Just wondering how much skinny people eat in a day and if I am over eating?

I'm a size 10 and not once in my life have I had 2 boiled eggs for dinner - I'd be bloody starving😂I do occasionally have 2 boiled eggs as a snack during the day though.

I'm baffled by the fact I'm a size 10 and weigh about 11st yet there are people saying they are a size 10 and weight 7-8st!!! I know I'm slightly taller than average (5ft7") but how does that work?! Not doubting them at all but it's so strange how your weight can vary so much in one dress size!

Because of bones.

My hips/shoulders at 7 stone and 5 foot 8 where a size 12 but my waist was a 6 you could clearly see all my bones etc... You have to dress for your widest point and bones do not change no matter how fat or skinny you are.

Being big boned is literally a thing (but has nothing to do with how much 'fat' you have). Look at how people can be wildly different hat sizes (hats often range from xs to 4xl) but people carry very little fat on their skull.

On a good day..

Breakfast is poached egg on sourdough with avocado and prosciutto ham. Coffee with collagen.

Coffee when I get to work, maybe with protein powder in it.

Lunch either homemade soup or a protein bagel, maybe some carrot sticks and houmous.

Snack is something proteiny like plain chicken or beef jerky.

Dinner something like spaghetti bolognese.

Drinks is usually one can of coke zero and water, wine if I have the calories.

On a bad day...

It all goes out of the window. Nothing gets weighed, I cut off chunks of cheese to eat, drink too much wine or have a bacon sandwich for lunch.

It's been a bad couple of weeks, I don't know if I've gained, I don't dare check. I'm hoping the insane amount of running I'm doing at the minute makes up for it and will tackle the overeating when I've done my half marathon race and the running can calm down and I can pick the gym back up too for weights.

For me it's not easy to stay the size I am because I have a tendency to be all or nothing.

Might that be because your eating is very restricted, which leads to a blowout?

I am aware that I have some risk factors for poor bone health. I had a bone scan about 10 years ago due to repeated stress fractures. They advised having another one when I reached menopause. I went to the GP at this point and she looked at my history/factors and didn't think my risk was high enough to warrant a further scan.

I haven't had a symptom free menopause, but they are manageable w/o HRT at the moment. I am keeping my mind open though.

Please do push for one now. It’s such a sneaky disease and you lose more density in the first 5-10 years after meno than at any time.

It’s so harmful of these GPs not to check. What happens if your GP is wrong? Definitely been known to happen. They are always trying to save money which I understand but still.

1 in 2 women will have an osteoporotic fracture.

They should really be monitoring everyone.

Then they put you in bisphosphonates which is also very wrong. So much can be done through diet and exercise.

DeCaray · 19/09/2024 09:25

I am slim and active. Occasionally slightly underweight as I'm late 50s and weight drops off as you get older.

I eat whatever I want but in small portions. Sometimes just a couple of bites of something I fancy just to get the taste.

I eat healthy foods, never drink alcohol and only have one main meal a day. I always eat breakfast and if I have a hearty breakfast I have a light lunch and supper rather than an evening meal.

I don't eat late in the evening and I'm very active every day.

I have a Complan or other milkshake when I'm trying to put weight on.

I'm a vegetarian.

My failure in dietary habits is a love of fizzy drinks although I do buy sugar free but of course they are very unhealthy.

I don't drink tea or coffee although I will have an iced coffee occasionally.

FourChimneys · 19/09/2024 09:26

I am naturally a size 14 or 16 but prefer to be an 8.

I have found the best way is to only eat on 4 or 5 days a week. I don't have the time or inclination to faff about with diets.

It works for me, it might not work for everyone.

This is true. I’ve got very thin bones and looked thin all my life. I could put on a stone and people barely notice.

I have osteoporosis now on my 50s so there are downsides to a thin frame!

rubeexcube · 19/09/2024 09:32

I’m 56kg, 5 foot 6 and think I’m probably the skinniest I’ve been. Basically it’s taken me 40 years to figure out that if I don’t eat breakfast I’m skinny (size 8/10), if I do I’m curvier (12) - not saying a 12 is in any way big btw.

A pp said they do intermittent fasting which I guess is what I’ve accidentally ended up doing (don’t eat until midday and don’t eat after 8pm as I’m in bed). I go to the gym including weights.

You were 7 stone? That's a BMI of less than 15. I hope you are a healthier weight now. I don't really understand what you're saying about big bones.

I eat about 2100 calories a day on average. 5 foot 7 and size 8-10.
I have to eat this much as I do an extreme sport and run ultra marathons

What’s your extreme sport… just being nosy. I climb so like to keep my weight low

Mrsttcno1 · 19/09/2024 10:20

So interesting to see others diets! I’m back to a my usual size 8 now, 5 months postpartum so my body does look a bit different, but comfortably back in all my size 8 clothes.

Typical for me is:

Breakfast: Chicken sausage bagel thin/bacon bagel thin/porridge/toast

Mid morning snack: Fruit and a yoghurt

Lunch: Chicken & rice/tuna pasta/shredded chicken wrap/wrap pizza, all would be with veg/salad to bulk the meal up

Afternoon snacks: Spready cheese & crackers/crisps/biscuit/more fruit

Dinner: Lasagne/Chilli/Spag bol/Steak & potatoes/Curry, again all with veg/salad

Then if still hungry I’ll have an ice cream or something after!

It looks like a lot of food written down but I’ve always eaten like this and been size 8 for as long as I remember really. I would say I do have quite high activity levels though, I run, go to the gym, and have a big dog so even on a non-gym/running day I cover 6/7 miles walking with dog & pram.

2100 cals doesn't seem that much for someone doing a great deal of sport.

Sartre · 19/09/2024 11:08

I’m a size 10 and 5 ft 7.

I eat the same breakfast pretty much every day which is Greek yoghurt with muesli and berries and a teaspoon of honey. It’s the 10% real greek yoghurt, not low fat pretend stuff.

Lunch varies day to day but on a work day is usually just a meal deal so a falafel and hummus wrap with fruit or a little Tony’s chocolonely bar sometimes.

Dinner also varies, sometimes a full medium pizza to myself! Most of the time some sort of veggie pasta, curry or risotto dish.

Always have dessert and it’s always cake or chocolate and sometimes will snack on an oat bar, fruit or crisps.

I run at least 3x a week and one run is at least 10km and I try to lift weights at least twice a week and do a HIIT at least twice. Walk 30 mins each way from train station to work and always take the stairs.

I'm not really sure how else to put it without repeating myself but Ill try another way.

Someone might be 4 foot 9 and someone else 6 foot 5... thats due to their bones. Just as your bones effect your height they can effect your width too.

These two things things do not have to correlate, you can have someone short with wide bone frame or tall with slim bones frame.

OK - I always thought when people said they had big bones they meant they were bigger and heavier than...I don't know...the standard, and that was why they were heavier.

I understand what frame means. Bones are generally about the same density. BMI takes into account different frame sizes.

I think it is reasonable for the PP to wonder about how 2 people of the same height and similar size (clothing and to look at) can vary in weight so much. I think it's down to muscle and fat rather than heavier/lighter bones. Skeletal mass does vary of course, but not to the tune of 3 stone.

goestheweasel · 19/09/2024 11:46

Whole foods, try to avoid UPF. Lots of oats, seeds, nuts, fruits, veg and drink lots of water, try to keep most of my fueling at mealtimes, whole foods are more filling to avoid snacking.

But I also eat alllll the carbs, lots of bread, rice and pasta, I also have one sweet treat a day but try to make sure it's something homemade in the week, then allow myself chocolate and wine on the weekend.

lissom · 19/09/2024 13:07

I'm 5 foot 7 and weigh 60 kg, a classic size 10. I'm late 40s. Weighed 50 kg in my 20s but in those days had no muscles. Quite a bit of HIIT, running, gym (weights and elliptical), most days. I noticed that weight settling on my upper body more these days. I have muesli for breakfast, a big balanced lunch, big balanced dinner, and a small mid afternoon sandwich. Actually quite a lot of food, but I am very active besides the sport. I try to stay off sugar but I bloody love it. so try to stick to 2-3 desserts or choc bars per week. Try to eat between 9 am and 8 pm. Try never to have late night snacks. Also I feel like HRT has helped a lot. Completely gave up alcohol 2 years ago and highly recommend.

lissom · 19/09/2024 13:08

just as an aside, I do eat very little UPF but loads of carbs like the previous poster.

Yes and no, it's never restricted too much because I would never cope but to lose weight and even maintain I have to eat less than I would like so when I fall off I fall off hard.

HowAmITheCatsGranny · 21/09/2024 09:06

The bones thing has to have something in it.. me and my mum are both the same height and weight. I’m a size 8 on the top, 10 on the bottom (I carry my weight on my tummy a bit), she’s a size 12, maybe a 14 on top. I’m 40’s, she’s 70’s. But I remember the same thing in my teens.. she was always bigger even if we were a similar weight. (It actually gave me some level of body dysmorphia, because I had a picture in my head of what eg 8 stone looked like which really didn’t match my body..)

Happii · 21/09/2024 09:08

It's irrelevant really as everyone is different, generally though there are very few people who are size 10 and below but eat wildly over and above their BMR calories a day.

ByDreamyMintNewt · 21/09/2024 09:22

Size 10, 5ft9, about 10 and a half stone - I had a baby not long ago, but I'd say my standard weight is around 10 stone. I was up to about 12 and a bit stone in pregnancy but back in size 10 clothes after a couple of weeks (breastfeeding seems to help weight fall off me) and I've been the same general size since around 18. Short answer is I eat whatever I fancy - it's all genetics for me, most of my mum's family are the same build of tall and slim. When I was a teen I was teased for being skinny and lanky but I'm now grateful. Periods of stress I tend to lose my appetite and also lose weight very quickly then.

Standard day:
Breakfast - cup of tea with sugar. Honey nut cornflakes or marmite on toast for breakfast. Sometimes both if I have the time and I'm feeling indulgent.

Lunch - when I'm at work I'll have a hot lunch, maybe lasagne or similar. At home then maybe soup with bread, or a sandwich, or the occasional ready meal. Usually have a bag of crisps after.

Dinner - hot dinner, pasta, curry, etc. Home made food though. Take away a couple of times a month.
Might have snacks in evening, like crisps or chocolate.

Small bowl…small portion…huge salad…no breakfast…tap water for 16 hours…small handful of…a single square…teaspoon of…

There’s definitely a script to these threads.

Then you're not reading the same thread as me 🤷🏼‍♀️. While my usual diet is who, food plant based - this week I've been out for a 3 course meal, lots of cheese, fish and roast potatoes were consumed. Last night I went to a BBQ where I ate copious amounts of nibbles, pizza and at least three different cakes as people brought food to share. This will not cause me to suddenly go up from an 8/10 because my usual diet is healthy, I eat well with generous amounts of food, including lots of nuts, seeds, oils. I never think about calories these days.

Sammie233 · 21/09/2024 17:33

Breakfast - either nothing (yes I’m bad and it’s not intentional ) or cup of tea with a few biscuits

Lunch- weekday a packed lunch - sandwich, fruit, crisps and a chocolate

Dinner- eg meatballs & spagetti, chicken & rice

today I’ve had

Small costa Mocha

Steak fajitas

Packet of crisps

for dinner I’ll have another steak fajita

I also drink a lot of water and tend not to eat after 6/7pm
