Would a 17 year old girl like this or is it cringe?

Bought this for my niece's birthday because she loves animals but now am having second thoughts. She's quite a trendy girl, into goth clothes/makeup etc. Would she be seen dead carrying this? It's weekend bag-sized.

What's your elderly lady friend done to annoy you? Save her a trip to the charity shop and take it there yourself!

🤣

lololulu · 18/09/2024 12:38

The age is irrelevant. It depends on her tastes.

RandomUsernameHere · 18/09/2024 12:38

I'm no expert, but it looks basically the exact opposite of goth.

Button28384738 · 18/09/2024 12:39

My 13 yo wouldn't use this sorry OP

Pukeyproblem · 18/09/2024 12:40

Fable England do a nice mix of gothic/animal/botanical

Rummly · 18/09/2024 12:42

It’s great! It would go wonderfully with a tartan shopping trolley.

What’s not to like?

housethatbuiltme · 18/09/2024 12:43

It really depends... I'm part of the ALT scene and have some friends that would adore this and others that would think it was hideous.

I personally hate bright green so for me this wouldn't be great but some more colourful eccentric friends would probably like it.

MoralOrLegal · 18/09/2024 12:45

Sorry, it looks like a Magic Eye puzzle!

This - three different people who are apparently into the same style have already pooh-poohed the other's suggestion- and they are all likely to be over 17 so the op's niece may very well disagree with all of them!

Just give her some money and buy something small as a token ackowldgement of her interests - lots of either cheaper "obvious" goth skull candles and things in the shops atm or slightly more expensive/niche themed dark academia/fantasy ones on etsy which would likely fit with her aesthetic but also not be an issue if she didn't LOVE - she'll still use it for the smell.

This.

It what I do with 17 year old niece give voucher and token nod to interests.

My similar sounding once 17 year old loved her steam punk vibe biker/thigh/drop bag - the style that goes round waist and one leg and acts as a handbag essentially - but can't say I commonly see teens wearing such things.

Dahlietta · 18/09/2024 12:48

It looks like a Cath Kidston changing bag, which doesn’t really scream goth. The skinny little cheetahs are a bit spooky though.

Unless we're talking teenage fashion I think people are long past considering age appropriate styles. As long as they look good who cares.

Sartre · 18/09/2024 12:50

This is reminding me of the time my mum went on holiday when I was a 15 year old
goth and returned with a pink fake playboy hoodie for me as a gift…

That bag doesn’t exactly scream teenage goth OP, no.

Mummyoflittledragon · 18/09/2024 12:52

I see disturbia has already been mentioned. This is the accessories page. https://www.disturbia.co.uk/collections/womens-accessories-and-footwear

Meant to say, it would be a no for me for the bag you purchased.

TypingoftheDead · 18/09/2024 12:53

I really like the goth aesthetic, but my taste varies as well - I’m kind of on the fence about this bag! So, I’d still give it to her and see what her reaction is.

DillDanding · 18/09/2024 12:57

If she was an 80 year old, she just might like it. But, unlikely as it’s truly hideous.

StarCourt · 18/09/2024 12:58

My DD would love it but she's 15 autistic and gothy

BESTAUNTB · 18/09/2024 12:58

She would better appreciate the money, probably. Especially if driving lessons are needed or university is possible.

This bag might end up in landfill or the charity shop after a period of time which seems so wasteful.

EI12 · 18/09/2024 13:00

Nooooooooo!

LuckySantangelo35 · 18/09/2024 13:00

StyleSiren · 18/09/2024 11:45

Aw, rats!
I might give it to an elderly lady friend instead.

@StyleSiren

why would being older mean she would like it?

supportpangolin · 18/09/2024 13:01

I like the Disturbia bag and having looked at their website, I'd love the Fernery chiffon skirt (I am nearly 72):

@DillDanding

are you saying 80year olds like hideous things?
thats a bit ageist!

I think my mother would be insulted by this comment and actually she would hate it 😂
On reflection I can't see Joan Collins liking this either & she's 90. People can be so ageist thinking once you reach a certain stage of life you can forget about being trendy & fashionable, especially if you still look amazing.

Stresshead84x · 18/09/2024 13:03

Putting · 18/09/2024 11:59

They look a lot less tacky than the bag you posted in your OP, at least for a 17 year old goth.

I think the bag you suggest is either for people a lot younger or a lot older.

I think they look a bit like they're trying to hard to be goth - the bag the op picked isn't quite right either though- I think at that age a voucher would be better to pick her own. Although she might like it- I was quite quirky at that age and I'd have liked that.

RafaFan · 18/09/2024 13:05

My 8-year-old daughter would love it! Not sure about a 17-year-old though.

Hang on, my mum's nearly 80 and she wouldn't be seen dead with it! She was a hippy and a beatnik, old people are not the same as 20+ years ago.

I was going to suggest Disturbia and Fable OP, but I see they've already come up. Much nicer stuff. But I'm 43, what do I know... I was a 17 year old goth a very long time ago! Best go for a voucher I think.
