To ask why people hang poo on trees?

This perplexes me. I can’t think of anything more disgusting than hanging a bag of shit on a tree. Yet they are everywhere.

Someone on here must know someone who does this. What is going through their heads when they do it? Is it a massive “fuck you” to society now expecting poo to be scooped up (I grew up in the 70s/80s when it was acceptable just to leave it on the pavement)?

Or do they think that somehow hanging it like a macabre bauble is what they are meant to do? Do they believe that the Faeces Fairy will come and clear the trees at night time?

No idea. It's really bizarre

Pootles34 · 10/09/2024 08:02

No clue - hoping someone comes along who knows! The weird thing is they've done the gross bit of picking it up - why bother if you leave the bag?! So weird.

Carnageisthenewnormal · 10/09/2024 08:04

Lots of walks don't have bins on so people hang them on trees or leave them somewhere noticeable to pick them up on the way back to the car, home etc rather than carry the poop bag the entire way.

Whaleandsnail6 · 10/09/2024 08:04

Its horrible. There is absolutely no excuse.

Even if you have more than one dog so more than one poo to carry, just use another poo bag as a little carrier bag to carry them in.

I'm never going to believe there is a situation where people have to do this. Its just laziness and half arsed dog care. Ok so noone can stand in it but who wants to look at bags of poo hanging from bushes and trees?!

UltramarineViolet · 10/09/2024 08:04

You are right, it's grim!

I'm sure a dog owner will be on soon to claim it's been left there for the owner to pick up later but the reality is that never happens

If you were out and about and changed your baby's nappy, you wouldn't leave the nappy bag hanging from a tree to collect later so not sure why some bog owners think it's an acceptable practice

Badbadbunny · 10/09/2024 08:05

They're the ones who only picked it up in the first place because someone was watching them. Otherwise they'd have left it on the path. Then they carry it, pretending to be responsible, and chuck it somewhere when there's no one watching them because they can't be bothered to carry it home or to a bin!

poppyzbrite4 · 10/09/2024 08:06

They don't want to carry it on their walk, so hang it up.

Ha Ha! They just say that when challenged. In reality, they've no intention of picking them up again.

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 10/09/2024 08:06

I have never seen this

SleepGoalsJumped · 10/09/2024 08:06

My theory is that it would have started off with people on country walks with no bins and a there-and-back route planning to leave the poo there on the way out and collect it up on the way back to bin when they get home so that they don't have to carry a bag of poo with them for the whole walk. However from time to time someone would miss a bag and every time a selfish arsehole sees one they see it as actually permission and an invitation to do this because clearly it's an acceptable thing to do so the problem multiplies, and becomes common even on routes where bins exist.

But it makes the area really unpleasant.

Part of being a dog owner is unfortunately carrying bags of poo on your walks!

Wolfpa · 10/09/2024 08:08

They will act like they are leaving it there so it is noticeable and they will pick it up on their return of the walk.

really they are just disgusting and probably think it’s funny to make the outdoors less enjoyable for other people

gretathegremlin · 10/09/2024 08:08

I think it's because they think they are being vey vey responsible in not leaving it on the ground to get trodden on or wheeled through, but can't be arsed to actually walk to the nearest bin with it.

SensibleSigma · 10/09/2024 08:09

I used to leave the bag for my return journey 20mins later- not in a tree- but was thoroughly disabused of the notion that was ok, so I no longer do.

Are they walking from Land’s End to John O’Groats and back? Because those bags are waiting there weeks for them to return.

I’m bemused at the idea that a lack of poo bins requires antisocial measures. Surely dog poo bins are the exception rather than the norm on most walks that are not in municipal parks?

OP posts:
HotCrossBunplease · 10/09/2024 08:16

I think that if you choose to go out and about with a dog you need to accept that you must not leave the shit unattended at any time.

These owners need to carry a zipped bag with them to put the poo in, rather than leaving it hanging and stinking for others on their walk. It’s disgusting to leave it lying around.

The happy comparison was a good one. Mums never leave nappies hanging to ‘pick up later’, we bag them and take them with us if there is no nappy bin .

SedentaryCat · 10/09/2024 08:18

There's an pathway here known to the DCs as 'dog poo alley' - if it isn't on the floor it's in a bag in the trees. There's a dog poo bin at the end of this (at most) 100m stretch so no reason to leave it.

Icanthinkformyselfthanks · 10/09/2024 08:18

They go out for a walk with their dog and it does a crap but there is no poo bin in sight so they think they are being thoughtful by hanging the bag from a tree so that no one treads on it. It seems not to occur to the lazy, entitled buggers that they should take it home with them. I doubt anyone will own up to doing this.

Or it could be that they're lazy half-arsed fuckers who literally don't give a shit.

In case you hadn't noticed - it really pisses me off!

But then they don't pick them up!

I see bags just dotted along the verges around here. It really annoys me - just no consideration for other people or the environment at all.

NeedBiggerWindChimes · 10/09/2024 08:25

I don't think comparing it to hanging nappies from trees is the same thing. I've never had to change my baby anywhere where there weren't facilities or I wasn't near my car.

I always carry the bags on walks, though confess that on two occasions I have hidden it behind a tree to collect later (not hung it in a tree or put it anywhere anyone will see it). I walk my dogs in areas it's unlikely anyone else will go, so the hiding isn't even really necessary. The two times I did it was because I was doing a long walk and didn't want to carry it for that long. I also did actually reclaim the bags on the way back and take them home. It would be wrong not to. 99.9% of the time though, I'm carrying it the whole way.

I think hanging it in a tree is gross though. No-one wants to see that.
