Are you glad you voted Labour ?

Sir Keir is firmly in his new seat and appears to be making waves... winter fuel, VAT on private school fees, UEFA watchdog type scenario, budgets... increase in CGT, 20% increase for Jr doctors, immigration learnings from Italy to pay other countries to take Immigrants and that's only what I briefly followed.
So my question is - are you still glad you voted Labour, or that they are in Power if you didn't? And what if you are not happy anymore - why ?
I'm on the fence so trying to be objective ;-)

I didn't vote Labour but I am glad that they won. I am still hopeful that they can/will reduce poverty in the UK and improve standard of living.btoo early to tell yet

nOasistickets · 16/09/2024 20:21

Christ another one of these thread to say how amazing Labour are?! 😂 something weird is happening. I didn’t vote for them, and I will never vote for them - but at the same time, I didn’t expect KS to be better, he’s a politician after all. Not super keen on the pensioners suffering with the winter fuel cuts - I think that’s pretty mean. Everything else - doesn’t affect me. It’s just a wait and see what they do really. It’ll be the middle that will lose the most….

There have been no announcements on disability benefits so far. What are you dreading?

Edited

The part were they say it's unsustainable, it's exactly what Tories from 14 years ago said before all the cuts and reassessments of benefits which cost more to implement then prevent so called fraud / help those back into work.

Then we have the energy crisis- Ed Miliband won't go down the nuclear option and wants to invest heavily in wind- which results in much higher energy bills, that disabled and vulnerable people can't afford. As well, as the congestion charges they want all around the uk- who do you think they will affect? The disabled, people who need cars.

Also the budget were fuel will go up, energy and I'm sure lots of other things.

When the Tories done it, everyone screamed we are a rich nation etc. Labour do it and it's about time.

Yes!!

Cutting winter fuel payments to pensioners who need it, freeing men to rape, 2 child benefit cap and VAT on school fees. This isn't a proper, caring Labour government.

Erm, the two child benefit cap and the early release/letting rapists out were Tory wheezes

And the triple lock means all pensioners are getting an increase which is more than the cut in winter fuel payments.

VAT on private school fees - absolutely, private schools are businesses offering a service. We can afford to subsidise them because the country is broke from Tory catastrophes.

I'm very happy with Labour. Not least because many many well worn phrases on here have been consigned to the Tory bin.

HRTQueen · 16/09/2024 20:24

Yes I am very pleased Labour are in power

I am very disappointed with the winter fuel allowance cuts

But I do not expect to agree with everything they do I do believe overall they shall improve the lives for the majority this is why I support Labour

and I am pleased the NHS is starting with reforms not just cash being thrown at a broken system

Sparklybanana · 16/09/2024 20:24

I didn't vote for them but am surprised at how ruthless they are being.

Arrivapercy · 16/09/2024 20:24

Yes. They've done all the things I expected. I'm ok with that and with what is probably to come.

Endiof · 16/09/2024 20:25

Hoping they get rid of the nasty ICE cars and gas boilers

Top earners are safe? Have you been drinking heavily all day?

Yes, from income tax rises anyway. Are you going to answer any of the questions I asked or are you just here in bad faith?

SpiderPlanter · 16/09/2024 20:28

Anyone know what’s going to happen with the utter joke that is HS2 now? Is it going to be panned before they destroy any more vital environmental spaces and historic plots? Or do we have to continue to pour millions into it?

Arrivapercy · 16/09/2024 20:29

The problem with the conservatives is the obsession with the size of the cake ~economy~.

They are there wondering why people are whinging:
"But the cake is growing. Look, its big enough to feee 100million people! What do you mean your crumb isn't enough to eat? You aren't happy that 1million people are eating 99% of the cake & have pieces too big to eat? Well you are going to give up less of your crumb in tax! That'll solve it".

A smaller cake ~economy~ but that we actually all get a decent sized piece of, its better for most of us. Even if we give up some of our slice in tax, we still get enough. If we only ever get a crumb its never enough.

Radiatorvalves · 16/09/2024 20:31

Voted libdem in a very safe Labour seat. Delighted Labour won. And fwiw I’m a higher tax rate payer and have kids at private school. Thank goodness the utter disaster of the last few years (particularly post 2015/16) is over. Not going to be an easy fix.

Shakeoffyourchains · 16/09/2024 20:33

Alwaysanotherwine · 16/09/2024 19:58

labour always do this

over spend massively and then someone (torries) has to come in and realise the money has to be paid back

Edited

Ah this old myth, unfortunately for you the stats don't back it up. Instead they show that since ww2, tory governments have, on average, borrowed and spent more and repaid less debt than labour governments did over the same period.

EasternStandard · 16/09/2024 20:33

I didn't vote for them and find the general public response on other outlets ie not mn interesting (and somewhat amusing)

Disabled people are exempt from the CC in London. I am pretty sure they would be elsewhere.

The Tories did awful things to disability benefits. We don't know yet what Labour will do, so I will judge them when announcements are made.

Tristar15 · 16/09/2024 20:38

Yes. Going to take years to sort out the Tories mess, they have to start somewhere and anyone who thought that magic money trees would appear as soon as a new government came in are ridiculous.

YogaForDummies · 16/09/2024 20:39

Frankly it's a relief to have people in who aren't flagrant criminals for a change

urbanbuddha · 16/09/2024 20:54

@historiccastles

You’re wrong. Latin is taught in a few state schools, but you’re right the likelihood is that your daughter won’t be at one of them if she switches to state.

Nil desperandum -

UhHuhHuH · 16/09/2024 21:01

Voted Lib Dem (always do) as its LD or Tory in my area. LibDem MP and v pleased Labour are in. Higher rate tax payer.

Do they have difficult decisions, hell yes. Will they do a much better job than the last lot, hell yes.

I don’t care about ‘personality’ and politics aside (!) didn’t have an issue with Rishi. Which is more than can be said for the 2 eeediots before him.

DameKatyDenisesClagnuts · 16/09/2024 21:06

Yes thanks

Zonder · 16/09/2024 21:08

historiccastles · 16/09/2024 20:14

I didn't vote Labour and I don't regret that decision.

My daughter for one has said she'll never vote Labour because she has to change school and drop her favourite subject Latin, as no state schools do it. She's mid GCSE but she's on a bursary and I can't afford the increased fees even with that. She's autistic but because I was able to put her in private before we never got her an EHCP so none of the exemptions apply. She wanted to do Latin at university and in her eyes, her dreams are dashed. Nothing I say can get through to her and I'm genuinely worried for her. All so people like Keir can continue to send their children private because they can afford the hike.

It's all soundbites and bash the Tories but so far I can see nothing positive they are planning to do and they are already breaking election pledges.

Labour couldn't be trusted in the 70s or the 90s and clearly they can't be trusted now either.

There's so much wrong here.

Going private wouldn't mean you can't get an EHCP.

She's mid GCSEs so presumably will have two terms left once the tax comes in. What a shame the school can't help you out for those two terms, given that they will benefit from the tax changes.

My DC did Latin in a state school. So did I but that was in the stone age so I won't count that.

Anyone saying Labour can't be trusted after 14 years of the Tories has an interesting world view.

Perplexed20 · 16/09/2024 21:14

You can do Latin and classics in a state school. My ds's school does it and it is (shock, horror) a comprehensive.
My son left last summer with A*AA.

UhHuhHuH · 16/09/2024 21:14

@historiccastles

Latin is offered as a language plus an extra curricular at my DC state school.

Also, notwithstanding whatever is going on with you, the impact of an entire government isn’t going to be measured in Latin provision and frankly that’s an idiotic suggestion.

All public services continue to be screwed but more state schools offer Latin = nonsense policy.
