Just wondering how much skinny people eat in a day and if I am over eating?

OP posts:
midgetastic · 18/09/2024 17:26

I suspect a lot of it comes down to how you feel about it - do you feel you eat loads ( perhaps because of how you were brought up , not necessarily genetics )

Amiokay · 18/09/2024 17:27

I’m a size 8 and 5ft 8 and I usually have 0% Greek yoghurt, berries and a small sprinkling of low sugar muesli (off set by a decent amount of honey though!) for breakfast or protein shake and a choc chip brioche roll if I’m in a rush, lunch usually soup, a 3 egg omelette or a smaller portion of leftovers from the night before. Dinners really vary but usually fish/meat with a carb and loads of veg/salad. I don’t really snack but do love wine/cocktails over the weekend and will eat out at least once a week. My PT basically told me I should eat 1800-2300 cals a day but make sure I get enough protein in (1g for each lb of body weight) but I’m probably not hitting that at the moment.

northernballer · 18/09/2024 17:27

2 slices of granary toast with butter
Massive ham roll
2 chocolate biscuits
Bag of mini cheddar
Pie and mash for tea

I also went for a 5 mile run and do some kind of exercise every day, not to stay slim but because I enjoy it. I expect that is what keeps the weight off tbh.

SilverPiscis · 18/09/2024 17:28

I used to be a size 8-10, years ago I used to eat A LOT.
I eat much less these days and I am a size 12, so it is not just what you eat. It is metabolism, hormones...I've never been into exercising, so no changes in that

Rehoming123 · 18/09/2024 17:29

I’m a size 10, 165cm, 5 months postpartum with my 3rd, breastfeeding and have bad PCOS.
Today is a typical day for me and I’ve had:
7am - 2 coffees with oat milk
12pm - 4 mini sausage rolls
2pm - 1 coffee with oat milk
7.30pm - I will have homemade chili con carne with rice

I find it very hard to lose weight and a few things I think that help:

  • I don’t drink alcohol at all and haven’t for the last 4 years
  • I exercise 6 times a week (3 strength training at the gym, 3 runs) - I love this and it gives me headspace I really need
  • I really try not to snack at all (which is hard when I spend all day making snacks for my kids 😂)
  • I only eat chocolate 2 or 3 times a week and manage what i eat. This is really hard for me because I have a huge sweet tooth
When I write these things out it does actually seem quite extreme what I have to do to keep myself at a size I want to be!
Isthisit22 · 18/09/2024 17:32

Totally depends.
Today I’ve had Greek yoghurt with berries, then white bread sandwiches and I’m now eating fish fingers, chips etc. as lots of meetings and just eating what the kids are having for dinner.
But yesterday I had the same breakfast, bean curry, then jacket potato for dinner.
I eat chocolate/ cake everyday.
I also exercise twice a week and have fairly small portions.
I just know how much I can eat and stay the same size. I’ve been a size 8 / 10 my whole life. 45 yrs old now

TheWalkingEyebag · 18/09/2024 17:32

Size 8 and 5’4. Honestly, I think a lot of it for me is genetic.

Breakfast: chai latte and buttery bagel or peanut butter on toast.

Lunch: soup and bread, fried 2 egg sandwich, or mozzarella and tomato panini.

Dinner: whatever the meal prep kit gives us. Often pasta.

Snacks: I’m not the biggest snacker unless pregnant, but I’m a sucker for a bag of crisps!

SilverPiscis · 18/09/2024 17:36

My point is, there will be size 10 people starving themselves and people who eat like crazy. Yes, people can eat like crazy and be slim, I know that by experience (unfortunatly, I have lost that super power). That you eat the same as a size 10 does not mean you will get the same results as we are all different, you need to find yourself

Lemonadeand · 18/09/2024 17:41

I think I must just be lucky and maybe my metabolism will catch up with me one day!

Breakfast: fruit and fibre cereal, juice
Mid morning snack: cereal bar or apple
Lunch: cheese on toast or egg on toast or soup on toast with a big tomato or apple yoghurt
Evening snack: crisps or chocolate usually
Dinner: spagbol, or chilli, or fish pie, or chicken casserole etc

Drinks: far too many cups of tea, water, squash. Rarely drink alcohol.

Notimeforaname · 18/09/2024 17:44

I only eat between 5/6pm and midnight.

I'll have a dinner like lentil and chickpea stew or eggs, avocado and veggie sausages or a frozen pizza when I'm home from work.

A couple hours later I'll have some beans on toast or a toastie. Then I have some yogurt and fruit/peanut butter.

Then a cup of tea and some biscuits or chocolate before bed.

I'm very short and small. I only need 1400ish calories a day

toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 · 18/09/2024 17:54

I'm 46, 5foot 4, 54kg, size 8.

Aim to eat healthy 80 percent of the time, have one takeaway a week. But sometimes life gets in the way! Have had a bag of mini cheddars today, on a bad day I could eat 4 bags in a row!

During the week when I'm on it and focussed:-
B- Greek yogurt full fat, nuts and seeds, honey, chopped fruit
Snacks - fruit or nuts
L - salad with cous cous, beans, lots of spinach and kale, and lots of other chopped veg.
T - varied depending on time but this week it's been chicken sausages with roast veg, home made tuna pasta bake and a homemade chicken curry and brown rice so far. Rest of the weeks teas will be eggs and tinned tomatoes on toast and on Friday jacket potato with cheese and beans.

I don't need to exercise to stay my usual weight but I do to be toned. I do 2 hours brisk walking or cycling on a weekend, 4 x 30 min hits and 4 x 50mins yoga most weeks.

I have suffered with mild acne all my adult life, a healthy diet has a hit of an impact on that. I definitely also feel a bit better when eating healthily. More level without peaks and troughs, more focus and drive.

Have 2 daughters and a husband who almost died twice last year. Both these things have made me really think about my health a lot and so I put a lot of effort in.

toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 · 18/09/2024 17:54

I would say portion sizes for me are a bit above average, I'm just one of those lucky people.

Whippetlovely · 18/09/2024 17:59

Everyone has different metabolisms so it's a bit pointless people listing what they eat. I eat a lot of ' junk' but I run three times a week. Some people need to be strict with what they eat to stay a size 10. Most people would love to be a size 10 after having kids and not having to exercise you are very lucky. Try not to fixate about it we all have diff body shapes especially after having kids. My child has an ED it gives a totally different perspective on eating and calorie counting (don't do it!) You will be feeling more confident once you can excersize again x

CasaBianca · 18/09/2024 18:04

There is an element of personal metabolism and also what your body is used to.

I’m a size 6, less than 50kgs (8 st?) for 5’4. In terms of calories I think I must have the same as you or more but my diet is a bit odd. I eat whatever I want, which is:

  • No breakfast. I am not hungry in the morning, since childhood, so not a weight loss technique but you say I’m doing intermittent fasting.
  • Light lunch: homemade sandwich, ready meal, ready made salad, frozen dim sums, sushi, pastry etc
  • Late dinner (8-9pm) but large quantities and lots of calories. 3 large servings of lasagna for ex, or a whole XL pizza. The meal is not always unhealthy but always a very big portion, and always followed by biscuits, candy, crisps etc. I could easily eat a full size bag of crisps + a bar of chocolate or a pack of cookies, after the meal that is.

I rarely drink and never exercise. So either the intermittent fasting is the key or my body is just used to getting the same amount of calories at the same time every day and just lives on that. I eat what I fancy so never obsess about ‘forbidden food’ so as I result I don’t have the cravings I experienced when I tried diets.

When I’m on holiday I will follow a more traditional diet, with large breakfast, and average lunch/dinner + drink wine, but no snacking. I always gain weight on holiday! My point being: your body is maintaining its weight probably because it found a balance. If you don’t need to loose weight for health purposes you can decide if you want to eat less or stay the same weight, but personally I wouldn’t want to eat less than what you listed.

kindertoPTS · 18/09/2024 18:05

I'm 5'9 and a size 8/10. I eat 2-3 meals a day but mostly vegan. I do think that makes it easier not to over indulge. I don't drink alcohol either. Plus I burn roughly 500 calories a day exercising. And being tall means I get a lot more calories to burn than someone who is 5'. I'm never hungry though. And do graze if I'm at home during the day (nuts and rice cakes usually)

Neurodiversitydoctor · 18/09/2024 18:06

5ft 5 58Kg size 8-10.
Breakfast - fruit ( usually satsuma and banna) black coffee
Lunch- left overs or salad (couscous/ rice or similar) soup in the winter more fruit
Snack- some sort of nut bar/ small amount of chocolate/ small slice of cake
Dinner- nearly always HM, stir fry, chilli, spag bol decent portion but no seconds.
We have soup for dinner once a week in the winter.

TheHateIsNotGood · 18/09/2024 18:08

I eat when I'm hungry or soon after and not because it's a set time to eat. The exception being if my workplace dictates a certain time then I'll eat what I feel like from what is available.

Probably 50% healthy/ 50% just for the calories so sometimes what's quick and often involving eggs or cheese or tuna and sometimes involving all 3.

Nothanks17 · 18/09/2024 18:12

I eat three big meals, recipes off line, nothing expertly healthy like some comments you get. Just ones with good mix of protein veg and carb.

I do have magnums and crisps etc too.

Examples of meals - daal with chappatis, roast dinners, thai curry, italian dishes, curry, quasedillas, goulash, jackets with beans and salads.

I eat all vegan, lots of protein from tofu, lentils and pulses, mushrooms, nuts

Probs not as helpful. Everything is mostly homemade. When we eat frozen food when shattered, I find I am still hungry even though the plate was fuller, as though my body neeeeeeeds more. Don't eat late at night unless its down to no choice (been out or had so many errands), always have breakfast first thing in the morning to get my body going. Drink water. Eat in a routine.

Cooking from recipes gives me trust in the portion sizes. I do however eat the same size portion as my other half who is 6 ft 1.

Everyones bodies are different and metabolism, way of life which contributes to what we eat.

hairybrush · 18/09/2024 18:21

Porridge made with soya milk ( 4 tablespoons of oats to make it) with some fruit ( banana or apple and/ raisins or prunes) and pumpkin seeds or Brazil nuts.

Might have a mid morn snack, such as a biscuit or oatcake or two with tahini and a bit of chic.

lunch is my main meal, rice or pasta with a veg and bean dish.

Evening meal is cereal with fruit and seeds or scrambled eggs and toast with grapes or something. Maybe a pud such as some ice cream or eclairs

BurbageBrook · 18/09/2024 18:21

I'm a generous size 8 or small size 10 but I'm 5'7 and I think if you're tall you can get away with eating a bit more. Anyway today I had two slices of peanut butter and banana on toast for breakfast, generous on the peanut butter, snack of dark chocolate and raisins, anchovies and tomatoes on toast for lunch (yes I eat too much toast), a few sweets (just as we have a box right now), two cappuccinos, steak and sweet potato oven chips and veg for dinner, a few raspberries. I would guess I probably eat 2000 calories a day or a little over.

AliceS1994 · 18/09/2024 18:22

Today I've eaten loads- unwell with two under two and starving

Coffee
Porridge
Two slices of bread
Cream of tomato soup
Quiche Lorraine
2 slices toast
Spag bol for dinner
Probably a large glass of wine this evening

On a usual day
No breakfast just coffee
Sandwich and crisps for lunch
Anything for dinner, 90% made from scratch

I've always been a size 10 since a teenager but I can tell you my body is absolutely not the same even if I weight more or less the same!

BurbageBrook · 18/09/2024 18:23

I should add I almost always have some form of UPF treat every day. Usually a chocolate bar!

LadyKenya · 18/09/2024 18:24

ExquisiteEmelda · 18/09/2024 17:00

Well reading some of these meals I’m glad I’m not a size 10. I’m sorry but 2 boiled eggs for dinner? And a slice of bread if you’re really hungry? And the poster who goes without food some days and only has 800 kcals a day? Crazy.

Nobody is asking you to eat like that. If you are happy with yourself, why would you care, or need to pass comment on their food choices.

OooohAhhhh · 18/09/2024 18:25

I eat whatever I want. My figure is in the genes in the family. I take after my mother. I eat a good range of foods that are both good and bad for you. Bad food like donuts crisps cakes, you name it and I eat it.
I'm normally a size 10 but can often fit into size 6-8 clothes as well depending on material and fit.
Never needed to diet or watch what I'm eating in my life, straight after babies were born I was more or less back to my original weight, it just fell off me and I didn't have to try.
I weigh 58kg and 5'6.
Some say I'm lucky, but I wish I was curvier.
So it's not just food intake, genes and metabolism play a part as well. I must have a fast metabolism.

oObyeOo · 18/09/2024 18:27

I’m size 8/10. 5’4. Weigh 58kg and aged 40.

I think the age is important as up until only about 5yrs ago I could eat whatever I wanted, whenever!

I deffo can’t do that now! So I intermittently fast.

Typical day:
Salad at 12:30 with eggs and cheese.
Dinner at 17:30ish Prawn salad with Noodles.

I’m trying to drop to 56kg atm.
