we invent them?

MonsteraMama · 19/09/2024 23:44

Having grown up on a farm and having a good healthy grubby childhood for it, I love reading threads about people being horrified by animals in the house. You haven't lived until you've woken up to the fecking donkey sticking his head through your bedroom door and heeeee haaaaawing at ten million decibels at 5am because he's managed to open the back door again.

I’ve met some disgusting smelling humans in my time and been in some really manky houses. Some people don’t need to have animals to have poor hygiene standards.

Me too. Used to do home visits where I’d have to sit in such houses for an hour at a time 🤮 Give me dogs any time.

MarvellousMable · 20/09/2024 00:16

All I can say on this matter is that pre-Covid I picked up every cough, snivel, bug etc that was doing the rounds. In 2018 I was sick for three months with some awful respiratory infection.

During the pandemic I got my first dog who trumps like a trooper, slobbers on me and is currently sharing my bed yet I’ve had just one very slight cold in four years.

Coincidence maybe but I do think he has helped to build up my immune system.

Prettypinkponies · 20/09/2024 00:16

I feel like a terrible owner after reading some of these replies. I also think most these things are disgusting. Our dogs don’t go upstairs, don’t get onto the furniture, don’t have any human food so don’t beg/interested in it. I don’t mind a little stroke and then eat but absolutely no licking 🤢 and always wash hands before making food! Our house is FAR from pristine and the dogs are treat like dogs - they’re very much loved but we have boundaries

Sleepandchocolate2202 · 20/09/2024 00:21

I have two dogs, but completely agree with you - that behaviour is disgusting and grosses me out. We don’t do those things. Ours dogs aren’t allowed on the sofas or carpet / upstairs. They are loved and fussed but hands are always cleaned after !!

HollyKnight · 20/09/2024 00:22

Who cares. It's their life. Their house. You don't get a dog for decoration. It is a living creature. It is part of the family. Its presence is going to be known.

UnderPinkSkies · 20/09/2024 00:53

The works isn't sterile, I don't worry about it. I spend a lot of my time with animals, I don't think about hygiene and germs constantly and would hate if if I did.

shittestusernameever · 20/09/2024 01:00

One of my dearest and oldest friends allows her pets to eat from her plates, and her dog has cups of tea 😂😂
I don't tend to visit her tbh and I have a dog! He's not allowed upstairs or on any furniture

SnowFrogJelly · 20/09/2024 01:00

Not all dog owners are like that

PixieMcGraw · 20/09/2024 01:06

Ha ha reading this thread in bed with my dog sleeping on top of the duvet! I'm disgusting! You do you OP!

Cantbelievethatimafoolagain · 20/09/2024 01:25

I find it odd that some don't let their dogs upstairs or sit on the couch. When we first got a dog, we thought it was disgusting letting a dog sleep in your bed etc. But it's honestly the best thing. My dog is so happy in the bed, he'll snuggly up to you, lay upside down in happiness. If you've not let your dog in your bed, just do it once!

If you feel this way about dog owners, you should see toddler owners. My house has never been so disgusting. Best not to allow anything under 5 near you.

warning toddlers may wee poo vomit or schmear without warning. And they won’t tell you. You just have to find it. Or sometimes they do it and you try to catch it.

The dog is the least of my worries.

Well yes, of course. But presumably most toddlers "may wee poo vomit or schmear without warning" for a limited period of time.

A dog may continue to wee, poo, etc. in or around your home for maybe 15 years or more.

I'm not trying to be anti-dog. I'm just pointing out that toileting for toddlers and for dogs are completely different things.

@Ablondiebutagoody
Yes, dogs would be a deal breaker for me in anything, the only time i would be glad to see one, would be on a mountain rescue.
Some homes with dogs look clean, if you didn't see the dog, you would not know there is one in the house, apart from the smell, especially if it's been raining and the dog has been out for a walk.
Dogs should not be allowed in cafes, they are not allowed in shops for a reason.

Dogs are allowed in lots of shops, but there isn't a particular reason when they're not, beyond 'its more hassle for us, we don't want to'. Its just a store policy and might not even be a national store policy for some chains.

Dogs aren't allowed in food prep areas and sterile areas in hospitals for actual reasons, and thats about it.

cuckooooooo · 20/09/2024 04:07

Any house with a dog living in it smells. Many dog owners are also completely blind to the fact that not everyone loves their smelly pooch.

Deliiciousllydifffident · 20/09/2024 04:22

Ohh goody yet another dog hating thread. FFS, give it a rest, yawn.

Deliiciousllydifffident · 20/09/2024 04:34

I prefer how my dog smells to how people smell. Do peeps not realise that houses with people living in them smell? 🤮

terracottafarm · 20/09/2024 04:35

Absolutely not OP! I have a lovely doggo and my house is immaculate, you wouldn't even know I have a dog! So to answer your question, no. I know a lot of people who do not have pets, whose house is filthy.

terracottafarm · 20/09/2024 04:39

Also just to add, we let our dog on the sofa and upstairs, my immune system has got so much better since. I've not had a cold or been unwell in over a year, whereas before, I'd be ill twice maybe three times a year. So coincidence maybe.

cuckooooooo · 20/09/2024 04:40

You're probably nose blind to it. Houses with dogs always smell. I'd rather have a slightly lower immune system than dog genitalia on my sofa.

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 20/09/2024 04:43

You won’t be keeping your shoes on in my home.
Dog has his feet washed after going outside, rugs are washed regularly, his bedding is changed weekly, I vacuum daily. I wash my hands after smoothing him, he’s not a licker. Doesn’t go on the furniture or upstairs, pretty much his own choice.

Basically some people are clean, some aren’t. Some of you don’t wash your hands after using the toilet, some of you pick your nose and flick the contents. Probably most of you have snotty, dribbling kids at home, teenagers with dirty plates in their bedrooms, grotty hand towels, dirty toilets, filthy sheets, men who say they wash their hands after the loo but don’t!

A work colleague came back from the loo once with period blood on her finger- which I pointed out to her, absolutely vile. I’ve been in homes where you wipe your feet on the way out, and they haven’t owned a single animal.

Humans are basically crawling with bacteria, viruses and fungi. @cuckooooooo your house will smell, all houses do.
