Just wondering how much skinny people eat in a day and if I am over eating?

OP posts:
YesHesAPlonker · 18/09/2024 21:15

5'8" size 8/10 9St 8lb. I intermittent fast as well. Don't usually eat until 12ish and make sure I finish before 8pm - though today I was finished at 7pm and not hungry after that.

Lunch I had a few slices of Jamie O's High protein bread with hummus, a few tomatoes and salad, followed by blackberry ice cream. Snacked on some kale crisps and salted crispy chick peas early afternoon. Evening I had a spicy lentil & veg stew with butter bean mash, more blackberry ice cream (finishing off a tub) and some vanilla yoghurt ice cream. I normally eat a whole food, plant based, diet - so the ice creams are healthy and home made.

Off out for a meal tomorrow with friends and will happily be indulgent and eat things I don't cook at home, I'm eying up a seafood starter and seared tuna main with tiramisu to finish, we are not starting until 7;30 so definitely won't worry about fasting!

A combination of Intermittent fasting and doing the Zoe programme has completely transformed the way I eat. I went down two clothes sizes, never even think about calories these days, don't get hungry much, but when I do I just eat something healthy. I've been stable at this weight now for over a year with no effort on my part, I eat what I want - but what I want to eat has changed.

NeedToChangeName · 18/09/2024 21:31

Toast, peanut butter and banana

Seabass, potatoes and vegetables

Green bean curry and naan bread

Sassysia · 18/09/2024 21:42

Used to be a size 10 and ate and drank what I wanted. Reached 35 and started to put on weight over the last few years - now a 12-14 and actually try and watch what I eat. I blame hormones!

Cherrytreat · 18/09/2024 21:43

My BMI is about 22. A couple of years ago when I was obese (35 BMI). I have gotten into a routine with eating. I fast between 1pm and 9pm or thereabouts, not too strict with it.

Salad or meat/fish and veg or salad for lunch, no carbs.

Full fat greek yog, chopped fruit /berries and nuts for an after work snack.

Dinner is meat or fish and veg, chilli, stew, curry 80% homemade. Again keep carbs to a minimum as id rather fill up on veg.

Make my own low sugar muffins and granola for snacks. Have a sweet tooth and like a scoop of ice cream regularly or a slice of cake, enjoy a couple of squares of dark choc and peanut m&m's. I don't feel deprived.

I do track on nutracheck every day and weigh myself once a week to keep an eye. Also strength train 5 x a week.
Also don't drink alcohol now, I used to drink daily, I think quitting changed my health and life.

It sounds hard work when I read it back, but I'm 100% happier and healthier than 2yrs ago when I ate and drank what I wanted and didn't exercise.

Phlegminem · 18/09/2024 21:44

Some days I eat like a horse, others I eat very little. I'm very disordered with my eating so not the best to go by.

Today I had 2 cheese and bacon turnovers for breakfast and just not I've eaten 2 cheese twists from Tesco.

Shit diet. I may be on the slimmer side but not healthier than the majority of those heavier than me by any stretch of the imagination!

Sevenwondersofthewoo · 18/09/2024 21:48

You can put your daily food into Cronometer app and it will track protein carbs and fats plus all the vitamins. It’s free! Definitely helped me see how get the right macros and make sure I was having enough protein and nutrients every day.

Mabs49 · 18/09/2024 23:23

Also Op you need to ask about AGE.

When I hit mid 40s I got a middle ring of fat that just appeared overnight, thank you peri.

im still BMI 19 and thin but its where the fat goes that is so annoying.

Some of these posters may be early 40s and 30s.

I could eat all the biscuits and bread and crisps in those days,

not anymore!! I used to eat 6 choc digestives for a morning snack when I was breastfeeding,

Age really makes a difference. You have to go high veg, fruit. seeds, nuts. oily fish, high protein low carb when you reach a certain age or your menopause symptoms are going to be off the charts on the old carb low nutrients diet.

now I’m exercising more regularly and getting toned middle ring is going… unfortunately there’s no escape!

I'm 54 next week and just past menopause. I haven't changed my diet or time exercising. I have changed the sort of exercise I do, but that is more because of my joints and needing to do more strength work (to help with the joints) and not because of any outward body or weight changes. I used to road run all the time, but I mix it up more now. Also the social and well being side of exercise has become more important as I've got older.
I've been the same weight all my adult like (give or take).
I never did eat loads of junk food 'just because I could' when I was younger so maybe that has helped.

I'm 70 next birthday.

Lost weight, including all my middle fat in the last two yrs due to intermittent fasting and joining the Zoe programme. Now eat a mainly whole food, plant based, diet. Never worry about calories, never hungry, eat very filling and delicious food.

5'8" size 8/10

Yes age is relevant- but it's not a barrier to achieving a healthy weight and body fat distribution.

If you’ve exercised your whole life and eaten well no doubt you’ll have helped things.

However in the osteoporosis group I’m in there’s a surprising amount of runners who develop this disease and it only shows up later in their 50s and 60s. It’s always a great shock to them because they’ve taken care of themselves their whole life.

No symptoms is great for menopause, but IMHO there’s still work to do for diet and going into later age to ensure the least inflammation possible.

Same for exercise in that cardio needs to change to include resistance training and weights to maintain bone mineral density.

I’ve done the Zoe program too. It’s great.

my BMI is 19. My middle ring is non-existent to most people. I’ve always been thin.

but it was partly why I did Zoe. However Zoe wasn’t perfect for me. I struggle with anaemia and need to eat red meat and organ meat for iron and b12, I can’t seem to absorb non heme iron as well as heme sources. My ferritin dropped. Similarly my thyroid didn’t do so well on Zoe diet.

It’s very individual and genes account for a lot which aren’t accounted for on the Zoe program, especially if you have something like the mother mutation which I’m pretty sure I do.

I still use a lot of Zoe but I’ve tweaked it. This is more what my diet looks like with higher amount of meat and fish than recommended on Zoe.

i also pulses too but they aren’t in the vast quantities Zoe recommends and I eat lots of dairy and eggs too.

Six women reverse aged themselves by up to 11 years with healthy diet

Researchers at the University of Virginia found that simple diet, exercise and sleep tweaks can reverse someone's biological age. The study involved six women.

Greek yogurt with nuts and seeds for breakfast.

banana & homemade oat bar for snack.

Toast with cream cheese. 5 dates & teaspoon of nut butter for lunch or cheese (small amount) sandwich with packet of crisps.

lentil & veg lasagne/ lentil & veg curry/Quorn cottage pie
Qvarg or some chocolate.

I eat approx 1750 calories a day. I track on MFP.

work out your TDEe & reduce by 20% for a weight loss calorie target.

See that’s very similar to me, except I don’t eat a pudding every day or snack other than fruit sometimes… and I’m a size 14-16 🤷‍♀️.

Which is why just asking what skinny people eat is pretty pointless.

lobsterkiller · 19/09/2024 08:10

I'm between a size 8 - 10. I avoid carbs and im veggie with little to zero alcohol. I don't count calories and avoid fake meats, sounds boring and restrictive but for me it isn't. I went through adult life on a diet of junk and this is the best I've looked and felt in years. I have a crap food day every so often but due to the above my taste buds have changed and it doesn't taste great these days. I cook with either butter or olive oil. I took it slow when making changes as I wanted them to be permanent and I refuse to weigh myself. I still eat cake and biscuits but they're not part of my daily diet. I piled on the weight in my 40s, I'm 53 and a lot more comfortable with how I look now.

Indeed. If we learn anything from these threads is that every single person is different. But we don't and they pop up regularly.

I am aware that I have some risk factors for poor bone health. I had a bone scan about 10 years ago due to repeated stress fractures. They advised having another one when I reached menopause. I went to the GP at this point and she looked at my history/factors and didn't think my risk was high enough to warrant a further scan.

I haven't had a symptom free menopause, but they are manageable w/o HRT at the moment. I am keeping my mind open though.

Well reading some of these meals I’m glad I’m not a size 10. I’m sorry but 2 boiled eggs for dinner? And a slice of bread if you’re really hungry? And the poster who goes without food some days and only has 800 kcals a day? Crazy.

I'm a size 10 and not once in my life have I had 2 boiled eggs for dinner - I'd be bloody starving😂I do occasionally have 2 boiled eggs as a snack during the day though.

I'm baffled by the fact I'm a size 10 and weigh about 11st yet there are people saying they are a size 10 and weight 7-8st!!! I know I'm slightly taller than average (5ft7") but how does that work?! Not doubting them at all but it's so strange how your weight can vary so much in one dress size!

I eat loads more than that (and nowhere near as healthy) and I'm a size 10.

What I have gathered from these posts is that is surely must be down to metabolism mostly? No?

There’s definitely a script to these threads.

Why the derogatory term?
Would you post 'what do you eat in a day if you are fat?
We've had a thread on 'skinny-shaming' already

I don't find 'skinny' derogatory at all and have been called it my whole life.

My Nana was deeply offended by the word 'skinny' and thought it was the worst possible thing a woman could be called but she was also born 100 years ago in a different time where rationing was a huge issue in her youth and her mam died young from a disability that has wasting as a symptom so maybe that was linked to it.

She also hilariously found words like 'bloody' or 'hell' (together or separate) to be horrifically offensive swear words that should never be said. No one else I have met has ever had the same sensitivities (not even my other similar aged grandparents who grew up under strict Irish Catholicism).

Bananasplitz97 · 19/09/2024 09:05

I always find posts like this fascinating for the breadth of responses.

OP you cannot compare what you eat to another person. You don't know what the other person weighs, height, muscle mass or activity levels. All of these will impact how much food a person needs.

Also unless someone gives you portion size you have no idea how many calories they are consuming, especially with higher calorie food like nuts etc.

I think your diet sounds decent enough. I personally prefer to eat a higher protein diet as that is what works for me. I am short, size 8, fairly active and have a decent muscle mass. Judging by a lot of the posts I have read I eat a lot more (especially carbs!) than most people (at least on Mumsnet.)

Yep- so so many variables in metabolic rate, hormones, lifestyle, health etc.

I have been watching ‘outlast’ on Netflix recently- one of those daft survival programmes where they have to fend for themselves in Alaska for 2-3 months (basically living of tiny crabs and seaweed)

very interesting to see that some of them became skeletal, while others (45-55 year old men especially) were still clearly overweight at the end, and some of the slim women had barely seemed to change at all.
