To think The Range has made a stupid decision

CDS Superstores has announced a major change to The Range stores' entry requirements. Dog owners will no longer need to leave their pets outside or at home as stores across the UK are now completely dog-friendly.“

What’s the point of this other than to make shopping in The Range a miserable experience? Am I the only one who thinks it’s disgusting to have filthy dogs running around soft furnishings and fragile displays, potentially pissing on things? I assume people with dog allergies are just irrelevant then. Navigating the shop is already a nightmare when it’s busy, who wants dogs who have been rolling around in God knows what to be taking up the aisles? Think it’ll be online orders only from now on… Hmm

Ha ha someone new to our village was asking if there are any dog friendly churches in the area

In my experience most (CofE) churches allow dogs these days

I quite like the Range - was in there last week with DD picking up stationery for going back to uni as they have so much more choice than anywhere else locally. Also have recently bought picture frames in there, and crockery sets/mugs again for student daughter.

What I would say though is that despite the stores being massive, they do like to pile the random tat in the aisles so that in order to get to the stationery at one end of the store you have to navigate past the weird crystal flashy pumpkins and the 6 foot fall chef Santa. There's barely room for humans to pass, never mind dogs.

Dogs do not need to go the The Range, or John Lewis, or any of the other places which are "dog friendly" to accommodate the feckless owners who can't train their precious furbabies to be left alone. Big shopping centre in Glasgow went "dog friendly" and had to reverse their policy after 4 months because these devoted pet-parents couldn't stop their animals shitting everywhere.

DogInATent · 17/09/2024 07:47

It's The Range, don't they all have a pet shop in-store? In which case they're competing with Pets At Home, and it's usually direct competition as the two stores are frequently fairly close by each other.

But I also wonder if the broader acceptance of dogs (which as a dog owner I'm not seeing a huge amount of in retail) is in part heading off the problem of "WTF do we do about all these emotional support animals?". They're popping up everywhere. They're not recognised assistance dogs in law, but the sort of people that have them tend to be a bit vegan-ish in making a very big deal about them.

I went to a big indoor craft fair this weekend where dogs were allowed in. One poor stall holder had a display of lovely scarves along the front of her stall, all selling at £29 each. One large dog cocked its leg up on them and managed to spray over 6 of them. The stall holder was furious and asked the dog owner to at least pay the wholesale cost price for them. The dog owner just laughed and walked away.
Despite complaints from most of the stall holders, the event organisers will not ban dogs.

That's awful! They should have payed the full £29 per scarf!!

@AngeloMysterioso

Plenty of dogs in churches, some cathedrals even have "canine vergers" to greet visitors. Don't have an issue with it myself. My ddog was the unofficial guard dog for my previous church (I worked there) as a key holder I attended the burglar alarm etc and I would take him too, came in handy as it was usually drug addicted homeless trying to get into the hall to sleep

Fuck me, is there anywhere dogs can’t go now? My town is overrun with them… dogs in the pub, dogs in the pharmacy, dogs in Fenwicks, I’m surprised people don’t take them to church…

They do!

I'm a dog owner. I love my dog, I like going places with my dog, never in a million years would I go shopping with my dog. My dog doesn't give a shiny shite about home furnishings, she isn't going to derive enjoyment from shopping and she isn't going to enhance the shopping experience.

I don't understand this relatively recent trend of people taking their dogs fucking everywhere. Unless it an appropriate place for a dog to be just leave them at home like a normal bloody person.

(Obviously service dogs are excepted).

Edited

Agree with this.

NeedingCoffee · 17/09/2024 07:55

As a lucky recipient of a service dog, it's also the case that other dogs in shops makes it harder for the service dog to work. Service dogs are trained to focus, but they're not robots, and being sniffed and jumped on by pet dogs "being friendly" isn't helpful.

IpsyUpsyDaisyDoos · 17/09/2024 06:31

I'd try my best to not let my dog pee on someone else's property, but genuine question here. What did you expect them to do?

Dogs just squat when they're ready to pee, and short of carrying a pissing dog off that spot, there's not much to be done. You can't drag them by their collar if they don't want to stop weeing. If you have a solution, please share it to help dog walkers out.

Solution: carry a couple of large bottles of water with you, to pour over the dog piss so to at least dilute the filth and foul stench.

You’re welcome.

mitogoshigg · 17/09/2024 07:55

@Ilama

You are missing out! The range has a huge range of things from useful household items (think the sort of things Woolworths sold, eg light bulbs, diy, gardening supplies, craft materials, toys) to decor ideal to brighten up homes (think first homes perhaps), furniture and fittings like mirrors, soft furnishings. Affordable things for normal people. The sheer snobbery is unbelievable if you haven't been. And they have an excellent pets section and their Christmas range is always great

Beth216 · 17/09/2024 07:57

It wouldn't be so bad having dogs in all these places if people trained their dogs to ensure they were well behaved and kept them on a close lead. Unfortunately an awful lot of people don't bother, just let their dogs do what ever they like and just laugh or ignore them when they're doing something they shouldn't.

We were in a coffee shop a while back with a dog that just barked and barked, the owners did nothing, who wants to listen to that while they're trying to relax with a coffee? We actually went there because we had a dog with us ourselves (so nothing against dogs) but we would only take a well behaved dog. If she had started barking or being a nuisance we'd have taken her out.

Balloonhearts · 17/09/2024 00:18

Meh. They're no more disgusting than toddlers so I really can't get too worked up tbh.

Toddlers wear nappies to keep their shit and piss contained. Perhaps shop dogs must have nappies to go inside ?

melonhead · 17/09/2024 07:59

As someone who is scared of dogs, I can guarantee I'll never go into a Range again. Just the thought that there might be a dog when I'm trying to buy something puts me right off.

Sugarysnacks · 17/09/2024 08:02

My friend has multiple severe allergies and has an epipen to use in emergencies. If we go for a walk we have a coffee stop in a local cafe we know and trust not to be dog friendly. She can’t travel on public transport because the risk is too high that earlier some inconsiderate idiot has allowed their dog to sit on the seats . It’s not an annoyance for her it’s a possible life threatening emergency as her allergies can trigger anaphylactic shock.

So now it looks like her life will be even more restricted if she has to check in advance which shops are dog friendly. She can’t risk being in a shop and having to pass in close proximity to a dog.

Toomanysquishmallows · 17/09/2024 08:02

@melonhead , I agree I have two children with autism , who are both scared of dogs .

TeamPolin · 17/09/2024 08:03

I'm a dog owner and I do not want to see dogs in shops unless they are service animals. People don't have a God given right to take their pets everywhere....

AngelinaFibres · 17/09/2024 08:03

We had dogs . Last one died 7 years ago. We never ,ever took them shopping or into cafes. We didn't take them to busy Farmers markets whilst on fully extended leads ( oh how I hate the person who invented that bloody thing). We didn't take them to the massively crowded Christmas lights switch on in our local town. All these things are apparently essential now so tbh I assumed you could already take your dog into the Range to rub its shitty arse on everything . We had breakfast in a lovely cafe on Sunday morning. Dogs accepted but 'paws on the floor please'. Woman came in with a small dog and immediately got out a scrappy looking cloth and put her dog on it on a chair. Ffs. The young waitress made a fuss of every dog that came in ( hands all over their faces) then carried on touching cups, plates etc for customers without washing her hands. Foul.

The amount of times I have found a dog poo on the floor in pets at home proves to me no other shops should allow dogs in

Ditto my local pet shop had dogs that piss and shit in there.

So many untrained dogs about.

Monkeybutt1 · 17/09/2024 08:04

There is a garden centre near me, it's more a posh food shop, restaurant and a small garden centre though and there has been outcry as they've recently changed the rules to no dogs allowed as the staff were fed up with picking dog shit off the floor. I don't blame them and would be more likely to go there now in support

tigger1001 · 17/09/2024 08:05

It's the dogs I feel for. Rather than having a good responsible owner who takes them to fun places for dogs - park/beach/wooods etc, they get dragged around shops. Hot, busy shops where they are stood on etc.

There are reasons why dogs (other than assistance dogs) shouldn't be in shops etc, and many of these reasons are for the dogs welfare

Take the dog for a good long, proper walk, then leave it at home while you wander around the shops.

ClaudineMallory · 17/09/2024 07:39

Put you off your lunch? Why on earth did you stay?

Of course we pointed it out and the staff removed it before we had our lunch. They seemed pretty shocked by it and couldn't recall seeing a dog there that day so no idea how long it had been there.

ThisOldThang · 17/09/2024 08:07

Once people start suing shops due to injuries caused by dogs, they'll soon ban them again.

🤣🤣
Potentially pissing on things
Runnumg around fragile things
Etc.
Yes, this can apply to both dogs, bulls and children

RedToothBrush · 17/09/2024 08:08

The dog just wants to pee.
Let them be.
Then their owner can get their goods for free.
That happiness is all The Range want to see.

You miserable people wanting to flee
From Aisle Three
All it is, is a steaming great lump of poopie
That happiness is all The Range want to see.

Can't you see Bessie's glee
Curtains and cushions are better than a tree.
All it is, is a bit of dog wee.
That happiness is all The Range want to see.
