To ask why people hang poo on trees?

HotCrossBunplease · 10/09/2024 08:01

This perplexes me. I can’t think of anything more disgusting than hanging a bag of shit on a tree. Yet they are everywhere.

Someone on here must know someone who does this. What is going through their heads when they do it? Is it a massive “fuck you” to society now expecting poo to be scooped up (I grew up in the 70s/80s when it was acceptable just to leave it on the pavement)?

Or do they think that somehow hanging it like a macabre bauble is what they are meant to do? Do they believe that the Faeces Fairy will come and clear the trees at night time?

Apparently they are going to pick up up later. It's gross.

They should get a Dicky bag and take it with them.

Are you saying that people shouldn’t post about things that they think are clearly an issue. We are talking about literal shit here.
If dog owners are being bashed, then best they start cleaning up their dogs shit. I can’t see it being an issue then

IsThisAVespa · 10/09/2024 11:42

My SIL (lives in the States) says there are businesses there that will send someone to your house at preagreed intervals, for a fee, to pick up the dogshit from your own backyard. Because there are dog owners who are too lazy even to clean up the shit from their own property! If they can't even be arsed to pick up the shit off their own lawns there's no hope of them caring enough about other people to pick it up from a public place and take it home with them.
Of course NADOALT but I don't think they're a small minority either. It's disgusting.

goneaway2 · 10/09/2024 11:45

I have a dicky bag to collect my dogs poops in before I find a bin. I've never seen anyone else with one and I rarely see other people carrying bags of poop but most of the time I have a poop filled bag with me so there's a lot of people not picking up/slinging the bags and not binning it.

Sorry, what do you mean “apart from on the poo bag trees”? Are you suggesting that there is such a thing as a tree where it is acceptable to leave bags of turds?

What do you think of the poster who said people hang them in her garden?

I should also add that not only have I seen them near me (London, mostly on trees near canals), I also noticed it being raised as a topic on the Archers yesterday. A citizen of Ambridge gathered all the ones left in trees round the village and piled them up on the village green to highlight the scale of the problem.

There will be dog people who do this, who are reading this thread and won’t comment on why they do this.

No dog owner should walk past a tree / bush with hanging turds. If you are a dog owner and you see this, dispose of them ALL to redeem dog owners overall.

Otherwise you will be tarred with the same brush; dog ownership being antisocial and disgusting for the majority.

So in the same way, if your a parent of teens and see antisocial behaviour then you must tell them off, if your a parent of younger children and you see others misbehaving, you must deal with that. If you are a parent and see other parents doing anything wrong you must step in. If you are a part of any organised religion and an atrocity happens in the name of that faith you must sort it yourself, all so your not tarred with the same brush, is this the sort of thing you mean?

Those are for carrying treats and the poo bag roll. haha

They aren't, they are called dicky bags.

Roryno · 10/09/2024 12:00

We live rurally and see this all the time. Even worse when it’s hung on a barbed wire fence and the wind blows it makes it catch on other bits so it’s a nightmare to remove. People that do this are disgusting, skanky people who shouldn’t have dogs. Near us there is actually a bin in the carpark where people start their walks from, so it’s no excuse that there’s no bin.

Half the problem is that a lot of people incapable of tying a decent knot in the bag. If the bag is tied tightly it usually won’t smell. If it does, put that bag inside a second bag and tie it up. I have a cafe for walkers, I let people put poo bags in the general bin, but ask them to tie it tightly. They all say they have, but some of them just do a loose “left over right” and throw them in the bin, which then stinks.

As for those that profess to be collecting them on the way back - most of you are liars. But even if you were doing that, you’re still leaving an ugly mess for everyone else to see on their walk. Would you leave your empty cone can or choc wrappers etc too? It’s simply unacceptable.

It's only dog owners that hang bags full of dog shit on my garden shrubs. It's not the dogs doing it, or people without dogs, it's the dog owners.
So I'll continue to say how fucking disgusting dog owners are, because they're the ones doing it and making me have to pick up and dispose of their dogs' shit.

Dog Walking Freedom: it's in the bag! - Dicky Bag
These are definitely for putting the poo in, not treats

Interesting. Never seen those before. Could be useful I guess but I'm happy to have them in hand. I knot the bag and it's all contained.

Snugglemonkey · 10/09/2024 09:32

I have had to change my babies on walks and in woods. This weekend we were out walking and my 1 year old started shouting "poo". I always carry pull ups and wipes. I put them in nappy sacks and put them back in my bag. Like a civilised person!

Thank you for doing that. People who leave nappies all over the place are disgusting.

NeedBiggerWindChimes · 10/09/2024 12:39

Paterson8080 · 10/09/2024 09:32

I went for a dog walk with a friend who bagged the poo, tied it up and then threw it in the bushes. I asked why and he said it is good for the plants - the bags are biodegradable. (But I have read that this is not true because dog food is full of chemicals).

I hate carrying bags of poo but that's the price you pay. I have read that post pandemic people don't like touching bin lids but that is a poor excuse.

I would like to hear from a dog owner who does this and thinks it is OK!

Dog food is full of chemicals? Where are you finding this dog food? I wouldn't buy that kind of thing for my dog. They get real food.

WorriedRelative · 10/09/2024 12:43

HotCrossBunplease · 10/09/2024 08:52

That’s interesting. When you say “the money is for your cause, not dog poo” can you clarify a bit? Your charity provides bins but that’s not its main purpose- so what does the charity/cause gain from putting the bins in place and managing the disposal, is it so you can put free publicity on them or something?

I thought most bins were provided by councils.

TBH I’m also a bit unclear of what is done with dog poo when it is taken home, does it just go in the general domestic bin, or with the food waste or what?

If the land is owned by the charity then the charity would have to provide the bins.

The National Trust, for example.

Likewise all those who own land with public access.

Should these organisations really have to waste money on providing bins for people who want to own a dog but can't be arsed to take its shit home?

Don't get a dog if you don't want to carry a bag of warm dog shit around and dispose of it responsibly at home.

No, I'm not dealing with other people's dog poo. My conscience is clear as I always pick up my dog poo. There's usually no bins where I walk them so mine go into a sealed container in the back of my car to come home with me. Not going to put the poo of other dogs in there. For all I know those dogs haven't been wormed, might have had a gastro bug I'll come in contact with and give to my dogs, etc. Not worth the risk or the vet bills.

SomethingFun · 10/09/2024 14:01

It is minging. I live somewhere with bins general and specific for dog poo about every 200 yards and there are still bags of dog shit everywhere. I agree, if you really don’t want to carry warm shit around with you that much then you can’t have a dog because you aren’t capable of looking after it. And I call bullshit (or dog shit) on the people who carefully put their dog shit bag down on their route to pick it back up again on the way back as I’ve never seen a bag move once it’s been dumped unless a community litter picker has taken one for the team and removed it.

Papyrophile · 10/09/2024 14:03

You are quite right @HotCrossBunplease; it is disgusting.

afaloren · 10/09/2024 14:08

It’s never occurred to me to do this and I think it’s bizarre. I keep a dedicated silicon bag in my dog walking kit and put the full (closed!) poo bags in there if there are no bins. I’ll find one eventually or worst case take it home!

Hapagirl48 · 10/09/2024 14:24

Yup totally grim. I have a dog and I take her on long walks, sometimes she poos right at the beginning of a walk and I take the bag with me in the hopes of finding a bin (best case scenario) or taking it home. Very often I don't walk in a loop so the whole "I'll pick it up on the way home" doesn't wash with me.

Toastghost · 10/09/2024 14:27

Some people only pick it up because they’re being watched so I assume it’s them. I have a couple of relatives who pretend to scoop/pretend not to notice the dog doing its business etc, whatever they can get away with at the time. They don’t like being shouted at by strangers but they will avoid carrying dog crap around if they can. Oddly enough they are very much against dropping litter in the usual sense.

I think most dog owners are more conscientious though! I don’t assume everyone walking a dog is like this.

GeraniumJenny · 10/09/2024 15:26

I have a little bag that has 3 separate containers. 1 for poo bags, 1 for used poo bags (bigger container) and 1 for treats. Hanging poo bags on trees is disgusting.

HotCrossBunplease · 10/09/2024 15:28

What is interesting is that buying the specialist bags you mention has never been easier with Amazon and Temu at everyone’s fingertips. I could understand in the days when people had to find stuff in shops that these things may have been harder to come by (though I bet they have them in Pets at home).

OP posts:
HotCrossBunplease · 10/09/2024 15:30

How bizarre. I mentioned an online Chinese retailer beginning with T in my reply, as a potential supplier of reasonably-priced specialist poo bags. Perhaps that triggers an auto-moderation.
