Would a 17 year old girl like this or is it cringe?

Bought this for my niece's birthday because she loves animals but now am having second thoughts. She's quite a trendy girl, into goth clothes/makeup etc. Would she be seen dead carrying this? It's weekend bag-sized.

I like it, but then I’m a Very Old Bag who’s long past giving a monkey’s about what anyone else thinks.

Doggowo · 18/09/2024 13:56

I'm a 38yr old alternative woman and I think this is lovely

Our local garden centre sells these.
Very popular with the coach tourists. Think they take them to bingo. Haha

Zebracat · 18/09/2024 13:59

Just thought that I don’t know your budget. I have a Dd not much older and she loves this, and it’s cheap!

I think it’s risky as it’s quite marmite. You’re obviously a lovely aunt and have another go at choosing something.

RosaMoline · 18/09/2024 14:02

I am sure she would love this.
the downside? It’s £110.00.

Just be honest with her and say you took a punt. If she fancies it, it's her's, if not, you'll happily take it back and get her something she fancies.

I'd have loved that at that age. Gifts can be a real minefield. I'd have loved a relative to say "anything you want up to £50, I won't judge".

RedToothBrush · 18/09/2024 14:02

Its not Kitsche enough for a 17 year old.

what about something like this

Alwaystired94 · 18/09/2024 14:05

not for a 17 year old goth no.

Threetrees745 · 18/09/2024 14:11

OP it would probably help if you could point us in the direction of which type of goth or alt fashion she is into.

Are any pics below looking familiar?

@GLVF

Leopard/Animal print is the most unsophisticated and tacky print ever!

Absolutely hideous.

dutysuite · 18/09/2024 14:13

I have a 17 year old, this bag looks very childish. Money or vouchers.

cuckooooooo · 18/09/2024 14:15

Suitable for a 5 year old!

CombatLingerie · 18/09/2024 14:18

You are a very thoughtful Aunt for trying to buy something your niece will love, but I don’t think that bag is it. I am also intrigued as to why the bag is so shiny. Is it plastic? Look I have been there with teenagers and their birthdays. Give the gift that never offends them.Cash!

Maybe so, but Leopard print accessories are very on trend this Autumn so a trendy 17 year old may like it.

@BebbanburgIsMine Depends how you wear it! I don't think anyone would describe me as tacky, but I know you can't vouch for that, so we'll agree to disagree.
I'm not talking women-with-inflatable-lips-and-caterpillar-brows leopard print, I'm talking maybe a printed belt with tonal top, or a bag or kitten heels with everything else pared back.
A matter of opinion, perhaps, whether you (one) can achieve a classy look with it. I like to think I can.

gotmyknickersinatwist · 18/09/2024 14:32

I disagree that it's childish, alt teens may like the kitsch-in-a-deliberate-way aesthetic (I had a powerpuff girls backpack in my late teens/early twenties) but it's maybe on the cheapy bag shop side of things. I could see an alt-kitsch-fashiony type carrying this, but more likely a boy tbh, and not a goth.

Ohnobackagain · 18/09/2024 14:32

@StyleSiren I’d have wanted this at 17 and still would now

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 18/09/2024 14:32

For anyone much younger than me I ask them what they like, for teens definitely a good look or ask them or parents what they like. And money is a good option.

BePearlSheep · 18/09/2024 14:35

I think the problem with is that it’s a super specific design. Something more neutral could be better.

I like this one. It's not cartoonishly goth, like cat and moon prints are.

I agree.

Some 17yos would absolutely love this and some would hate it.

I don’t even buy my own DD clothes or accessories anymore because things that I think she’ll love, she hates and vice versa.
