I'm not a pet owner, although have had pets in my childhood.

Many of my friends and family members have dogs... And I'm just always so surprised to see how their hygiene standards change when they get a pet....
No dogs on the sofa/bed... But how is it suddenly acceptable?
Dogs around the table and sniffing around food that's low eg coffee table.
And then the owners stroking the pets and letting it sniff/lick hands and then eating without washing first??
My sister in law is awful for it... Her and her children are all petting the dog while eating and then taking more food from the plates which are for everyone. In-between this, the dogs led licking it's nethers before coming back for another sniff around the food 🤢
I can't be the only person to think this is disgusting? 😂🤦🏾‍♀️

I don't have or want any pets and my house definitely isn't pristine 🤣 We've got plenty of germs to keep our immune systems where they need to be 👍

But I do dislike the way that dogs have taken over since Covid. Everywhere you go there's dog hair, slobber and barking. I've been in pubs where dogs are licking the tables 🤢and licking people's faces and hands 🤢 dogs tongues going in people's mouths 🤮People walking along swinging bags of poo 🤢 Noooooo....

Apparently dogs are great. But it's a bit like other people's kids isn't it? No one likes them 🤣

I'm not bashing dogs... They're little cuties. It's the owners I have issues with 😂
Disclaimer... As someone kindly pointed out, obviously not all dog owners...

Well I haven't sprouted a tail or started barking yet! Nor have I had an arm or leg suddenly drop off or coughed up a furball so I'll keep living with my dog and do what I normally do which is apologise for the dog hair and keep my German shepherd away from visitors unless they say they're ok with her ❤️
She's currently sprawled at the end of my bed snoring 🤣🤣🤣

sweetsardineface · 19/09/2024 22:48

@Eenymeanymineymo where the hell do you work?

Peoplerepublicocs · 19/09/2024 22:50

@JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn
Like Billy Connolly says, " kids are like farts, you only like your own" 😂 same with pets I think.

happygertie · 19/09/2024 22:51

Humans are far more grim

friendlycat · 19/09/2024 22:52

I loathe people who take their dogs into country pubs and let them sit on the cushioned seats and curl up. Then the next person sits on the seat and is covered with dog hair.

Fine take your well behaved dog into a pub but they settle on the floor.

Last lunch out was dominated by a yapping dog constantly not wanting to be out at lunch. Why take it then.

LoobyLous · 19/09/2024 22:52

I’ve met some disgusting smelling humans in my time and been in some really manky houses. Some people don’t need to have animals to have poor hygiene standards.

soupfiend · 19/09/2024 21:07

From where Im sitting I can see the cat strolling all over the worktops

So you can add cats owners into the mix as well.

You know cats make their own rules in their home 😺

Buildingthefuture · 19/09/2024 22:55

LOL, op, you’ve been to my house? Not really, my house, despite having dogs is pretty pristine but I can sniff out judgy people like you a mile off and so you wouldn’t have been invited. I have very high standards for the people I allow in my house.

I agree, I'm not keen on other peoples kids but I will let their dogs kiss me and try to pinch my food all day long!

Ubugly · 19/09/2024 22:59

Tbh most peoples hygiene is repulsive.

Cats lick their fur and people stroke them as I would then eat. Maybe I'm gross.

Waitingfordoggo · 19/09/2024 23:06

You sound a bit clenched OP.

I have a dog and yes, he’s pretty disgusting. But I adore him - he’s like my best mate. He’s allowed on the sofas and he sleeps on our bed. I don’t share my food with him though- I don’t share food with anyone. 😬

We hardly ever get coughs, colds or stomach upsets- it’s good for your immune system to live with pets. You don’t have to ever meet my dog or come to my house OP so no need to worry about it.

WiddlinDiddlin · 19/09/2024 23:10

No more gross than other humans, particularly at the mobile but not great at washing/covering mouths when coughing/wiping bums and noses stage.

You'll be at much more risk of catching stuff from a kid than from a dog.

Of course some people do a good job of keeping their charges clean, their homes clean despite the small muck spreading disease vector/s that live there and some do not.

I have never caught a disease or parasite from a dog.

I cannot say the same for children.

LaineyCee · 19/09/2024 23:12

People (regardless of whether they have pets or not, or whether they have children or not) have different ideas about what hygiene practices are necessary or desirable.

In a commercial kitchen, these are standardised and legally enforced.
In someone else’s home…. If you don’t like it, you can leave. But it’s worth remembering there are probably lots of things that you do (or don’t do) in your home that many others could choose to judge you on.

Icannoteven · 19/09/2024 23:15

Yes, I think you have to have a reasonably laid back approach to mud, hair and germs to have a dog. As in, not be too anxious about it. In reality, I’m not sure people often get ill/catch diseases from their dogs regularly though so perhaps not unreasonably lax, just relaxed. Not fussy.

Milkand2sugarsplease · 19/09/2024 23:16

We have a dog.

I never pet him when prepping or eating food.
At these points he's either in his bed or in the living room - goes there by choice now after being trained not to beg - even with a toddler dropping food left, right and centre.

Only comes on the sofa when invited onto his blanket on there, which is also washed weekly.

Don't have a coffee table but if we did he would be trained not to surf it.

He doesn't lick people, I hate licky dogs, I don't want washing every 5 mins!! Again, training!

House is hoovered/mopped regularly year round and he's trained to give his paws on coming into the house after a wet walk so we can dry them.

Doesn't take treats into the living room and doesn't have certain treats at all - think the greasy bone treats that leave a grim trail in their wake.

No, I don't think I have low hygiene standards, 🤷🏼‍♀️

Livelovebehappy · 19/09/2024 23:18

I love dogs. More than people. They’re loyal, uncomplicated and loving. Humans generally can be pretty crap. Look at the state of the world we live in - full of shitty people with shitty attitudes. In my opinion…..

StarDolphins · 19/09/2024 23:20

Could you have not just added this to one of the 672 other ‘I hate dogs’ posts. seems a bit attention seeking/boredom.

Livelovebehappy · 19/09/2024 23:20

And many of my friends and family with dogs have pretty good standards of hygiene OP. Maybe it’s the circles you move in……

Ghilliegums · 19/09/2024 23:25

I always feel sorry for families without dogs.

FinneganFois · 19/09/2024 23:30

@Ablondiebutagoody
Yes, dogs would be a deal breaker for me in anything, the only time i would be glad to see one, would be on a mountain rescue.
Some homes with dogs look clean, if you didn't see the dog, you would not know there is one in the house, apart from the smell, especially if it's been raining and the dog has been out for a walk.
Dogs should not be allowed in cafes, they are not allowed in shops for a reason.

Dogs as you know them wouldn’t exist without people. They’re fake and we invented them.

Cavend · 19/09/2024 23:36

To the posters saying their dog's paws are wiped before entering their homes, is that all?
There are pathogens (that's micro cak) on the dog's undercarriage, and they are allowed to sit/lie on sofas where people sit? Ugh
