I'm not a pet owner, although have had pets in my childhood.

Many of my friends and family members have dogs... And I'm just always so surprised to see how their hygiene standards change when they get a pet....
No dogs on the sofa/bed... But how is it suddenly acceptable?
Dogs around the table and sniffing around food that's low eg coffee table.
And then the owners stroking the pets and letting it sniff/lick hands and then eating without washing first??
My sister in law is awful for it... Her and her children are all petting the dog while eating and then taking more food from the plates which are for everyone. In-between this, the dogs led licking it's nethers before coming back for another sniff around the food 🤢
I can't be the only person to think this is disgusting? 😂🤦🏾‍♀️

I really don't care. I have a dog and a cat and they are family members. I wouldn't wash my hands after stroking them anymore than I would touching a baby or young child. They're not dirty or disgusting to me.

They will be far cleaner than most humans anyway.

Oh well 🤷‍♀️

This.

We haven’t died yet in our house…

mellowfell · 19/09/2024 21:57

Dog hairs all over their clothes coming out their food 😭

My dog doesn’t shed. I do, unfortunately. 🤪

rainsofcastamere · 19/09/2024 22:04

Ah I'll carry on as I am, letting my dog on the settees and beds, sitting next to us at the table, loving him, kissing him and so will everyone in our house! I couldn't give a fuck what anyone else thinks! Can't remember the last time any of us were poorly either so, yeah you do you boo! 🐕 🐶 🐩

kitsuneghost · 19/09/2024 22:04

To be fair they walk about with shit in their hands/pockets. I think you wouldn't be too fussed after that

I agree but I have a dog and I don’t care! I think some germs are good for you! I don’t let my dog lick my face/son’s face. We wash hands before eating. I think the rest can’t be avoided… she sleeps on my head, she walks in the garden and then in the house and we don’t wash her paws! She brings so much joy that it doesn’t bother me!

Same as me. My house is very doggy now, I wouldn't have countenanced it before. I dont care now. Risks v benefits analysis; the dog won.

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 19/09/2024 22:05

I can honestly, hand on heart, say I'd rather share personal space with any dog over a huge majority of other humans. People can be absolutely, and willingly, disgusting.

Ghilliegums · 19/09/2024 22:06

My dogs are old now and they stink- the terrier has gum disease and his breath is deathly. The labrador farts constantly. The terrier sleeps wherever he likes and the lab flops about. There is hair everywhere- I do hoover of course but it never seems to get it all.

Luckily I have a lot of lovely friends who couldn't care less, and my dogs bring me joy everyday.

The last time I got ill was in March 2020 - possibly early covid. I've had a stomach upset twice in the last 10 years. So clearly my hygiene is fine.

The worst smelling house I’ve visited where the smell was due to a pet it was rabbits not dogs! I still visited though, you ‘got used to’ the smell after about ten minutes being there anyway and the family loved the rabbits so much so it was actually nice to see them anyway.

ringoutsolsticebells · 19/09/2024 22:09

I have 2 dogs. And I simply don't care. Some care. But they don't live with me so whatever

PresidentBarklett · 19/09/2024 22:09

aliceinanwonderland · 19/09/2024 21:55

You are joking aren't you?!

Actually, sort of, in that I don't invite it, and obviously extricate myself when she does but it's really not a big deal to me. I certainly don't wash my mouth out or anything afterwards but 'love' was probably being a bit facetious.

I do, however, love when she licks my face as she's usually very happy when she does it and, as I love HER it's not the 'eurgh' experience it would be with another dog.

Helps that she's a sausage dog and has rather a neat little tongue rather than a giant slobbery thing.

Clingfilm · 19/09/2024 22:10

I think it's most house pet owners to be fair. I'm a case in point, my house is undoubtedly less hygienic than it was before we got cats.

In fact, I was horrified the first week we got them, the smell, footprints, food in a bowl on the floor, fur...

Love them to bits and wouldn't be without them now of course!

Grabyourpassportandmyhand · 19/09/2024 22:12

My dog definitely makes my house smell and the shedding hairs are everywhere. However, its been scientifically proven that dogs make us happier, benefit us emotionally and physically so well worth the extra bit of dirt around the place :)

AgileGreenSeal · 19/09/2024 21:01

The whole world is suddenly full of badly behaved dogs. The beach especially. And what they leave behind. 😫

That's not badly behaved dogs that's badly behaved people, please make the correct distinction.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 19/09/2024 22:15

Ok… after another thread today. Now I want to see the Venn Diagram of dogs are unhygienic but I share bath water with my spouse/kids/neighbor down the street.

Childfreecatlady · 19/09/2024 22:17

Scandicc · 19/09/2024 21:27

When comparing notes with my friend who has 3 young children, they have pissed on the carpet way more often than my dog ever has 🤷‍♀️

Exactly this, kids are waaaaaay more disgusting than dogs.

Dogs don't count. I'm extremely clean and rather germ-phobic, I get horribly cracked hands as I wash them too much, I creep round supermarkets in the middle of the night in flu season so I don't have to get too close to people... but will happily sleep with my dogs, stroke them when preparing food, casually pick hair out of my mouth... I have no idea why it's different - I know exactly where they go and I know how disgusting they are... and I don't care. Good for the immune system! They are a lot less likely to make me ill though to be fair - humans have given me all sorts of diseases, never even caught a slight sniffle from a dog...

Childfreecatlady · 19/09/2024 22:27

Eenymeanymineymo · 19/09/2024 21:48

But humans are even worse. The stench from some people is worse than any dog. And dogs don't go out shopping etc. Eg just this week....a lady does a poo, she shakes her leg, and eventually it falls onto my shop floor. A man fingers his gf over the freezers. Another customer has shit running all down his legs. This isnt even rare. It's daily. So a slightly whiffy dog is welcome. Oh, and if you think I'm lying....I'm happy to send evidence. Humans are the worst animals.

Jesus! I mean, I know humans are disgusting but wow, I had no idea how disgusting some people really are! That is grim AF

Lemonadeand · 19/09/2024 22:29

I used to clean more when we had a dog because of the hair and mud she brought in. I would sweep and mop the floors every day whereas now I don’t. And hoover the sofas. So the house got dirtier definitely but I cleaned it more.

I miss the dog but I don’t miss the extra work.

Peoplerepublicocs · 19/09/2024 22:34

Yu my house is a hair infested mank palace, but I am nearly 60 and have had dogs and cats all my life and as far as I know I haven't gotten ill because of them so 🤷

BridgetJonesBigPants · 19/09/2024 22:34

Agree. Our houses are often dirtier and smellier. And we are healthier and less allergic. Win some, lose some.

aSpanielintheworks · 19/09/2024 22:34

You don't notice if your house smells of dog on a day to day basis.
You do notice when you come home from holiday for the first 10 seconds you smell it as others do.
My house smells of dog.
I don't care because I love him.

Fluffyowl00 · 19/09/2024 22:36

If you feel this way about dog owners, you should see toddler owners. My house has never been so disgusting. Best not to allow anything under 5 near you.

warning toddlers may wee poo vomit or schmear without warning. And they won’t tell you. You just have to find it. Or sometimes they do it and you try to catch it.

The dog is the least of my worries.
