to think that putting explosives in devices such as pagers and walkie talkies can lead to indiscriminate injuries and killings

Let's get the first thing out of the way - it's not right to fire missiles and rockets at people - as that can cause indiscriminate injuries as well.

Putting explosives in devices such as pagers and walkie talkies - it sounds clever. Just send a signal and an explosion goes off potentially injuring and killing your opponent who has it. It will also disrupt communication methods.

But once you put the explosive in it, you lose control of where it goes and when it gets blown up. It could be a child has it. It could be on a plane - and might not be picked up by security.

You don't know where it ends up. Which means that it has the potential for unintended consequences.

What about any that didn't go off? Are there objects that have been booby trapped and are just potentially waiting to explode - and who knows where they are? The thing about booby traps is that you just don't know who will set them off.

Booby traps seem to be against the International Humanitarian Law if they can injure civillians.

This is Gideon Levy of the Israeli newspaper Haaretz talking about it on Channel 4 news about 8:20 minutes in.
He mentions this attack was effectively terrorism. He also thinks that spectacular etc though it was, it does nothing to help achieve security for Israel.

He made some very good points. And he was very clear that Israel want another war, and yet what do they expect to achieve?

Looks like Israel are going to invade Lebanon so there will be plenty more indiscriminate killing!

Newbutoldfather · 19/09/2024 18:42

@TeatimeForTheSoul ,

Hamas are terrorists, not legal combatants, so that is a false equivalence.

But, if Israel were to have a hot war with Iran, and the Iranians managed to plant a similar booby trap on IDF kit, I would view it as a legitimate tactic.

Genocide is a war crime
Bombing refugee camps is a war crime
Bombing schools, churches, universities, hospitals and generally destroy an entire infrastructure are war crimes
The Israeli government are committing crimes so there are no legal combatents in this, on either side,

Depravity …. Oct 7 rape, massacre of children, elderly, pets … all non-military
was more depraved
Everyday treatment of women in many country …. More depraved

itsmabeline · 19/09/2024 23:57

@HelenHen no other country will sink to such depths of depravity.

Even if we only look at wars going on right now, mass rape is a current tool of war, a little bit more depraved than targeted attacks on individuals.

Chemical warfare, nuclear warfare, remember Hiroshima and Nagasaki? A little worse on the depravity scale I'd say.

Newbutoldfather · 18/09/2024 18:45

Hezbollah are a terrorist organisation and the pagers were specifically for their use.

This, unlike a lot of what is going on in Gaza, was actually a brilliant calculated strike on terrorists.

The ratio of civilian deaths to combatant deaths was incredibly low.

This was a military coup and many will be looking up to Mossad for achieving it.

I hate a great deal of what Israel have done since October but I have to be honest, I'm inclined to agree with you on this. The small number of innocent victims was awful but all were put in harm's way by their own loved ones - the terrorists.

If anything I felt slightly awestruck by how cunning and efficiently executed the whole thing was. This in itself horrifies me. I suppose in a horrible way it feels almost a relief that it was such a surgical strike compared to killing tens of thousands of innocent civilians in Palestine.

itsmabeline · 20/09/2024 01:13

if a non-ally foreign country, say Russia or China, bombed us? And then said we aren’t trying to start a war with you, we are just bombing where we think terrorists are. Would the U.K. find that a-ok?

@ToBeDetermined

We'd declare war.

Yep the slaughter will continue, where next after they've destroyed Lebanon I wonder?

Newbutoldfather · 20/09/2024 08:42

@MissyB1 ,

Do you really think Israel can invade Lebanon? You do know that the the U.S and allies couldn’t invade and hold Iraq or Afghanistan, and that Russia is struggling to invade the Donbas having lost 70,000 lives.

Israel can, at best, invade a buffer zone to prevent Hezbollah lobbing missiles into Israel and allow their citizens to safely return to their homes. And that area is already, de facto, under Iranian occupation.

As to where next. Well, anywhere that decides to attack them, same as any other country in the world. But Israel is already stretched desperately thin and Iran is scenting blood in the water.

If you think Israel is such a threat, why do you think other Arab nations helped to shoot down missiles fired by Iran on Israel? Might it just be because Iran is actually feared as the regional aggressor?

Gogosmarty · 20/09/2024 10:42

BellaBionda · 19/09/2024 12:53

Israel is blocking emergency aid to Gaza
Children are starving to death
Is this also part of their "defense"?

They aren't defending anything, they're exacting bloody revenge for the embarrassment caused to their national security, on a people who many Israelis considered bare human. Which is why you have a situation where Israelis were protesting their soldiers right to rape Palestinian prisoners, when the authorities has the gall to try to arrest their IDF soldiers who raped a Palestinian prisoner so badly he was left unable to walk.

Why do the woman-hating, West hating, militant/terrorist, using children/sick as human shield, non-democracy regimes get so much western support?

Personally, any news from these news sources have about zero credibility.

Its like the school bully telling you that it was your kid who started the fight ...

Gogosmarty · 18/09/2024 18:33

It's called terrorism, and it's the whole point... of course they're going to kill indiscriminately and given that the Israelis have now massacred around 40k Palestinians I don't think they give a damn.

I do wonder what they're playing at though, just wanting to start a war with neighbours now and crack on? Or trying to show the world how clever they are?
TBH most of the international community are more concerned about their nuclear arsenal than this party trick of theirs with tiny amounts of explosive

So how do you describe the thousands (literally) of rockets fired by Hezbollah terrorists into civilian areas of Israel in the last year?

You can’t get much more targeted than this last Israeli move, but of course that’s still not good enough for those who resent any Israeli cleverness and support Hezbollah's aim to eliminate the state of Israel.

You think highly specific targeting of terrorists is somehow a "depth of depravity" worse than rape and deliberate close-up murder and abduction of civilians including babies, children and the elderly? Weird.

OneTC · 20/09/2024 13:57

I describe the actions of Hezbollah and hamas as terrorism and that's kind of to be expected from terrorists.

I describe the release of thousands of covert bombs into a civilian population as terrorism as well, albeit performed by a legitimate military.

Mass rape is a weapon of war and has been for centuries.
Chemical warfare, nuclear warfare, remember Hiroshima and Nagasaki?
Both war crimes. That is why the Geneva convention was created, to stop these happening.
A little worse on the depravity scale I'd say.
Where can I find this mythical depravity scale? It is starting to bug me.
