If you would miss a bath in a house?

We are redoing our downstairs bathroom currently has a standing separate shower cubicle and a small _not full size adult bath. It's not a big bathroom, we have a shower room upstairs.

I was thinking of removing the bath and putting in a larger walk in shower. We don't use the bath and environmentally i think the shower is better but conscious if we sell the house it would put people off there being no bath.

I don’t just have a bath in my house, I have a deep soaking tub. It was broken for a bit and my mental health actually suffered while I waited on the repairs that were delayed by Covid. I would not buy a house where I could not have a bath.

Row23 · 18/09/2024 18:41

We viewed a house we liked but decided not to put an offer in as it didn’t have a bath - the bathroom was fairly newly renovated so we wouldn’t even want to put one in ourselves and ruin a basically new bathroom set. But the lack of bath put us off the whole house.
However, if the bathroom was really small, I think it makes more sense to have a nice shower rather than squeezing in a bath that an adult couldn’t comfortably fit in.

Putting a bath back in isn’t particularly hard or expensive, we had a holiday home that had two walk in showers, we changed on to a bath with shower, it was about £420 in total and that included the taps and tap fed shower.

5foot5 · 18/09/2024 18:44

I would miss a bath. I very rarely use it for myself but I find it handy for cleaning my trombone. I don't think a shower would really cut the mustard there.

museumum · 18/09/2024 18:44

Bath was an essential when our children were small. But then again I’d not want it to be downstairs unless that’s where the bedrooms are?
Is it a “young family” house and area? If not then it wouldn’t be a decider for me (I like having a bathtub but rarely use it)

ErrolTheDragon · 18/09/2024 18:46

We'd never buy a house without a bath. Don't like it when a hotel 'bathroom' turns out to only have a shower. We've got a shower room with a walk in shower as well which DD prefers (when she's home) and it's nice for a quick freshen up after exercise.

If you've got room (slightly unclear ) have a shower and a bath not 2 showers.

GalileoHumpkins · 18/09/2024 18:47

We haven't had a house with a bath for years, neither of us miss it. I actually hate soaking in a bath.

Is that a euphoniumanism?

HighHeelsOnCobblestones · 18/09/2024 18:54

We have one bathroom and last year had it all redone with a big walk in shower and no bath. We love it.

Ha ha, that's brilliant! I love it!
But, no, it isn't. I genuinely do bathe my trombone regularly. It's good to keep the inside of all those tubes clean. It also helps to keep the slide slippy.

CautiousLurker · 18/09/2024 18:58

Just finished refitting our house and debated this for the last family bathroom - rest are now en suites. Kids are 16 and 19 and we’d not used the old bath in more than 10 years. I hate baths (sitting in tepid dirty water), so we got rid.

If we ever sell, and if an Estate Agent reckoned it was an issue (the ones we checked with said it wasn’t), it would cost a grand to swap out one of the showers with a bath, so we kept a few sqm of tiles just in case. If you have no use for a bath, don’t have one.

catgirl1976 · 18/09/2024 18:59

I have a bath every night. I couldn’t cope without one.

WhatToDooooooooo · 18/09/2024 19:02

Baths are so useful not just for bathing (especially small children) but for any kind of soaking, washing of big things, etc. For instance, I regularly soak stained clothes in the bath, soak my orchids, soak awkward things like pushchair fabric and tents, lanolise or wash woollens... the list goes on! I lived in a flat with no bath for several years and even as a single, childless person really missed it. Having the bath was certainly a selling point for the house I'm now in.

StripeyDeckchair · 18/09/2024 19:02

I'm house hunting atm & much prefer houses with good sized walk in showers.
I will take out any bath and replace with a shower so I'd do whatever suits you - a subsequent owner can always change it if it doesn't suit them

EMary12345 · 18/09/2024 19:05

When our children were under 8 yes it was a definite necessity! As they grew older and transitioned to showers less so I guess but I do like the occasional wallow so I would definitely pick a house with a bath if I had a choice, but if it were my favourite house then I guess it wouldn't put me off!

CrochetMadRosie · 18/09/2024 19:07

I think it possibly depends on how long you plan on staying there.

We have no intention of moving so took out the bath in our main bathroom a year ago and have a big walk in shower now as no-one in our house had baths. I love it- it feels really luxurious and makes the bathroom feel so much bigger.

At the end of the day, do what's right for you. My parents had a bath put in next to their shower and they never use it. It's just a dust trap!

FeebasAquarium · 18/09/2024 19:09

We have just ripped ours out (it’s currently sat in the front garden with the rest of the debris) have lived here for three years and have not used the bath once. There was a separate shower cubicle as well as a shower in the en-suite.

The washing machine is going to live in the bathroom instead because I felt the extra space in the kitchen would be more useful.

MargaretThursday · 18/09/2024 19:09

I would desperately miss a bath.

A hot deep bath in the evening is the way I unwind, relax, warm up when cold etc. I wouldn't buy a house without a bath.
But not everyone's the same, so it depends on your family. Of my dc, two prefer showers and almost never have a bath. The other one normally has a shower but loves a bath from time to time.
So see what everyone thinks.

Yes.

I only use it in the winter but coming home from a cold/wet walk and getting into a bath on a Sunday afternoon is worth it. Nobody needs an XL shower.

Nobody needs a bath.

It's all about preference and saleability.

mynameiscalypso · 18/09/2024 19:11

Depends if you're selling soon or not. If I saw a house I liked without a bath, I'd be taking at least £10k, if not more, what I'd offer because I would need to re-do the bathroom.

AgainstRegulations · 18/09/2024 19:11

I detest baths so no and I’ve never had any trouble selling my bath free homes.

Beautifulweeds · 18/09/2024 19:11

Love a hot bubbly soak so I wouldn't want to get rid of our bath. I did however live fine in student houses with just a shower. X

Glimber · 18/09/2024 19:13

I think the environment argument has been challenged these days. A power shower can use more water than a bath. It depends how disciplined your teens you are with limiting shower time I guess, and how good your water pressure or shower pump is.

I like a bath because we've had enough injuries that had to be either kept dry or soaked, rugs to scrub, crusty towels to soak, etc over the years. Not often, but enough that I'd prefer to keep a bath, even if it's a small one. I absolutely loved our bath when I was pregnant too - though hopefully no one in our house is going to do that again anytime soon.

Evenstar · 18/09/2024 19:14

A bath is really essential for me as I have chronic pain and warm water gives me some relief on bad days.

I would definitely not have considered a house without a bath when I had small children.

LouH5 · 18/09/2024 19:14

Unless you plan to move very soon/are only doing it up to get it ready to sell on, then I would absolutely do what works for you. It’s your house and you want to enjoy it, and have it the way you like it.
I personally love having a bath in the winter to warm me up when it’s cold out, and if I was looking to buy a house I would hope for a bath. However if I found my dream home and it didn’t have a bath in it, id just change up the bathroom and get one, once id moved in.
