I'm not a pet owner, although have had pets in my childhood.

Many of my friends and family members have dogs... And I'm just always so surprised to see how their hygiene standards change when they get a pet....
No dogs on the sofa/bed... But how is it suddenly acceptable?
Dogs around the table and sniffing around food that's low eg coffee table.
And then the owners stroking the pets and letting it sniff/lick hands and then eating without washing first??
My sister in law is awful for it... Her and her children are all petting the dog while eating and then taking more food from the plates which are for everyone. In-between this, the dogs led licking it's nethers before coming back for another sniff around the food 🤢
I can't be the only person to think this is disgusting? 😂🤦🏾‍♀️

Your sister and her family do sound rather revolting.

Sister in law... And yes, you're right😂

An ex of mine had dogs. I would just want a chilled night, cook together, some chicken maybe some sex.......you know, see what happens. But there's dogs crashing around and hair and slobber and he's touching them. Revolting.

some chicken maybe some sex

😂😂😂

EmeraldRoses · 19/09/2024 21:07

I agree with u OP. Everywhere you go now is crawling with dogs Everywhere. People letting their dogs lick their face 🤢 The smell when you walk into a house that has dogs. I'm not kidding I know one woman who lives in a small semi with kids and 7 dogs! SEVEN! 😷

soupfiend · 19/09/2024 21:07

From where Im sitting I can see the cat strolling all over the worktops

So you can add cats owners into the mix as well.

Stompythedinosaur · 19/09/2024 21:08

I think toddlers are far more disgusting hygiene-wise than dogs.

I've had (and loved) both, I think you just accept they are part of your family and live with the consequences.

Foxblue · 19/09/2024 21:09

I have a dog and honestly yes it's a little gross, but I do believe a little exposure is good for the immune system! Now, would I let a really moulting dirty dog sleep in my bed, no - but my dog isn't that. (Not saying she isn't still a bit gross but you know, so am i) I do wash my hands before touching food that someone else might touch or eat and I would absolutely shoo my dog away from food though, that's just impolite not to surely?
However - as a dog owner, I'm so curious about cat owners and hygiene because they are all over tables and counter surfaces?? Cat owners, what's the deal, do you do anything specific to counteract this?

OP you’re probably perfectly correct 😄

My house and gardens contain too many animals to count - we have more dogs than is probably sensible and the amount of small furries probably cost us the equivalent of a mortgage payment each month!

So much hair and hay everywhere - no matter how much I keep on top of things there’s bound to be something unmentionable floating around at any given time.

But I wouldn’t change it for the world! This is our world, and our happiness. Given the choice between all my wonderful animals or a pristine clean home, I would choose the former every time 😊

Depends on the toddler😂

bigageap · 19/09/2024 21:13

You need to spend half an hour at a farm or with a horsey lady like myself 🤣🤣 you’d be horrified!!

Sprampyourface · 19/09/2024 21:13

I know lots of hygienic and unhygienic dog owners, the same as non dog owners. But my friend lets her child nap in the dog bed with the dog and that’s one of the grossest things I’ve ever seen. When the child woke up and got out of the dog bed he had a bit of dog biscuit/treat stuck to his face and crumbs on his clothes and he smelt like the dog.

Mind you a Facebook post that went viral a while ago of the teabag mountain on someone’s oven was also very gross and nothing to do with a dog so I guess we could just say lots of people are gross and it’s nothing to do with if they have a dog.

DarkForces · 19/09/2024 21:13

Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn

Beth216 · 19/09/2024 21:13

I read that people were being encouraged to not wash their hands after stroking their dog because our immune systems are in desperate need. We live in a far too sanitised world and it causes all sorts of problems for our immune and digestive systems.

I agree. My dogs have never come up to me with green snot all over their faces and attempted to rub it all over my clothes.

icouldholditwithacobweb · 19/09/2024 21:16

I often think something similar, but about people with small children. I find my dogs way less gross than other people's sticky, snotty, grubby kids (especially kids that pick their noses and either eat it or wipe it in random places, or kids that run all over furniture with their outdoor shoes on). I especially hate having a child's beloved but utterly filthy soft toy anywhere near me - the ones that look like they haven't been washed ever and have clearly been in a child's mouth and god knows where else. And I am not sure I have the words for parents who pick food off their child's face and eat it themselves (seen more than one of my friends do this with their babies and it's gross gross gross).

I don't feel the need to post about it though as it's up to parents what they tolerate. Same for dog owners. Other people's filth is always more disgusting than your own.

baddaughter23 · 19/09/2024 21:18

I do admit my hygiene standards have gone down a lot since having dogs. The dogs eat off our plates (which are then put in a hot wash in the dishwasher), lick us, sit on our sofas, shit in our garden. It's part and parcel of it and to be honest, my house isn't filthy (albeit a bit hairy) and none of us get ill so I'm fine with it.

What a joyless thread. And what a miserable existence you must have op to spend you time judging and slagging off other people's choices when they literally have no impact on you.

Leavesandacorns · 19/09/2024 21:19

I think your own dog just becomes part of your acceptable germ bubble. Mine goes on the furniture and I have no issues stroking him while eating a sandwich or whatever... couldn't do it with a strange dog though 🤷‍♀️

Similar to how I'm ok with my preschool DC wiping their faces on, me but would find it gross if a random child did it.

ReggaetonLente · 19/09/2024 21:20

I went to get a key cut the other day and the shop owner keeps his dog with them there during the day. He isn’t able to let it out for a wee so lets the dog just piss all over the floor. I was stepping in puddles of dog piss, in a shop. Revolting.

BellaBionda · 19/09/2024 21:22

Dogs are gross. The licking and walking around swinging a bag of poo 🤮Much prefer my cats who are so clean at home and poo in my neighbour’s garden ☺️

Summatoruvva · 19/09/2024 21:22

I love the indignant claims of a fresh smelling house in spite of dog arses and dander. It always stinks.

LifeExperience · 19/09/2024 21:23

Unless you're about to perform surgery I wouldn't worry too much about a little dirt. Glad I was raised in the 1960s and 70s before everybody became a neurotic germophobe.

Woahtherehoney · 19/09/2024 21:25

You’re probably right but oh well, the joy my animals bring to my life is more important than being so hygienic (bet your houses aren’t that clean either if you actually checked!)

and yes, my dog and cats sleep in my bed and I wouldn’t change it for the world

Mine doesn’t. I spend a fortune on reed diffusers and scented candles to make sure it doesn’t.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 19/09/2024 21:26

Dog eats another dog’s shit.

Dog pukes.

Dog eats its own puke then licks its balls.

Then it licks your mouth.

Oooh doggy kisses !
