Are you glad you voted Labour ?

Sir Keir is firmly in his new seat and appears to be making waves... winter fuel, VAT on private school fees, UEFA watchdog type scenario, budgets... increase in CGT, 20% increase for Jr doctors, immigration learnings from Italy to pay other countries to take Immigrants and that's only what I briefly followed.
So my question is - are you still glad you voted Labour, or that they are in Power if you didn't? And what if you are not happy anymore - why ?
I'm on the fence so trying to be objective ;-)

Yes, still happy I voted Labour and hope to see some more positive change by the end of the first 4 years.

Deliiciousllydifffident · 16/09/2024 18:32

I’m disappointed with them, as I thought they were the party who look after the vulnerable, sick, elderly and disabled. Instead, they are money grabbing to pay their own bills.

Noangelbuthavingfun · 16/09/2024 18:33

I'm very encouraged to see they are taking action and a stance on things early on that the Tories sat on for ages being complacent. That's typically though I guess what happens with any new government to show why they got in.
I guess I'm asking as they've done certain things that I would say is a bit anti Labour which is interesting. I definitely hope they have the balls to tax big companies that do business here but don't pay any tax due to loopholes and the Tories never had the balls to do it as they were probably bankrolled by these firms (instead of just taking individuals on any spectrum of the income grid)

I'm glad they got in. They seem to have their hearts in the right place, most of them. The Tories are a bunch of venial self-serving scum, and since it was a choice between them and Labour, then... Actually I voted Lib Dem because Labour are the third party round here.

Catlover1705 · 16/09/2024 18:34

Yes but regretting it as they seem to hate old people, women and children.

ExtraOnions · 16/09/2024 18:34

Yes … they have been in power for around 10 weeks, and have to mop-up 14 years of Tory incompetence. They have to make some hard decisions, and good of them in doing so, instead of bowing down when The Daily Mail is unhappy. It was Populism that got us into this mess.

WhatMothersDo22 · 16/09/2024 18:35

Yes. They are making the tough decisions, which are not always going to be popular, but country was left in a mess and we have to start somewhere. Much better than embarrassing circus of the past 14 years! Main thing I notice is domestic politics is not in the news as much - which I think is a good thing after the relentless scandals we had with Tories. Not saying Labour are perfect, but I would say it is a huge improvement.

Couple of questions from me to you @Noangelbuthavingfun

increase in CGT, 20%

Has this been announced?

immigration learnings from Italy to pay other countries to take Immigrants

Starmer has not said he is going to follow Italy's Albania idea. Meloni has said Starmer was “very interested” in the Italian plan. Which is a very different thing. But the press are of course twisting it.

Edited

You are correct- these haven't been set in stone yet but gives a sense of their direction and thinking . We shall see

Didn't vote Labour. I knew they would be bad; I didn't think they could be this bad.

This.

And they've barely got started yet. Very worrying for the elderly and vulnerable.

yorktown · 16/09/2024 18:36

Totally. Apart from the daily threads from people asking if we are happy with them. But I can ignore those.

PurBal · 16/09/2024 18:36

Labour said that cutting winter fuel allowance would kill 4000 pensioners about a year ago. I really hope, given they've done away with it, they got their figures wrong and they were lying just to stick one to the Tories.

Very much agreed. As a disabled person, I was very much dreading them coming in- they make the Tories look nice.

There have been no announcements on disability benefits so far. What are you dreading?

They haven’t cut WFA, they are means testing it, instead if this being universal.
Pensions will still be going to be £460 as a universal benefit, and pensioners will be keeping other benefits such as free prescriptions and free travel.

How do you feel the Tories supported you over the last 14 years?

Andoutcomethewolves · 16/09/2024 18:40

urbanbuddha · 16/09/2024 18:20

Yes.
The Tories were far, far worse.
They made the mess that Labour have to clean up.

Yes. Exactly this.

It seems that Labour are being judged for not sorting out 14 years of Tory fuckups in a few weeks, and without making any tough decisions or cuts whatsoever. Completely unrealistic.

Not saying I agree with them on everything but come on ffs give them a chance.

Give it a rest. Show me where the imaginary black hole is and I’ll apologise.

Anyway! I’m having a great time. My parents are vastly wealthy. They don’t give a toss if they get the WFA or not. There’s also no inheritance tax on farmland so I don’t have to worry about paying that later down the line. Clever people hide their money well. I can afford the increase in VAT on school fees and I live in a nice rural area where illegals don’t exist.

They can do what they like. It just doesn’t affect me or my family.

Meanwhile the poor squeezed middle continues to be bled dry while the poor pensioners that live just above the pension credit threshold will really miss that £200.

At least the wife looks good in all her free clothes hey.

No inheritance tax on farmland? Come back on 31st October!

HanaLeigh · 16/09/2024 18:46

Yes.

Some very clear evaluation of the mess left by the Conservatives taking place.
Labour are being open and honest about the state of our country.
