Will Huw get a worse/lighter sentencing today because of his fame?

YABU ... Worse sentence
YANBU ... Lighter setence

No it doesn't. The supplier didn't get sent to prison either, and the discount is because of his early guilty plea which virtually everyone who does that qualifies for.

This is important, because actually what happened today is normal and representative. The people who think he got special treatment don't understand how typical it is for those who commit this offence to avoid prison.

It is a 1/3rd off for a guilty plea, so thats 2 years.

Plenty of people go to jail for having cat A images, the most vile of the 3 categories.

Are you really suggesting that having a top legal team didn't help Edwards defense?

I'm not sure but I have a feeling he might just be an idiot. He didn't specifically ask or agree to see anything illegal, but agreed to see a photo of someone "young" after previously being sent illegal photos by that man in amongst other photos. It doesn't look good but I just felt there was something off today with him apologising as if this is the kind of thing you can say sorry for

He did ask. He even specified an age range, 14-16, that's "specifically" asking. Saying that "he's just an idiot" is utterly, utterly ridiculous.

Why do you think you’re nearer the truth than the court?

The court didn't find him guilty. He pled it. He isn't acting in line with what he's been convicted of (as if he doesn't understand the gravity) and he's in a mental hospital

Did he ?

Yep. Gross isn't it.

A friend's husband got exactly the same sentence for the same offence. He had been a headmaster.

Good grief.

Seriously, this is ridiculous.

If you mean it got him a shorter sentence, no. Didn't need to in this instance, or are you saying you think he was ever going to get more than the supplier?

I'm sure it helped in lots of ways in that eg he'll have had the luxury of knowing he'd chosen who he wanted, he will have been able to pay for any extra time that might've been needed to explain things to him, he won't have had to worry about statutory charges like those on legal aid do. It's still better to go through this being rich than being poor, even when the outcome is the same.

Bloody hell, watching this on the 6 o'clock news has made me SO angry! He brought up in court as part of his defence that he felt an outsider at the BBC because he hadn't been able to get into Oxford! This was in the context of poor mental health. Poor Hugh!

That made me incredibly angry too!! He is completely deluded.

ncforcatquestion · 16/09/2024 19:01

So he's saying he doesn't remember this but he's pled guilty anyway

GPTec1 · 16/09/2024 19:03

The other man got 12months suspended but thats a different trial, different evidence and a different bench.

Yes i do think it got him a lesser sentence, he certainly knew what to do/say and which treatment to seek out, do you think he did any of that off his own bat?
As was his defence "i cannot remember any of it..." "Get treatment" "MH issues"

All contributed to a more lenient sentence.

What this case does show though is we need some real reform on consistent sentencing.

Ok, so what sentence would Edwards have got if he wasn't famous? Prison? Btw if you think legal aid criminal lawyers never mention mental health in mitigation and none of their clients would ever know to bring it up of their own volition, you've clearly not been around many of them. It comes up phenomenally often in legal aid law!

What we actually need is reform of the sentencing guidelines. And some prison space too.

What else would he have to do to be a paedophile?

Regardless of everything else being discussed. (Rightly or wrongly) his sentence is totally normal in the UK for the crime he committed. It was a first offence, not a huge amount of images were ‘made’ and there was no attempt to contact anyone under age.

Very sadly, given then magnitude of indecent image offences in the UK, if he hadn’t been Huw Edwards then he wouldn’t have even made the local paper.

crumblingschools · 16/09/2024 19:54

@ncforcatquestion why do you think he hasn’t committed a crime?

Oh well poor lad, we’d better leave him alone then. What with not getting into Oxford as well, aww what a hard life he’s had 😭

I think they are on the wind up

Images of children as young as 7 and some people here are concerned about the perpetrator. What a fcuked up country.
