To ask why people hang poo on trees?

This perplexes me. I can’t think of anything more disgusting than hanging a bag of shit on a tree. Yet they are everywhere.

Someone on here must know someone who does this. What is going through their heads when they do it? Is it a massive “fuck you” to society now expecting poo to be scooped up (I grew up in the 70s/80s when it was acceptable just to leave it on the pavement)?

Or do they think that somehow hanging it like a macabre bauble is what they are meant to do? Do they believe that the Faeces Fairy will come and clear the trees at night time?

I have never seen a dog walker retrieve a poo bag from a branch.

When my children were primary aged the walk to school was along a walkway. 1970’s estate. The path was lined both sides with a hedge. Constantly there was poo bags in the hedge. Feel sorry for the people who owned the hedge as that was their boundaries between the path and their garden.

Even in a bag , poo smells escape. It can only be laziness and unwillingness to do the right thing.

Are they walking from Land’s End to John O’Groats and back? Because those bags are waiting there weeks for them to return.

Lol, exactly.
I've followed a few cars with poo bags hanging on the tow bars. Just what on earth is that about? I saw one, thought it must have been a joke, but I've seen a couple more since. Imagine it flying off at high speed 🤢

I have a plastic container with lid in the back of the car. Can't smell it then.

Walking through a park in Cornwall last week, with my dog, some lazy fucker had put a full up poo bag on a bench, in sight of the poo bins. I carry bags bloody miles to find a bin.

But surely the turd swinging from a tree in the wind is just as repulsive?

I guess people chuck it then walk away. Definitely more repulsive but only if you're looking/smelling/having a sense of human decency.

Sartre · 10/09/2024 09:09

My guess is they think it’s neater than leaving it on the ground where someone may tread on it, maybe some warped thinking that it’s better for the environment if it isn’t degrading on the ground too… I have absolutely no clue. I always figured they just hung it there momentarily and forgot to grab it but it happens way too much for it to be that.

That is only what the grim dog owners tell people when their caught. Never seen anyone actually pick one up again.

Beekeepingmum · 10/09/2024 09:17

We know NA DO ALT but enough are that the dog owning community should do something about it.

rainbowsparkle28 · 10/09/2024 09:17

With a plan they will collect it on their way back round so don't have to carry it with them the whole walk. How many people actually do though is another question...

It baffles me - carrying the bagged poo is the easy bit!

Paterson8080 · 10/09/2024 09:32

I went for a dog walk with a friend who bagged the poo, tied it up and then threw it in the bushes. I asked why and he said it is good for the plants - the bags are biodegradable. (But I have read that this is not true because dog food is full of chemicals).

I hate carrying bags of poo but that's the price you pay. I have read that post pandemic people don't like touching bin lids but that is a poor excuse.

I would like to hear from a dog owner who does this and thinks it is OK!

I don't think comparing it to hanging nappies from trees is the same thing. I've never had to change my baby anywhere where there weren't facilities or I wasn't near my car.

I always carry the bags on walks, though confess that on two occasions I have hidden it behind a tree to collect later (not hung it in a tree or put it anywhere anyone will see it). I walk my dogs in areas it's unlikely anyone else will go, so the hiding isn't even really necessary. The two times I did it was because I was doing a long walk and didn't want to carry it for that long. I also did actually reclaim the bags on the way back and take them home. It would be wrong not to. 99.9% of the time though, I'm carrying it the whole way.

I think hanging it in a tree is gross though. No-one wants to see that.

I have had to change my babies on walks and in woods. This weekend we were out walking and my 1 year old started shouting "poo". I always carry pull ups and wipes. I put them in nappy sacks and put them back in my bag. Like a civilised person!

Lots of walks don't have bins on so people hang them on trees or leave them somewhere noticeable to pick them up on the way back to the car, home etc rather than carry the poop bag the entire way.

This but then forget all about it. So they're left hanging

Yeah right.

I live in the country and no-one ever comes back for the bags of shit.

I actually take them down and dispose of them because I hate to see plastic in the countryside.

If you really can't bear to take it away and dispose of it yourself, then just kick it into the hedge - not ideal but better than leaving a plastic bag hanging from a tree.

Flamboyantly · 10/09/2024 09:39

Met someone I slightly know on a walk (both of us with dogs) and whilst we were exchanging pleasantries one of hers did an enormous poo on the path. She made No move to pick up so I said ‘it’s ok . I’ve got some bags’ and she said she didn’t usually bother’out in the country’ . I said I always did if I thought it was where someone might tread in it. I bent down to pick it up (from her dog) and then she said ‘I’ve got so biodegradable bags. Use one of those and chuck it in the hedge’ . I just said I still thought they took a very long time to disappear and we parted company, me carrying her dogs poo! So perhaps the people hanging them on trees are using magical biodegradable ones…People are very odd.

Ghilliegums · 10/09/2024 09:40

The biodegradable ones still take years to break down. They are a con.

They don’t though. There have been some hanging in the tree opposite my house for days. They’ll be there until I take them down and put them in my own bin.

It’s a pretty regular occurrence

ICallPeopleDudeNow · 10/09/2024 09:47

Honestlymade · 10/09/2024 08:16

These owners need to carry a zipped bag with them to put the poo in, rather than leaving it hanging and stinking for others on their walk. It’s disgusting to leave it lying around.

The happy comparison was a good one. Mums never leave nappies hanging to ‘pick up later’, we bag them and take them with us if there is no nappy bin .

Exactly. We've got a zippy bag that has a de-pong disc in the top (I can't think of the proper name...) so it doesn't smell. We can then dispose of the poo bags in the nearest bin or if need be take them home. You can literally sniff the outside of the zippy bag and it doesn't smell of anything. It has a carabiner to clip onto belts or bags, too. Wish I could remember the name of it... it's bugging me now! 😂

I walk at night quite often, over the fields/footpaths near where I live.

I do have a head torch, but now and again (maybe when I'm ducking round an overhanging branch or something) I'll get smacked around the head with a full dog poo bag. This does not give me the feeling of well being that the walk is meant to achieve. Fuckers.

DiscoBeat · 10/09/2024 09:51

I nevee hang them from trees but sometimes I leave them in the undergrowth at the base of trees (in the middle of the fields I walk in) and collect them on the way back, eg if I'm going to lunch and the pub won't appreciate my luggage! But they're out of sight and I ALWAYS remember to collect them on the way back.

Blackberriesandcobwebs · 10/09/2024 09:51

I'm sure biodegradeable doesn't mean they disappear if left in a hedge for a week. They only disappear from our hedge because I get fed up and put them in our bin! 🤬

cookiebee · 10/09/2024 09:53

I have a dog and just carry mine, but have seen all sorts of different behaviours regarding this. I came out of my house one morning to a dog turd in front of the gate, and yes some just let their dog shit and pretend they didn’t see or claim they are unable to bend down to pick it up, however there are gadgets for this, so no excuse. I’ve seen the bags in trees, some do leave them for when they circle back, some pick them up, some forget and I’m sure some just say sod it. And another annoying thing, there is a volunteer, it could be the national trust but I doubt it as they don’t like anything that helps people, but anyway someone leaves a black bag in a spot on a walk then changes it daily, it’s for dog walkers to put the poo bags in. It’s wonderful, but if it’s ever not there, walkers just leave the poo bags in a pile, I never do as someone then has to pick them all up when they put the new bag there, it’s entitled!

Another time I saw a notice saying ‘please don’t leave your dog poo bags here, I don’t know who you think will clean them up’. What had happened was one person had left a bag of dog poo and others had followed, it had turned into everyone assuming this was an official bin spot for some reason, we really are all heard minded idiots, it shows that we are indeed just stupid mammals really.

But that behaviour I’ve just described, I also have witnessed at the local beach. One person put their bag of rubbish next to the boardwalk, then everyone followed with that heard mentality, there are big bins in the car park, but humans can be lazy and just follow everyone else, or think fuck it. It still to this day surprises me how many just throw litter out of their cars or just drop it as they walk, I just can’t get my head around it. Some parents clean up after their kids in a restaurant, while others leave an area looking like a shit tip. Some of us are clean and tidy, I litter pick sometimes on a dog walk, then others walk all over that and dump their crap everywhere.

This isn’t a problem with dog walkers, it’s a problem with humans, some humans are just fucking disrespectful arseholes. I’m bored of these threads designed to trash dog owners, let’s have a conversation about the real issue, which is people!

Emmacb82 · 10/09/2024 09:53

Its even worse when they pick it up and then leave the bag on the floor which inevitably gets trodden on and spread about the pavement. I’m a mild person but dog poo left for people to tread on makes me mad. Why should some poor kid end up having it on their shoes on the walk to school just because some irresponsible owner can’t be bothered to look after their pet.
