I don't think wipes existed when I was a baby. I expect my mum used a flannel. She definitely used to take a wrung out wet flannel in a tupperware beaker on days out, to wipe our chops with.

That's what my Mum did!

I’m with you OP. And funny how many of these planet saving ideas end up generating more work for women. I’ve not yet seen the idea that has men washing shitty cloths.

My husband did and does the washing of our Cheeky Wipes and was surprised initially how easy it is. He’s actually the biggest fan out of two of us as they clean little bums faster and better than disposable wipes.

@mumtoababygirl i was not aware of this. Awful.

How do you know they're awful? You clearly haven't tried them. Soft fluffy (bamboo are best) excellent cleaning ability (one sheet of loo roll goes nowhere), and no bits left behind ( loo roll disintegrates.)

If you don't fancy dealing with poo just use them for wee. Not only good for the planet but good for your body too - so soft!

Scottishskifun · 15/09/2024 19:25

Nappies and wipes go on a wash most machines weigh loads and use the right amount of water. You don't need a hot wash they just go into a nappy bucket straight into a wash bag. You wash every day to 2 days 7-8 nappies a day and wipes. Wipes usually get a pre-soak in wet bucket.

Did you automatically throw away any baby clothes which had a nappy explosion on them..........

Honestly, I can never remember an explosion on an item of clothing as the nappy would have caught the worst of it. Leaks on the edges of bodysuits, yes.

CindyBirdsong · 15/09/2024 19:39

I loved our washable nappies and wipes. They were so soft and fresh. We never had the problem of poo staining as we used a liner and the poo went down the loo. All clean and white bleached by sunshine.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 15/09/2024 19:30

It works the same as every other washing machine, and I do not like the idea. It goes against all the processes that absolutely must be followed in a care or medical environment, where chucking it all in a regular washing machine would not be considered sound.

But your own healthy baby isn't an infection risk as Ill people admitted in hospitals may be.

These are completely different situations.

Admittedly if and when my cloth bummed babies did get a case of d&v the nappies were washed longer and hotter than normal. Or we used disposables to make it easier until it passed. So that infected poop was also going somewhere .... Into landfill. To me that is worse.

YellowphantGrey · 15/09/2024 19:40

UmmJsTL3 · 15/09/2024 19:10

@AutumnLeaves91 facial clothes I get and I do wash them over and over. But a shitty nappy or poo stained wipes? Just… no.

You do know you don't leave the shit in the nappy don't you?! It goes down the toilet and the liner thrown away

Same with wipes, clean them off and pop them in the bucket for soaking before washing

Pre the 80s I'd say almost everyone was reusable nappies? I was born in the 80s and was in them and I used them for DS.

I find it more grim to see used nappies lying around and spilling out of nappy bins in public toilets or strewn across pavements because people have secure their bin bags in bins properly

Saves a fortune too, using reusable

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 15/09/2024 19:40

Sorry what? Have you not heard of a washing machine?

Aussieland · 15/09/2024 19:41

Swiftyvonlifty · 15/09/2024 18:44

Yeah I can't be doing with that either.

Disposable nappies, wipes, face wipes, anti bac wipes here.

And fuck the planet…

how is it any different to reusable nappies? Quite apart from the fewer chemicals / environmental thing - Which I think are brilliant - I think that the texture on my reusable wipes meant they cleaned much more effectively than the disposable ones

MSLRT · 15/09/2024 19:43

UmmJsTL3 · 15/09/2024 19:11

@TheYearOfSmallThings yep exactly! I cannot fathom how someone can put it anywhere near their machine!

Grow up! People like you who probably can’t be bothered to recycle. Don’t you care about the environment? If you use one washable wipe a day that’s 365 wipes less each year in a land fill.

I used washable nappies and wipes on three children and my husband did/does nearly all the laundry.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 15/09/2024 19:44

Anyway OP I just wanted to confirm that you are not the only person who finds it gross!

But you can see why so many people say nothing and just quietly keep using wipes.

isthismylifenow · 15/09/2024 19:44

I think some people are taking the piss on this thread.

Step5678 · 15/09/2024 19:45

I'll tell you what's gross OP, throwing a plastic based nappy and wipes full of waste under the ground to rot(ish) for hundreds of years. Where do you think all the space for landfill comes from?

Washing a reusable nappy and wipe means the waste goes through the sewage system and doesn't destroy the ground.

Scottishskifun · 15/09/2024 19:46

Gigi58 · 15/09/2024 19:39

Honestly, I can never remember an explosion on an item of clothing as the nappy would have caught the worst of it. Leaks on the edges of bodysuits, yes.

So you washed poo garmets in your washing machine......also what did you do with potty training accidents?!

It goes on a separate wash using a specific nappy detergent and you do a weekly drum clean. You don't wash reusable nappies and wipes with your favourite t shirt just do a separate wash then rinse and spin (this is more to ensure all detergent is off the wipes/nappies so you don't get build up/against skin)

OrangeSlices998 · 15/09/2024 19:47

When a baby is under 6m, their poo is water soluble so removed easily by a short wash on their own and then you add baby clothes etc and do a full wash as normal. Over 6m you want to remove most solid lumps of poo, we soaked our wipes and then they could go in with the reusable nappies for their short initial wash and then bulk out the machine for the long wash.

No one is slinging a 2 year olds massive turd the washing machine with next weeks school uniforms!

Yes, it’s convenience over caring about anything.

The “gross” thing is so juvenile. You’re cleaning up shit either way. If you’re using cloth nappies and wipes though, most of it is actually going in the toilet which is surely less “gross” considering that’s where it’s meant to go!

Why wouldn’t they ‘say nothing’? Have you got a massive urge to tell people you use reusable wipes that you currently feel you have to suppress?

Roundaboot · 15/09/2024 19:49

I personally find disposable wipes and nappies really gross. We get fortnightly waste collection here, which I think is fairly common so I'd have shitty wipes and nappies hanging around for a couple of weeks. When DS was in nappies I was doing a wash about twice a week so nothing was ever hanging around for too long
Also the concept of wrapping shit in layers of plastic and sending it off to landfill where it'll fester for hundreds of years is really disgusting!

Yes, disposable nappies sitting for 2 weeks in a bin in the summer must really stink 🤢.

MagdaLenor · 15/09/2024 19:52

Why would you put dirty nappies in an empty bin and leave it for two weeks?

Gigi58 · 15/09/2024 19:52

unsync · 15/09/2024 19:21

Dear me, I swear people get more dense by the day. Cloth nappies and wipes have been around for eons, as have bodily fluids. No, just use disposable plastic nappies though because what's a few extra tonnes into landfill? The nappies are more toxic than their contents. What sort of planet are you wanting your child to live on @UmmJsTL3? Will they thank you for adding to the stress it is already under just because you couldn't cope with a few dirty cloths?

Just because someone decides not to use disposable nappies and/or wipes, it doesn’t make them ‘dense’ and need pointing out that cloth nappies were once the norm. It also doesn’t mean we are feckless and don’t give a damn about the environment and the world our children will grow up in. Most people I know don’t use them, including my most ‘green’ friends and colleagues before life - especially with a newborn - is extremely busy. Surely, there’ll be people who say it’s a matter of them not caring enough or not prioritising something that’s important. My first baby had a very upset stomach for the entire time she was exclusively breastfed. We changed about twenty (small poo) nappies a day, including a few during the early hours. There was not a chance I would have used disposable nappies and wipes and added to an already pretty stressful period. I’m sure there will be many who use disposable nappies and wipes but, for instance, travel by plane a great deal (unnecessarily). Each to their own.
