If you would miss a bath in a house?

We are redoing our downstairs bathroom currently has a standing separate shower cubicle and a small _not full size adult bath. It's not a big bathroom, we have a shower room upstairs.

I was thinking of removing the bath and putting in a larger walk in shower. We don't use the bath and environmentally i think the shower is better but conscious if we sell the house it would put people off there being no bath.

I love my bath - wouldn’t buy a house without one 😀

Biggirlnow · 18/09/2024 19:53

In my 20s I never used the bath and considering ditching it. I was advised against it and I kept it as it was never a Forever Home.

I use the bath ALL the time now with kids. I could live without it but much prefer having it.

No plans to sell? Rip out.
Planning to sell? Keep.

addictedtotheflats · 18/09/2024 19:54

I would prefer no bath, we rarely bath and I have 2 children age 5 and 1. As long as there was a pull down shower head in addition to the large fixed one.

Hotsweatymumsspagetti · 18/09/2024 19:55

Depends when you might sell the house. In the next 3-5 years I would keep a bath. We didn’t buy a house as it didn’t have a bath and another similar one did.

But if you are staying 10 years plus do what you want and sod everyone else’s

LoobyDoop2 · 18/09/2024 19:55

We took ours out because we never have baths, so what’s the point of sacrificing a nice big shower cubicle for something you won’t use? I wouldn’t worry about resale issues, I think over the next few years more people will become more aware of the energy saving benefits of showers and will stop caring about baths.

Sandywoes · 18/09/2024 19:58

We bought a bungalow with a wet room (the previous owner was elderly). No bath, just a shower. We've now lived here over 6 years and I miss having a bath SO MUCH. The bathroom renovation has always just been pushed back because it's functional but I think all my problems would be solved if I had a bath. But then, I'm a bath person - some people aren't.

I think the lack of a bath probably influenced the purchase price so maybe one to consider carefully if you're thinking of selling.

StrongAutumn · 18/09/2024 19:59

I wouldn't buy a house without a bath unless I had the finances and the space to put one in.

I'd rather have a shower over a full-size bath than a small bath and a seperate shower cubicle.

IMustDoMoreExercise · 18/09/2024 20:00

Yes because I wash my hair over the bath.

FishersGate · 18/09/2024 20:00

Thank you all. Our dc are 8 and 12 never ever use the bath. I haven't used a bath for 9 years and I have a chronic illness. As an adult you can't lay in it properly it's a mini bath. We would have movable shower heads but may well move in next 4 to 5 years. Never use to soak anythings

It would put me off as my kids like baths. But even if they didn't, it would put me off as it would potentially put off any future buyer.

Unless you're going to stay long enough that it'll need another redo when you move, I'd keep the bath.

MrsGhastlyCrumb · 18/09/2024 20:05

I absolutely would. However I wouldn't mind one of these deep baths if space was limited. www.omnitub.co.uk/collections/square-baths

NB might not be fun to clean, though!

Loonaandalf · 18/09/2024 20:07

We bought last year and are starting a family so a bath is something I would have thought about in viewings but it was not a deal breaker. I think walk in showers are a bit more wow than baths.

MrsClatterbuck · 18/09/2024 20:09

When we put in a new bathroom we removed the bath and used the space to put in a sink set into a granite worktop the length of the room. We're able to put in a bigger shower.
We put a cupboard under the sink and used the other space under the worktop for the laundry basket plus a curved set of drawers for storage. When we put in a ensuite upstairs we just put in a shower. I did wonder if this would be a problem if we came to sell the house but when we did eventually sell it was not a problem and actually ended up in a bidding war.

Avertmyeyes · 18/09/2024 20:11

Keep bath.
Families, people with children, want a bath.

It will be a deal breaker.

Rocksaltrita · 18/09/2024 20:11

No, never had a bath in this house and lived here for just over three years. Didn’t ever have a bath in former house. Had two baths in the house before that when shower broke. Don’t like baths at all!

MuchTooTired · 18/09/2024 20:12

It’s been 14.5 months since I had a bath 😭

The house we bought had a stupid walk in shower thingy, I miss my bath so much! Yes, I can put a bath in but the money and the upheaval puts me off, so I silently seethe as I shower and vow regularly to get a bath in asap.

Put in a bath, especially if you’ve easily got space for one.

twentysevendresses · 18/09/2024 20:15

Not actually had a bath in (probably) over 10 years (when my mum was still alive and I was staying there, as she didn't have a shower).

Hate them...makes me dizzy and I'm never quite sure what I'm supposed to do when lying there!

So no...I'd not miss it 👌🏻

This is my thought too. Especially as a normal adult can't even lay really in the bath we have plus trying to source the size is a nightmare. We have a separate shower cubicle and there is a silly gap between end of the bath and cubicle. Just seems a waste of space can't reconfigure easily and I don't want a step in bath shower for mobility issues

Definitely.
Health reasons and others, bath is a non negotiable.
😁

ILikeToBeQuiet · 18/09/2024 20:23

If somebody offered me a free home and said that the only catch was that i could never put a bath in, i wouldnt take it. I love my baths every night.

blueshoes · 18/09/2024 20:25

Was previously a landlord in another country where showers are common. The prospective tenants are expat professionals from various countries. The agent told me that the Brits will want a bath.

TheNoodlesIncident · 18/09/2024 20:28

If you're planning to sell within a decade I'd probably put in a better bath to be honest. Look at the number of posters who wouldn't even view a property without a bath!

I don't like them myself and ours rarely gets utilised as a bath; DH probably has one with Radox in about once a year and that's it. I'd really only be retaining it for him, otherwise I'd take it out and have a roomy walk in shower instead. Ours has the shower above the bath, so I have to take big careful steps in (I'm short with bad knees). However I do want to do a loft conversion with shower room in, so I could have my big shower in there...

We're not leaving our house anytime soon so not planning around its saleability.

No it won’t. There is space so if they desperately wanted it they could put one in themselves. OP doesn’t want one.

BondStreet · 18/09/2024 20:31

We have a substantial stand-alone bath which I just adore. Nothing better than a hot bath with oils and scents especially during the colder months.

crostini · 18/09/2024 20:31

I wouldn't buy a house without a bath.
Because I love having a bath.
But also most families of young children would be put off too.
