To ask why people hang poo on trees?

This perplexes me. I can’t think of anything more disgusting than hanging a bag of shit on a tree. Yet they are everywhere.

Someone on here must know someone who does this. What is going through their heads when they do it? Is it a massive “fuck you” to society now expecting poo to be scooped up (I grew up in the 70s/80s when it was acceptable just to leave it on the pavement)?

Or do they think that somehow hanging it like a macabre bauble is what they are meant to do? Do they believe that the Faeces Fairy will come and clear the trees at night time?

Years ago in the area I used to live in there was a gross trend of kids/young teens taking tied up bags out of poo bins and seeing who could throw them higher/further into nearby trees. 🤢 I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen them do it myself. Of course they scarpered as soon as they saw me coming. Quite a few bags had burst all over the nearby path from bad throws as well.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 10/09/2024 09:56

I often take the dog on long walks in the lakes and there aren't always bins - I hook the poo bags onto my rucksack and ditch them when I pass a bin.

There is absolutely no excuse

I have a dog and just carry mine, but have seen all sorts of different behaviours regarding this. I came out of my house one morning to a dog turd in front of the gate, and yes some just let their dog shit and pretend they didn’t see or claim they are unable to bend down to pick it up, however there are gadgets for this, so no excuse. I’ve seen the bags in trees, some do leave them for when they circle back, some pick them up, some forget and I’m sure some just say sod it. And another annoying thing, there is a volunteer, it could be the national trust but I doubt it as they don’t like anything that helps people, but anyway someone leaves a black bag in a spot on a walk then changes it daily, it’s for dog walkers to put the poo bags in. It’s wonderful, but if it’s ever not there, walkers just leave the poo bags in a pile, I never do as someone then has to pick them all up when they put the new bag there, it’s entitled!

Another time I saw a notice saying ‘please don’t leave your dog poo bags here, I don’t know who you think will clean them up’. What had happened was one person had left a bag of dog poo and others had followed, it had turned into everyone assuming this was an official bin spot for some reason, we really are all heard minded idiots, it shows that we are indeed just stupid mammals really.

But that behaviour I’ve just described, I also have witnessed at the local beach. One person put their bag of rubbish next to the boardwalk, then everyone followed with that heard mentality, there are big bins in the car park, but humans can be lazy and just follow everyone else, or think fuck it. It still to this day surprises me how many just throw litter out of their cars or just drop it as they walk, I just can’t get my head around it. Some parents clean up after their kids in a restaurant, while others leave an area looking like a shit tip. Some of us are clean and tidy, I litter pick sometimes on a dog walk, then others walk all over that and dump their crap everywhere.

This isn’t a problem with dog walkers, it’s a problem with humans, some humans are just fucking disrespectful arseholes. I’m bored of these threads designed to trash dog owners, let’s have a conversation about the real issue, which is people!

Sorry, there was no intention to trash dog owners generally, just the ones who leave shit in trees. I do agree that people generally can be disgusting about litter too, but hanging bags full of shit in trees is next level compared to crisp packets and sweet wrappers. Fortunately even the worst of humans don’t yet carry their own excrement round in bags, so dog owners are the clear culprits here!

The path was lined both sides with a hedge. Constantly there was poo bags in the hedge. Feel sorry for the people who owned the hedge as that was their boundaries between the path and their garden.

Thinking about it where ever there a boundary between someone's house and an alley way that's usually where I've seen it be much worse. Maybe we're lucky as wood here don't have the same problem.

I have had to change babies and toddlers with no facilities - don't drive and country walks can be long - always took the nappies home to dispose. Most of the walks though do have dog poo bins somewhere along them - so really don't get it.

Disturbia81 · 10/09/2024 10:00

It is unpleasant carrying a swinging pile of steaming dog poo but it's part of the experience I'm afraid! They need to get better bags

ThisFunHedgehog · 10/09/2024 10:02

Because they’re lazy and gross. Lots of dog owners who shouldn’t be anywhere near a dog. Does the dog poo fine ever get enforced ? It should fall in the same category if it doesn’t already.

Irridescantshimmmer · 10/09/2024 10:02

I am NOT justifing throwing poo bags at trees its gross, I think people do it because they don't want to be walking about with it, it's no excuse to be honest but it may also mean that there may not be many pooh bins around.

I don't have a dog so I don't have the pleasure of picking up dog poo.

gillefc82 · 10/09/2024 10:08

Because they are inconsiderate arseholes, that are only marginally better than the irresponsible arsehole dog owners who don’t pick up after their dogs at all.

I have 3 large dogs, so with mine we’re talking dino sized poos. Is it pleasant having to spend the rest of a walk carrying a hot, stinky bag full of turd around with you? No. But I would never think it ok to just tie it up on a random tree - I take it home and bin or find a dog poo bin to put it in. No excuses.

evtheria · 10/09/2024 10:09

Here to find out the excuses 😤

PersephonePomegranate23 · 10/09/2024 10:12

Even if there are no bins and they 'intend' to pick them up on the way back, why should other members of the public be subjected to seeing dog shit hanging from the trees?

Don't like dealing with dog mess? Don't get a dog.

SnowFrogJelly · 10/09/2024 10:12

Never see any round here

Apart from on the poo bag trees

Another dog owner bashing thread 🙄

Only the dog owners who leave shit bags hanging in trees.

Presumably, the majority of dog owners do not do this, otherwise there would be nothing but dog shit swinging from the lower branches everywhere.

I nevee hang them from trees but sometimes I leave them in the undergrowth at the base of trees (in the middle of the fields I walk in) and collect them on the way back, eg if I'm going to lunch and the pub won't appreciate my luggage! But they're out of sight and I ALWAYS remember to collect them on the way back.

The thing is, when you are out with small children in the woods and the fields they run around everywhere. Even into the undergrowth around trees. They make dens etc. So you leaving little parcels of shit for them to discover is DISGUSTING.

amoreoamicizia · 10/09/2024 10:20

There should be a dog licence and the money should be used to fund dedicated dog poo bins and collectors.

They could also make it mandatory to register the DNA of all dogs and match it with poo that's been left, I believe this has been implemented somewhere already.

Ilovegoldies · 10/09/2024 10:22

I use one bag to pick up the poo and another to use as a little carrier bag. Then it goes in the wheelie bin at home.

cutiechops · 10/09/2024 10:23

I sometimes 'stick and flick' if way out in the countryside so the poo (not in a bag) can biodegrade in the brambles. I don't mean the sort of places kids play, I mean dense undergrowth or nettles. I know some hardliners will say you should never leave it anywhere and there's toxic compounds in the dog mess and the critters of the hedgerow don't like it but occasionally it's the most practical thing to do. I wouldn't dream of leaving it on a pavement, in a field, near water, up a tree etc.
Someone locally regularly leaves their dog's mess on the grass about 1 metre away from the dog poo bin - why on earth? Exactly how much dog crap is in landfill though?! Can't scientists come up with a secondary use for it?

ThePerkyDuck · 10/09/2024 10:25

That’s disgusting. To be honest I think if they are so lazy, just leave the shit on the ground. But no, let’s add a plastic bag on top to add to the problem of plastic pollution.

CuriousGeorge80 · 10/09/2024 10:27

Because they are rancid imbeciles.

I have a dog, love dogs. But people who do this are absolutely disgusting.

StoneTheCrone · 10/09/2024 10:32

A surprising number of people are disgusting.

I witnessed a human poo, left on a pile on toilet roll at the side of a country road the other day while out running. I went past a week later and it was still there, covered in flies.

I run past layby on a busy road where (presumably) men pee by the roadside. This summer when it hadn't rained, the stench of pee was overwhelming! 🤢 Yes, people can be disgusting and that's why there has to be enforcement of rules, fines or a DNA system. Dog owners won't resolve this themselves spontaneously, it's just not human nature.

IsThePopeCatholic · 10/09/2024 10:41

It’s disgusting. Entitled dog owners who resent having to pick up their dog’s shit.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 10/09/2024 10:43

There will be dog people who do this, who are reading this thread and won’t comment on why they do this.

No dog owner should walk past a tree / bush with hanging turds. If you are a dog owner and you see this, dispose of them ALL to redeem dog owners overall.

Otherwise you will be tarred with the same brush; dog ownership being antisocial and disgusting for the majority.

askmenow · 10/09/2024 10:54

I am sooo thoroughly FED UP of dog owners!!!

Many treat our country, surroundings and residents with disdain. There should be a LARGE licence fee to register dog ownership and thus pay for dog wardens.
Any unregistered dog removed, retained and rehomed if not claimed. Responsibility needs to be forcefully rammed home.

Hopefully all those irresponsible people who got dogs over lockdowns will dispense with that habit when their current purchase passes away and 10 years hence, perhaps things might improve.

I love animals but they are a responsibility not to be taken lightly.

Ghilliegums · 10/09/2024 11:34

I'm a dog owner and I'm the one going round picking up the plastic bags and putting them in my own bin so they don't cause harm to wildlife.
