Why would you put dirty nappies in an empty bin and leave it for two weeks?

If your bins are only collected every other week.

(Alternatively you could wash reusables)

I personally find disposable wipes and nappies really gross. We get fortnightly waste collection here, which I think is fairly common so I'd have shitty wipes and nappies hanging around for a couple of weeks. When DS was in nappies I was doing a wash about twice a week so nothing was ever hanging around for too long
Also the concept of wrapping shit in layers of plastic and sending it off to landfill where it'll fester for hundreds of years is really disgusting!

Good points. Someone on another thread said that if disposable wipes had been around at the time of King Henry VIII, they'd still be around now. I suspect maybe further back than that.

Yup. Now that is disgusting.

Sorry, I misunderstood. Yes, that's right. Far better to use reusable ones.

This is what it boils (no pun intended) down to for me. I had a tough postnatal period due to my daughter’s health that I wouldn’t wish on anyone.

ButterAsADip · 15/09/2024 19:56

After the first 6 months (when they’re on solids) the vast majority of the poo goes in the toilet anyway. Just like it should do if you’re using disposables, yeah? 😉

NotSmallButFunSize · 15/09/2024 19:57

Loved our Cheeky Wipes - so much better than disposable ones. If a poo was really bad I did most of the clean up with toilet roll and then just did the final skin wipe with the cloth, no need to get the cloth caked in poo.

The horror now is that we still have them and use them for face wipes for the kids' bathroom 😱

What really makes me cringe though is when people get the pack of wipes out after a mealtime at home - get a bloody flannel, you're near your own sink! Even the dishcloth would be better, so wasteful to use wipes!

Exactly this. The number of people I’ve seen just wrap up a massive poo in a nappy and put it in the bin 🤢. I’m not sure people realise (or care?) that you’re supposed to put the solid poo down the toilet, even if you’re using disposables. All that shit sat in landfill.

Todaysbetterthanyesterday · 15/09/2024 19:58

Have you never heard of flannels? Muslin, dishcloths ? They alll get pretty dirty and yet…. There is this marvel called soap and water.

Some people do…. Even as adults. Some cultures it’s even the norm!!

@aussieland I just don't care that much to be absolutely honest.

Mamma273627 · 15/09/2024 20:03

But when babies have poo-namis or have accidents they get it all over their clothes. What about when kids (or anyone) have accidents? Should we be chucking them all away every time? That seems more wasteful.

Just use a 90 degree wash, it's fine!

I’m with you OP. And funny how many of these planet saving ideas end up generating more work for women. I’ve not yet seen the idea that has men washing shitty cloths.

We had reusable wipes for our baby, and another set for weaning/feeding. And reusable nappies. My husband was totally competent in throwing them in the machine, drying them and putting them back to where they belong. Welcome to modern times.

As I used full time cloth with both of mine (apart from the odd illness) when my friend would come over with her same age baby, I could smell when she had done a wee in her disposable nappy.

If you are not used to that smell, it is very noticeable.

My whole family uses reusable wipes 🤷‍♀️ they go in the washing machine with the baby’s nappies every two days. Why do you find them so gross?

How do you think people managed for centuries before reusable wipes and washing machines were invented?

RosesAndHellebores · 15/09/2024 20:06

UmmJsTL3 · 15/09/2024 19:11

@TheYearOfSmallThings yep exactly! I cannot fathom how someone can put it anywhere near their machine!

You soak them first. It's a very similar principle to face flannels and dishcloths.

Are there other things you are precious about? Touching meat? Gardening? Mucking out? What on earth will you do when your baby grows up a little and brings home: worms, nits, etc?

It's funny how so many of the men on here managed it perfectly well! I think some women have low expectations of the men in their lives.

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 15/09/2024 20:06

Did you throw away any baby clothes that got poo on them? Didn't you just wash them?

Last night DD2 threw up a couple of times over her bedding. That went in the washing machine as well after a rinse. Washing machines do get gross stuff in them fairly often.

I actually didn't use reusable wipes, but not because I thought they were gross. I do use reusable period pads though.

My partner does the laundry more than me, and throwing wipes from a basket into a machine isn’t too taxing anyway

Bignanna · 15/09/2024 20:08

MarvellousDay · 15/09/2024 18:21

Why do you think they are gross.. I found they were amazing and much better to clean. If their nappy leaks surely you don't throw away the outfit. This is similar. You also don't throw away your underwear after every use. If you don't think your washing machine does a good enough cleaning job you need another one.

Presumably your underwear isn’t covered with wee and faeces when you Chuck them in the washing machine?

It's only more work for women if the woman is doing the laundry. That may be the norm, but that's not the fault of reusable wipes. It's the fault of men who do fuck all.

My DH is perfectly capable of doing the washing, and does it regularly.

justasking111 · 15/09/2024 20:09

I used damp cotton wool to wipe bottoms and Terry nappies. Muslins too. I do admit I did keep in a pack of disposables in case of emergencies.

Wet wipes I never really took to I did feel guilty environmentally. But kept a pack in the baby bag just incase.
