If you would miss a bath in a house?

FishersGate · 18/09/2024 18:25

We are redoing our downstairs bathroom currently has a standing separate shower cubicle and a small _not full size adult bath. It's not a big bathroom, we have a shower room upstairs.

I was thinking of removing the bath and putting in a larger walk in shower. We don't use the bath and environmentally i think the shower is better but conscious if we sell the house it would put people off there being no bath.

I bought a house where the bathroom had been turned into an oversized shower room. We needed a bath for the little ones, so we put one in. It was my dream house, so we bought it anyway—the missing bath was the only thing we didn’t like about the house.

There's no way the size of our bathroom would ever cost 10k to redo

Have you seen the prices lately? Our downstairs loo cost that to redo.

GasPanic · 19/09/2024 11:08

I mean, you are going to get two types of homeowners.

One that wants a bath and one that doesn't.

And probably two types of buyers, one that can see past the fact that a house doesn't have a bath and is willing to put one in if they want one.

And one that can't.

I would not rip out a bath if I had one, but if I did I would try to make it so it was easy to reconfigure and make sure any prospective buyers knew that.

I think most people aspire to live in houses where space is not so compromised that they have to choose whether to have or have not. So ripping a bath out of a house where the house clearly has room for it, or is to be marketed as a "luxury house" is probably not a great idea.

Our downstairs loo cost £1500 to redo last year. Either your plumber saw you coming or you’ve got solid gold taps.

When we moved into our house it only had showers, no bath at all so one of the first things we did was have a bath installed in the main bathroom. Prior to moving here I would always opt to bath rather than shower hence feeling it was totally necessary and DC always bathed rather than showered too.

Once it was installed we just didn’t use it and all showered… No idea why, it just became a thing and has stuck ever since. I have a bath once in a blue moon, same for DH.

StolenChanel · 19/09/2024 11:14

It would put me off as a buyer. I mostly shower too but the thought of not being able to have a nice bubble bath when I fancy it would be off-putting. I know I could put one back in but I’m a lazy buyer; I would want somewhere ready to move into.

Taps definitely aren’t solid gold, but did cost £900.

Lived in our current house for 5 years and have used the bath once. I'd much rather have a nice sized walk-in shower than a bath of any kind. I could only see myself wanting a bath if we had small kids, which we don't.

HamptonPlace · 19/09/2024 11:41

For me- no bath, no purchase. Albeit i don't use ours THAT often, i want the option... reading in the bath.. what joy!

RaraRachael · 19/09/2024 11:55

We had out bath taken out and a double size shower put in. Neither of us had had a bath for years so didn't miss it at all.

I'd much rather nip in for a quick shower that loll about in a bath for ages.

OrwellianTimes · 19/09/2024 11:56

Yes, id only buy a house without a bath if I was absolutely in love with it and there was clear space to put one in.

catcheeks · 19/09/2024 11:56

I would not buy a home that didn’t have a bath.

mamatoTails · 19/09/2024 12:00

We have 2 shower rooms; and a main bathroom with a bath. The bath is coming out soon for a large walk in shower.
Mum of 5, youngest is 7 and no one takes a bath anymore.
We've just moved in and don't plan to move again so are doing what works for us.
It wouldn't put me off when buying a house, but everyone is different.

toastofthetown · 18/09/2024 18:28

Are you thinking of selling the house? Lack of bath would put me off, but if you have no imminent plans to move then plan the space how it works best for you to live in and figure out selling if and when you do it.

Agree with this.
If you're really thinking of selling soon, then I'd leave it in. If your family is planning to be there years, then do what's best for you. X

FishersGate · 19/09/2024 12:29

Thanks for all the comments something to mull over. Its definitely not big enough for a large luxury bath but will look into the deep ones. We may move but not the next 3 to 4 years. I wouldn't ever buy a house missing a shower, if I could put one in. And we have had quotes to redo our bathroom and it's nowhere near £5k let alone 10k.

It really is a small room tight for space.

I would want at least one bathroom with a bath (shower over) and another with a walk in showerdecent shower.

What does put me off is the lack of a bidet!

I can't understand people who have two bathrooms and they make both into shower rooms, surely the best way is to keep one as a bathroom.

localnotail · 19/09/2024 12:56

I cant imagine not having a bath.

Gogosmarty · 19/09/2024 12:56

No I hate baths but DP and the kids still use the bath and I wouldn't buy a house with no bath if i had kid... imagine trying to wash a toddler in a shower!

Gogosmarty · 19/09/2024 12:58

My ddad compromised and had a small one put in and a larger shower - he never uses the bath but was aware that it would knock 1,000s off the price of his house to not have one.

Button28384738 · 19/09/2024 13:06

I think it would put people off if you wanted to sell - people with young children and people who just love baths (DH wouldn't buy a house without a bath he loves them!)

CoffeandTiaMaria · 19/09/2024 13:10

Clementine22 · 18/09/2024 18:31

I wouldn’t remove the bath if you do want to sell it in future, agree it’s easier for people with kids to bathe and I personally love a bath.

I completely agree; I wouldn’t buy a house without a bath.

Commonsense22 · 19/09/2024 13:13

They're just really useful with small children. Wouldn't miss it at all otherwise.

VesperLind · 19/09/2024 13:24

Aligirlbear · 18/09/2024 18:33

Did this when we moved into our new place, both bathrooms had a bath and separate cubicle shower. Ripped them out and put in large walk in showers with dual shower heads in both bathrooms. Fantastic to use and never missed our baths. Even visitors love our showers and never ask about a bath !

Same here. Two bathrooms, both with big walk-in showers and both with plenty of space for a tub if wanted. The en-suite is big enough for a separate bath and shower if wanted.

I had no bath when my youngest was a toddler, and it really isn't that difficult. She mostly showered with me.

Fiftyfiveandcounting · 19/09/2024 14:10

I feel like I would but the reality is that I have used the bath in our house twice in over 20 years for myself. If I had young children again it would be a requirement but as an all adult household, no I don’t think a bath is a necessity we all shower from preference.
