Are you glad you voted Labour ?

Sir Keir is firmly in his new seat and appears to be making waves... winter fuel, VAT on private school fees, UEFA watchdog type scenario, budgets... increase in CGT, 20% increase for Jr doctors, immigration learnings from Italy to pay other countries to take Immigrants and that's only what I briefly followed.
So my question is - are you still glad you voted Labour, or that they are in Power if you didn't? And what if you are not happy anymore - why ?
I'm on the fence so trying to be objective ;-)

I voted Lib Dem to prevent the tories getting a seat here.

I was very pleased labour won. And still am.

Shakeoffyourchains · 16/09/2024 19:28

Are we just having this exact same thread once a week until opinions change?

As I've said on every other thread, I didn't vote for them but I'm glad they won.

Having a government who are able to project even a veneer of competence is a massive step up from what we previously had.

Zonder · 16/09/2024 19:29

I'm especially happy now there seems to be a resolution to the junior doctors' strike.

MovingTooFast121 · 16/09/2024 19:30

Yes. No one party was going to be the perfect solution. I feel safer now than I did in Tory hands.

Mrsdyna · 16/09/2024 19:24

You're on Mumsnet, of course they'll say yes. Posters have been banging on for years about how bad the Tories are, now they have to save face by pretending that Labour aren't just as bad, if not worse.

Worse than the Tories, don't make me laugh.
In answer to your question OP hell yes.

JWhipple · 16/09/2024 19:32

Ask again in 14 years when they've had chance to try and reverse the mess the Tories made by aggressively f**king up the country to make their mates richer.

Whyhaveibeencutoutofmamsnot · 16/09/2024 19:35

I am glad I voted labour and glad they won. This complete Tory shit show is going to take years to turn round.
I will not need winter fuel payment but we do need to get to those borderline pensioners who are struggling, glad junior doctors have got a pay rise.
Inheritance tax and CGT tax I am young enough to start planning now.
I hope labour will get us on better terms with Europe.

Allswellthatendswelll · 16/09/2024 19:36

I voted Lib dem tatically but yes I'm glad Labour are in.

They aren't perfect but they also have a pretty hostile right wing press.

I doubt Starmer will be super popular but I don't think people will think he's an absolute charleton like Johnson or Truss.

Good luck paying the bills when net contributors decide they’re not going to be financially abused.

The quote from Thatcher about running out of other people’s money is most apt.

Who are these net contributors? If it's the top earners then labour have said they're not raising income tax so they're safe.

I also don't recall there being a mass exodus of top earners in the 60s, 70s and 80s when they were paying up to 90% on their income, so not sure why you think they'd jump ship now.

If you're include those with passive/unearned income then that's a different story. Since 2013 the top 1% have increased their total wealth about threefold and now own c24% of all private wealth.

To put that into perspective: 650,000 people own enough wealth to theoretically clear the £2,000,000,000,000 of national debt and still have enough left over to pocket around £2m each.

Don't you think it's about time something was done to address this ever increasing inequality?

Top earners are safe? Have you been drinking heavily all day?

Are you OK? This isn't a usual response to an adult discussion.

Harvestfestivalknickers · 16/09/2024 19:48

I think it's been a very mediocre start, not particularly impressive.

It’s true though and that’s probably what bothers you.

If everyone did the best they could then the country would be booming. We are a million miles away from that though in part because many people have been made to feel they are victims of the system. This means they are more keen to see others dragged down and “punished” than they are to improve their own lot.

Catlover1705 · 16/09/2024 19:53

HanaLeigh · 16/09/2024 18:48

In what way?

Cutting winter fuel payments to pensioners who need it, freeing men to rape, 2 child benefit cap and VAT on school fees. This isn't a proper, caring Labour government.

Sorry, what's true? That I'm a professional victim?

If you had any substance to what you were saying then you wouldn't need to resort to personal attacks.

Alwaysanotherwine · 16/09/2024 19:58

labour always do this

over spend massively and then someone (torries) has to come in and realise the money has to be paid back

I've read it three times trying to find the bit where you demonstrated no personal pride.

TeamPolin · 16/09/2024 20:05

Yes. It was always going to get worse before it got better. The writing has been on the wall for a long time. But I do believe Labour are interested in trying to fix things.

You know the massive overspending was done by the Tories, not Labour, right? Facts and all that...

historiccastles · 16/09/2024 20:14

I didn't vote Labour and I don't regret that decision.

My daughter for one has said she'll never vote Labour because she has to change school and drop her favourite subject Latin, as no state schools do it. She's mid GCSE but she's on a bursary and I can't afford the increased fees even with that. She's autistic but because I was able to put her in private before we never got her an EHCP so none of the exemptions apply. She wanted to do Latin at university and in her eyes, her dreams are dashed. Nothing I say can get through to her and I'm genuinely worried for her. All so people like Keir can continue to send their children private because they can afford the hike.

It's all soundbites and bash the Tories but so far I can see nothing positive they are planning to do and they are already breaking election pledges.

Labour couldn't be trusted in the 70s or the 90s and clearly they can't be trusted now either.

Apparently they can be accused of wrongly taking money off pensioners and wrongly overspending by paying non-means-tested benefits to those who don't need it all at the same time. It's witchcraft.

pizzaHeart · 16/09/2024 20:19

Yes.
I wouldn’t bet my house on them being absolutely perfect all the time but remember it’s so difficult now because Tories left absolute mess. Maybe there were happy few who were ok under Tories but it wasn’t me so I’m glad Labour won.
