Family member awarded enhanced pip - AIBU?

Orangecrocs · 19/09/2024 15:42

My family member has just been awarded enhanced pip in both living and mobility components.
Shes told me that she’s twisted the truth during the assessment and told the assessor that she has lots of pain and can’t really walk at all, but she walks all the time as I see her out and about - we live in a hilly area. I know people who are in a wheelchair and struggle to get enhanced rate - so I really don’t understand how she’s managed this.
I know people will say mind your own business but she’s told me she’s actually lied to them.

HungryLittleCrocodile · 19/09/2024 17:26

Why is your 'family member' telling you the ins and outs of her PIP claim/PIP assessment? And why on earth is she telling you she bullshitted/ exaggerated/ lied to make sure she got an enhanced award? Confused

I have never known this in real life; people bragging about their disability awards to all and sundry, and blathering about how much they have bullshitted. Why would anyone do this? Knowing they are very likely dropping themselves in it, and throwing themselves under the bus, as someone could report them?

Only on Mumsnet does this happen. Very strange. 😕

As a pp said, it is VERY hard to get PIP, and will be almost impossible under false pretences. Why let this get in the way of a good chance to benefit bash though eh @Orangecrocs ?!! Hmm

gloriawasright · 19/09/2024 17:27

I'm out !
I should not have posted on this as I should have remembered how this all goes.
Know your place disabled member of society. Know your place .😡

My ex’s mum openly admits that she lies to pip (brags about it) and she gets high rate of both components. She claims her anxiety is so severe that she cannot leave her home and when she ran out of milk she had a breakdown - she literally laughed when retelling this made up facade. Her anxiety is apparently so bad that she needs a blue badge and high rate mobility and care but she travels to foreign countries constantly, she is at raves every single weekend. She has people in and out of her home and when she got into a Facebook argument, she drove 5 hours to their home to continue the argument - but apparently this woman’s anxiety is so bad she cannot leave her home.

I’m physically disabled with agonising pain daily, the only time I leave my home is for the school run - and even half of the time I have family members do that for me. I cry everyday as I don’t know what to do with myself as I cannot function due to the pain - even morphine doesn’t touch it. My entire life is messed up, I cannot even get out of bed properly let alone take my son to the park due to the pain, yet I cannot even get the top care. When I did have a carer, my council tried to make me pay £80 for only 3 hours A WEEK, which I couldn’t afford as a disabled single parent - so I have no one to help me clean my home, make my dinners, help me get to the pharmacy or hospital appointments, day to day help. Yet this is woman who admits she lies for top benefits, she gets someone to come clean her home top to bottom weekly (free of charge), a free taxi to and from each medical appointment, someone to come check in on her weekly and make sure she’s ‘ok’. I get no help at all, my entire life I have lived back and forward at hospitals. When I tried to end my life because of the pain a few years ago, I got discharged with no thought or care or routine appointments to make sure I was ok.

Genuine claimants and people in need don’t get the support they deserve, and for benefits they often have to go to trubunal and fight. We have to struggle alone. The liars among us get everything that we should have - it’s disgusting

Orangecrocs · 19/09/2024 16:15

She hasn’t been asked for any clinical evidence from her doctor.

Sorry I don't this beleive
She wouldn't get PIP at the highest rates with no evidence
Anybody can put in a claim but you need evidence to back it up.

20yearrenovation · 19/09/2024 17:29

I run a business. I have to justify all my spending and account for everything. I don’t see why benefit claimants can’t follow this model of accountability.

And child benefit also? Thank goodness you have no bearing on how benefits are paid.

Yep, lets make people who are already is dire circumstances feel even shitter about themselves.

It is reprehensible.

Frustrating. DH has heart failure( double by pass at Christmas) and reduced heart function. He cant walk very far before getting breathless and having to stop. He also has diabetic neuropathy and foot ulcers.
Was refused PiP.
We have appealed. They didnt contact any of his medical team at all for information!!

Did you not send evidence?

Once the government do that for every penny of tax they take individually maybe and not just a well £300 went to “benefits” exactly what.

Daltonbear1 · 19/09/2024 17:32

20yearrenovation · 19/09/2024 17:15

PIP needs to change to a non cash benefit.

UC also needs to change to be a mostly non cash benefit.

No need for cash in this day and age.

All benefits should be able to be audited and spending traceable.

All tax payers should be able to see how their contributions are being spent.

What the fuck are you on about so how do people buy food or pay their bills with bloody beans

20yearrenovation · 19/09/2024 17:33

All benefits need to be accounted for. Not curtailed necessarily just accounted for.

I have to account for my business spending and my tax why should benefit claimants not have to account for themselves and their spending.

A benefit debit card?

A benefit bank transfer?

The whole system needs changing.

I have a business bank account. Everything is accounted for.

Benefit claimants could have a benefit bank account and debit card and account for everything too.

spuddy4 · 19/09/2024 17:35

I don't understand why people don't believe that there are people out there who scam the benefits system. I know a few in my area, no one says anything because snitches get stitches and all that but it's very common. There's families who on paper don't live together, lots of exaggerated illnesses, cash in hand working etc. Just because the majority of MN don't see this behaviour it doesn't mean it's not happening.

On the subject of PIP, I've heard that since covid it's easier to claim because there's no face to face assessments and it's easier to speak to your GP over the phone or econsult and your symptoms are not checked as much. I don't know how much of that is true but I do know that more people seem to be getting the higher rate now, these people are unwell so probably would qualify but not at the higher rate. There's a reason why benefits are being looked at, the welfare bill keeps increasing year on year so that can only mean more people claiming.

Intheoldendays · 19/09/2024 17:29

Yep. Why not just pay everyone in vouchers? Benefit claimants, employees.

Or is it only disabled people who should be stigmatised and dehumanised? Maybe we could send them to camps instead of allowing them to live amongst us.

I take it you reported her then to dwp? Also about carers they means test you as I got means tested did you ask for a financial form I pay towards my care I get carers 6 and half a week and I get pip I still have to put 70 a week or so to it because they don’t cover all the money which is what I sue my pip towards that’s what it’s there for you should appeal and report her

So what’s the difference between money in bank account and a card and how do I pay carers with that or my other bills

PandoraSox · 19/09/2024 17:37

All tax payers should be able to see how their contributions are being spent

So should all public servants be paid in vouchers, so we can see how our tax contributions are spent?

Much as MN loves to defend Labour/Starmer and insist that all benefit claimants are 100% genuine, there are far too many of us who know people manipulating the system for it to be uncommon

Absolutely this. I used to work in what is now the DWP, and I'm close to a fair few people who still work there. One of whom works in Fraud and Error.

The amount of fraud cases currently being investigated is staggering, totalling well over £1 billion since Covid. Fraud prevention has been so under-resourced for so long, it's crazy. A couple of years ago, the government panicked and started recruiting in to Fraud investigations, but it's never going to be enough.

The government is understandably reluctant to admit to letting taxpayer cash (money that should those truly in need) be abused in this way, so figures given to the public are only on those they've bothered to bring to justice. In the same way NHS stats are often censored and manipulated- but we can generally see through that.

I'm always shocked that people can be so naive. The result of blindly defaulting to 'benefits claimants never do anything wrong' is that money is haemorrhaging out to people who do not need it, and away from those who do.

I suspect I wouldn't be believed if I gave some examples on here of the things I saw when working as a Work Coach. There's none as blind as those who will not see.

A tad emotional.

Nobody wants anyone to be stigmatised, just to ensure that the public purse is not defrauded.

We are all being asked to contribute to a fairer society, so it’s reasonable to ensure there is no abuse of the system.

It’s the right thing to do.

Ok smarty pants no difference between money in a bank and vouchers really when you think about it as we still have our bills etc to pay and it’s cheaper to put money in bank then vouchers

It is accountable.

It would stop huge sums of cash being debited and spent or sent abroad. Stopping cash on hand jobs too.

Why do you need cash anyway?

I pay all by bills and employees via bank transfer.

I am not talking about vouchers I am talking about accountability.

OhmygodDont · 19/09/2024 17:41

I know people who have been reported. But again how do you disprove how bad their anxiety and pain are?

When the women sits their sobbing that she cannot leave the house without a chaperone to the assessor and when she does go to the gp takes a grandchild with her. Like a child is really a proper chaperone.

Not when she goes Toby or bingo tho. Can do that alone 🤷🏻‍♀️

sure the women in question has issues, Breathing, would be helped with some weight loss and quitting the fags and microwave meals.

Her anxiety is not what she says and nor is her pain from the boxes of unused painkillers stacking up.

And how exactly do you propose these benefits are paid then? How will people pay their bills? Mortgages? Childcare? Food shopping? Leisure activities? Because people on benefits are allowed to have extra left over and are allowed to spend it however they like without having to justify it to anybody.
