Does anyone seriously enjoy sourdough?

I just find the crust so tough and chewy. I always feel so undignified ripping a bite off like a wild animal, usually while the filling drops everywhere.

Posh, artisan type places seem to all love a bit of sourdough, I just don't get it. What am I missing?!!

We've got a local bakery that makes great sourdough. Have it as toast most mornings.

oakleaffy · 14/09/2024 14:40

Don’t like the sour taste- even toasted.

Notcontent · 14/09/2024 14:41

The supermarket sliced bread that people think of as being “normal” bread is not actually proper bread. It’s a supermarket invention that was introduced in the 1960s (or earlier) and has all sorts of odd ingredients that you should not find in bread.

It’s all about what you are used to eating. My dd was chewing on hunks of sourdough when she was 12 months so that kind of bread, as well as heavier rye bread, is her normal now as a teen. We eat it not because we are “posh” or any other reason other than that to us that is bread - the supermarket stuff that comes in plastic bags is not.

Ha no I didn't - total coincidence. My DH picked up a few things for lunch today and I'd asked him to get bread, and yep he picked up sourdough. Totally ruined my lunchtime sandwich.

So, joy of joys, given this thread, DH came back from getting the car cleaned with a loaf of rye sourdough from a decent bakery. I had a soft poached egg with black pepper and avocado . The sour taste goes perfectly with the richness of the yolk which oozes out and into all the air holes and the bread has the body to soak it up without going soggy. Yum,
Then, thanks to this thread causing me to fixate, I have just crept back for another toasted slice. Pudding. I have before me a slice of magnificence: a golden crisp crust with a gleaming layer of homemade apricot jam I was given for my birthday which has collected in the holes like pools of liquid amber. It is just so good. A battle of the deepest, sweetest apricot resisted by the tart undertone of apricot which is joined in battle by the tangy sourdough. And that’s before I start on the textures: crunch, bounce, ooze. So simple and so perfect.

No. It's got a sour taste!! And not in a good way.

It's bloody everywhere though.

I tried so hard to like it.
Rye bread is bitter, too.

A good whole meal seedy bread is my favourite

What REALLY grossed me out is that cheap
supermarket bread has human hair by product in it -from China
l- cysteine(?) as a preservative.

Supermarket bread is moist and flabby - The hair thing really put me off.

Fascinating. I grew up on sourdough as it was pretty much the only type of bread you'd eat where I come from. This and baguette-style bread/rolls. My DH and I had a short period of eating hovis-type of bread but we found it sooo processed and plasticky that we went back to sourdough. Hovis &co. is nice for pb&j and other sweet spreads but not for savoury toppings.

I'm all for a crusty fresh loaf, just not sourdough. It's pushing out our native species, it's the grey squirrel of baked goods!

oakleaffy · 14/09/2024 14:51

Duck feathers, human hair and hog bristles in some store bought bread. ( article above)

brunettemic · 14/09/2024 15:03

Yep, absolutely love it.

TheOliveGoose · 14/09/2024 15:04

I really dislike it. It's sour and awful.

I make my own soda bread and that's the only bread I eat. It's quick and easy to make, no need to wait for it to rise, no stretching or kneading, literally just a few minutes to throw it all together, in the oven and done.

hobblingAlong · 14/09/2024 15:09

We eat Morrisons California sourdough bread and love it.

I think DH stomach tolerates it better than normal bread which I find too doughy as well.

WhereAreWeNow · 14/09/2024 15:10

I love it. The more sour/tangy the better. Toasted with butter. Delicious.

Arafon · 14/09/2024 15:15

I think my bread maker makes sourdough, though it might be a bit of a palaver, I originally bought it as it makes rye bread as that isn't easy to find apart from the little prepacked sliced loaves.

starfishmummy · 14/09/2024 15:25

I like Sourdough but the same as with any bread there are some things I like it for and others where a different type of bread is better.

greengreyblue · 14/09/2024 15:26

I love it toasted. My favourite .Had never thought of using it for a sandwich, wrong shape.

TyotyaKlava · 14/09/2024 15:27

It’s the only bread I will eat. I make my own sourdough at home once a week. It’s nice toasted with avocado and eggs. Also nice toasted with Camembert cheese. Also no sourdough crackers 🤤🤤🤤

forevernumb · 14/09/2024 15:51

Love it!

Womanofcustard · 14/09/2024 15:53

Love it but can’t eat it because of the hard crusts.

TangerinePlate · 14/09/2024 16:00

Not every sourdough bread is sour. Freshly fed active starter is not acidic.

I love it and make it ❤️

Concretejungle1 · 14/09/2024 16:01

Yes love it

This is true, you can alter the taste depending how long you leave it

What bread are you earting OP?
I personally fiund UK has the most disgusting bread in the whole of Europe (and probably the whole world right after the US) and sourdough is one of the only decent ones you can get that is edible.
