As long as they are cleaned properly then not a problem 🤷🏼‍♀️

I’m with you OP. And funny how many of these planet saving ideas end up generating more work for women. I’ve not yet seen the idea that has men washing shitty cloths.

My husband did most of the laundry when ours were little.

TempestTost · 15/09/2024 19:08

You know a lot of people use cloth diapers, right?

If you are, you just toss the reusable wipes right into the diaper bucket. It's much less wasteful and also better for their bums, there are some nasty things in the disposable wipes.

SecondFavouriteDinosaur · 15/09/2024 18:39

It’s weird with people whose partners don’t take on their share of the load assumes that everyone’s partner is the same.

I don't know how some of these men get away with it.

isthismylifenow · 15/09/2024 19:08

Where have you been OP?

My first born is 25 now and was in washable nappies. I used resuable wipes then too, seeing I was washing the nappies anyway.

There must be much more fancy resuable ones about these days surely?

SunQueen24 · 15/09/2024 19:09

I use period pants which is a similar concept. Doesn’t bother me at all.

Jeezitneverends · 15/09/2024 19:09

UmmJsTL3 · 15/09/2024 18:20

I just think it’s gross… we don’t do that as adults!!!

Do you not use a flannel/facecloth and put it in the wash?
What do you think people did before wipes?

TheYearOfSmallThings · 15/09/2024 19:10

I also think it is gross OP. I know we're in the wrong environmentally, but in hospitals we have very specific processes for disposing of human waste, and meticulous processes for sterilising anything that isn't disposed of. The idea of throwing shitty wipes in the family washing machine does not appeal to me.

Ecstaticmotion · 15/09/2024 19:10

We do… period pants.

Allthegoodusernamesareused · 15/09/2024 19:10

We couldn't use disposable wipes for DD2 as she had such sensitive skin, so used cotton wool and water, then moved on to flannels when she was a bit bigger. Granted, it's more of a faff when you're out, but really not that big a deal.

angellinaballerina7 · 15/09/2024 19:10

I know they’re supposed to be eco-friendly, but I think I’d ruin the fact they’re better by sticking them on at 90 on a steam cycle…

Singleandproud · 15/09/2024 19:10

It's not all or nothing though.
Reusable wipes are great for hands and faces as well as toileting and saves on disposable makeup wipes.
Reusable sanitary pro is great for use at home even if you don't want to use it out and about.
Reusable nappies are great but perhaps people would rather use them at home if they find it too much of a faff.

All of the above can be soaked, rinsed and thrown in the washing machine and is no different to other soiled clothing. If you find it gross just do them on a separate wash.

What I think is gross is bags of nappies, wipes and disposable sanitary products going to landfill for at least 500+ years. Being eaten by other creatures when they eventually make their way into the food chain and eventually back into us. They are all new products and we managed without for millennia even without washing machines.

@UmmJsTL3 what about reusable facial cloths? Reusable/washable sanitary pads? Just saying actually, lots of adults do the same with similar products! :)

@AutumnLeaves91 facial clothes I get and I do wash them over and over. But a shitty nappy or poo stained wipes? Just… no.

@TheYearOfSmallThings yep exactly! I cannot fathom how someone can put it anywhere near their machine!

Not the point of the thread but I just switched to washable makeup pads. DELIGHTED how easy they are the clean and dry 😁

What would you have done if you’d lived 50 years ago, before disposable wipes and nappies were invented?

Dibbydoos · 15/09/2024 19:12

@UmmJsTL3 what are you talking about? When you wash stuff, dirt bacteria etc is removed, so what's the big deal?!

My kids used reusable nappies. It wasn't smelly etc, solids are easily plopped down the loo cos they slide on the fleecey fabric, liquids were just mopped up. Nappies were soaked in Milton before a load were washed together. Simples.

I personally prefer toilets with a shower attachment and soap so you can actually clean yourself when you've been to the loo. You tend to use a cloth afterwards. This by far the cleanest way to toilet. The cloth just goes in the wash with washing powder and if you're like me some disinfectant in the rinse.

The env is in critical danger of collapse and so too is human wellbeing and life hang. Everyone needs to get with the programme...!

Wondering if you have germophobic tenancies...pooing and peeing are natural bodily functions after all...

Ifoughthefight · 15/09/2024 19:13

lol, when I was aupairing my aupair mum would give me kitchen towels to dry bits in the bathroom once I rubbed clean that with water and bleach. We never caught any stomach disease

No, it's not gross.
We used reusable nappies and reusable wipes. We washed them between uses.

MagdaLenor · 15/09/2024 19:14

You put all sorts of things in your washing machine. By the final rinse, everything is clean. Including the machine. A bit of baby poo is not a problem. It all seems a bit over the top squeamish.

I agree tbh. Surely they need to be washed alone too and on a hot (long) wash? Feels like there’ll be a lot of wasted space when a long wash is taking place..?

Also surely they need washing really quickly after being soiled? So again, no time for them to accumulate to put a wash on with many of them in there.

Also, I don’t think they are the same as period pants.

MadKittenWoman · 15/09/2024 19:18

leapinglizard1234 · 15/09/2024 18:56

I use reusable face wipes

I wash my face at night and they go in the wash with the wash that was going on anyways

Nothing gross about that

So much better for the planet and my face

This. We also used washable nappies and I use period pants or similar instead of Tena Lady pads.
