OP posts:

We used them plus reusable nappies.

My husband took an equal share in washing.

Weirdly washing machines are very good these days

I’m with you OP. And funny how many of these planet saving ideas end up generating more work for women. I’ve not yet seen the idea that has men washing shitty cloths.

My husband washed the wipes too. Granted I probably did slightly more, as I was on maternity leave and he was at work, but on his 6 week paternity leave he did 90% of the nappies and 100% of the washing, and he even (gasps!) managed to wash reusable nappies and wipes in the evenings and at weekends when he was back at work.
And when I also went back to work, it was all split 50:50.

SecondFavouriteDinosaur · 15/09/2024 18:36

Not that chucking some wipes in a washing machine is a massively onerous task. We’re not talking carting them down to the nearest stream to wash them, or using a mangle.

UmmJsTL3 · 15/09/2024 18:20

I just think it’s gross… we don’t do that as adults!!!

@UmmJsTL3 what about reusable facial cloths? Reusable/washable sanitary pads? Just saying actually, lots of adults do the same with similar products! :)

SouthLondonMum22 · 15/09/2024 18:38

Not for me but because I already have enough washing as it is. I’ve used baby wipes from birth.

We used cloth nappies and DH used the washing machine during that time no problem.

SecondFavouriteDinosaur · 15/09/2024 18:39

It’s weird with people whose partners don’t take on their share of the load assumes that everyone’s partner is the same.

Marylou62 · 15/09/2024 18:40

Do you realise that reusable baby wipes are a new invention and my dcs (late 20s/early 30s) were all in terry nappies and I used flannels for cleaning up? If I was out it was a couple of wet flannels in a carrier bag which was then taken home for a soak in the bucket of napisan and washed on a hot wash..
My kids never got stomach bugs..

Slobberchops1 · 15/09/2024 18:41

It’s fine , they go in the wash . I don’t understand your issue

Anotherparkingthread · 15/09/2024 18:42

Yabu op.

It's no different from spilling something something on your clothes or getting dirty underwear and then and then washing the item.

What about period pants or washable sanitary towels?

Do you throw all your underwear away after one use?

Baffling.

Swiftyvonlifty · 15/09/2024 18:44

Yeah I can't be doing with that either.

Disposable nappies, wipes, face wipes, anti bac wipes here.

bluecomputerscreen · 15/09/2024 18:45

yabu
disposable wipes are gross.
the smell, the slimy way they push dirt around...

big fan of flannels and soap & water here

Ponderingwindow · 15/09/2024 18:52

Some of us are allergic to the disposable crap that other people are using on their babies every day. Knowing how badly it impacts me and others like me as an adult, I honestly can’t believe we as a society have decided it is ok to expose some of the most sensitive parts of a child’s body to these substances 24-7 for multiple years.

Areolaborealis · 15/09/2024 18:56

In order for them not to be disgusting they either have to be cleaned with chemicals or at a high temperature - neither of which is cheap or great for the environment.

leapinglizard1234 · 15/09/2024 18:56

I use reusable face wipes

I wash my face at night and they go in the wash with the wash that was going on anyways

Nothing gross about that

So much better for the planet and my face

Beth216 · 15/09/2024 18:56

Disposable wipes are disgusting - why would you put all those chemicals on your tiny baby every time you change them? Being wiped over with a cold slimy wipe is gross IMO. A reusable wipe with lovely warm water is much nicer and more natural.

We used reusable nappies. My husband did most of the laundry. It really wasn't a problem.

I just think it’s gross… we don’t do that as adults!!!

Most of us also don’t poo and pee in nappies, suck on dummies, drink milk from our mothers nipples, sleep all day, babble instead of talk or get crawl around on all fours.

As adults, we often do things differently to babies.

pictoosh · 15/09/2024 19:02

Seems a harmless item to hate so much.

Isseywith3witchycats · 15/09/2024 18:20

funny how women kept their children clean for thousands of years before wipes were invented, one use ones are so bad for the planet and washable ones are just an upgrade from flannels

This. I'm one of six kids, we all had terry nappies - everyone did!

“Planet saving ideas”

My Nan had 4 babies who all used terry towelling squares for nappies.

My parents did the same with me. Disposables weren’t available till my sister was born in 1980.

300,000 years of human evolution where disposable nappies and wipes weren’t available. Didn’t take long for commercialism to take over, did it?

I used reusable nappies and wipes with DD, who now uses reusable sanitary wear. It’s brilliant.

This. I used those linen ones at first, later on towelling.

SlashBeef · 15/09/2024 19:05

I don't understand the comparisons to underwear or clothes? Who is regularly smearing shit on their pants? I couldn't stomach having a bucket of shitty wipes sitting waiting to be washed.

I know! It's such an easy task, I've no idea why people are horrified.

CaptainMyCaptain · 15/09/2024 19:05

I had my baby in 1980 and there were no packs of wet wipes. I used a damp flannel. No problem.
