I'm not a pet owner, although have had pets in my childhood.

Many of my friends and family members have dogs... And I'm just always so surprised to see how their hygiene standards change when they get a pet....
No dogs on the sofa/bed... But how is it suddenly acceptable?
Dogs around the table and sniffing around food that's low eg coffee table.
And then the owners stroking the pets and letting it sniff/lick hands and then eating without washing first??
My sister in law is awful for it... Her and her children are all petting the dog while eating and then taking more food from the plates which are for everyone. In-between this, the dogs led licking it's nethers before coming back for another sniff around the food 🤢
I can't be the only person to think this is disgusting? 😂🤦🏾‍♀️

Yes I probably do v some people. Thing is, I don't really care and nor does anyone else who lives in our house Grin DDog is a babe. She's welcome on the sofa or to come and get a head scratch any time.

I'm sure this was meant to be offensive but honestly I doubt anyone with a dog really cares what someone else thinks about it.

Scandicc · 19/09/2024 21:27

When comparing notes with my friend who has 3 young children, they have pissed on the carpet way more often than my dog ever has 🤷‍♀️

fisherhatesgravel72 · 19/09/2024 21:30

We go to pubs in the Lake District a lot and every single one has dogs lying all over the place. Thinking about it now, the bar staff are always bending down to stroke and kiss them - then go and handle drinking glasses and plates of food. I feel ill now!! 😳

Isseywith3witchycats · 19/09/2024 21:31

Not a dog but im looking at my 17 year old smelly bag cat and quite frankly i dont care what germs he brings in, my house is clean enough to be healthy and mucky enough to be happy

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 19/09/2024 21:26

Dog eats another dog’s shit.

Dog pukes.

Dog eats its own puke then licks its balls.

Then it licks your mouth.

Oooh doggy kisses !

#furbaby 🥰

I knew someone who's dad let the dog lick his feet 🤢

I do admit my hygiene standards have gone down a lot since having dogs. The dogs eat off our plates (which are then put in a hot wash in the dishwasher), lick us, sit on our sofas, shit in our garden. It's part and parcel of it and to be honest, my house isn't filthy (albeit a bit hairy) and none of us get ill so I'm fine with it.

What a joyless thread. And what a miserable existence you must have op to spend you time judging and slagging off other people's choices when they literally have no impact on you.

This.

I do believe there is truth in dog owners being a bit healthier. I grew up with dogs and then didn’t have one for a few years. For a couple of years, just before and after Covid, I kept getting chest infection after chest infection, no idea why. I was shitting myself every time one of my kids came home from nursery with a cold. Then we got a dog 2 years ago and I’ve just realised that it was around the same time that this stopped happening. Some exposure is clearly good for you.

LaurieFairyCake · 19/09/2024 21:31

I sleep with a pile of dogs

Way better than disgusting children. I remember fondly them vomiting in my hair, one of those fuckers got shit in my mouth once!

Children are disgusting, nit ridden creatures who pick their noses and spread every germ
and Covid

Dogs are fluffy gorgeous fuckers - much better bed companions

I'm an absolute tramp then 😂

baddaughter23 · 19/09/2024 21:34

Woahtherehoney · 19/09/2024 21:25

You’re probably right but oh well, the joy my animals bring to my life is more important than being so hygienic (bet your houses aren’t that clean either if you actually checked!)

and yes, my dog and cats sleep in my bed and I wouldn’t change it for the world

This sums it up for me.

Kids and dogs are gross. They do gross things. They spread germs and make mess. But I would much rather have that and all the love and joy they bring than have a clinical, miserable existence where my only enjoyment comes from slagging off other people on MN.

BIossomtoes · 19/09/2024 21:25

Mine doesn’t. I spend a fortune on reed diffusers and scented candles to make sure it doesn’t.

I would never have a pet, so I have zero personal experience, but while I have visited people with pets whose house has stunk, I equally have friends with pets whose houses do not stink. I don’t think it’s pet dependant though because some people who don’t have pets also have stinky houses eg my cousin whose house smells of nappies and sour milk because she doesn’t wash up enough/properly or take the bins out much. A friend whose house smells like damp laundry all the time and a relative whose house smells like a chip shop because most food is deep fried.

Serencwtch · 19/09/2024 21:34

Probably but then our kids have lower rates of asthma & allergies & better mental health.

Dolly567 · 19/09/2024 21:35

They make me feel dirty if in they are inside!
Maybe because ours had its own out house as a child it was absolutely huge and outdoor space ..

SecondFavouriteDinosaur · 19/09/2024 21:35

Well… have any of them died from it?

K0OLA1D · 19/09/2024 21:37

Meh. Don't come to my house then.

We have cats and a dog and we're never ill so go figure 🤷‍♀️

Kids bring home Norovirus.
Dogs bring home tennis balls.

Love ‘em both. ❤️

TouringTheTearooms · 19/09/2024 21:38

Agree with a pp who said your own dog becomes part of your accepted germ bubble.

Ddog is allowed on the sofa. I don't care if she licks my hand, I don't immediately rush to wash it. If she approaches for a cuddle I'll put my face right on her shoulders or chest.

I would NOT do any of that with a random dog though because...well, ewww, germs 😂 But our dog is exempt 😄

My dog licks my feet and carries on right up to my knees.

Equally, or....?

PresidentBarklett · 19/09/2024 21:40

Tbf, my dog literally shoves her tongue in my mouth and I genuinely love it. I think its a love thing. I don't enjoy being linked by other dogs, but I swear that to me her breath smells like perfume, rather than what I logically know is more like rancid tuna. Can't be explained.

K0OLA1D · 19/09/2024 21:40

I think it is disgusting too.

Cafes, pubs, shops. Everywhere is crawling with them now.

But in a minute all the dog worshippers will come along to tell them we are unreasonable and that their Fido is not in the least bit grim 🤣

Are you calling my darling Fido GRIM?
Just because she rolls in fox~ poo?

There was a woman on a reality tv show who let her dog lick/drink her drink and lick her mouth/in her mouth and social media was split who thought it was gross and who let their dogs do the same so I think a lot of people just see it as normal.
