To think it’s okay to take certain things from a hotel?

I’m curious to know what people think about taking items from hotels. For example, I know things like toiletries (shampoos, soaps) are often seen as fair game, but what about things like mugs and glasses? I’ve stayed at a few places recently, and I was tempted by some of the nicer bits. Obviously, I didn’t take anything major, but it’s got me thinking - where’s the line? Is it stealing or part of the hotel experience?

AIBU to think it’s harmless to take certain things? Or shouldn’t all stay behind?

What do you think?

Good grief, no!

uhOhOP · 10/09/2024 01:02

What??? Yes, I think taking mugs and glasses counts as stealing.

Redglitter · 10/09/2024 01:02

Toiletries - part of the hotel experience
Mugs, glasses etc - stealing

ThatFlightyTemptress · 10/09/2024 01:02

Remote no, batteries yes 😂 Aaah Ross

PeachSloth · 10/09/2024 01:03

Cups and mugs is just straight stealing, only take one time use stuff if you must, shampoo, soaps, tea.

CheeseWisely · 10/09/2024 01:05

Tolietries. Tea Bags. Slippers if you must, and you've worn them during your stay (they're not used again).

PaillettenBedeckt · 10/09/2024 01:05

I'm not so fussed about a glass. It could just as easily have been broken.

I do think there's some things you shouldn't take. Taking the kettle would be a bit rich.

HarrytheHobbit · 10/09/2024 01:06

That's so scuzzy.

Meadowfinch · 10/09/2024 01:07

Just cheap !!

Theredfoxfliesatmidnight · 10/09/2024 01:09

Definitely not mugs and glasses! What are you thinking, that's proper stealing!

When I hear of people considering this I always wonder how they can be bothered with the actual logistics. You're away from home presumably, and you have to somehow wrap up securely and smuggle away in a suitcase a glass or mug that you could probably get for a quid or two anyway? And transport it miles home? What's the point!

I definitely think tea/coffee/ sugar sachets are fair game, as are any single use toiletries. Other than that, no. Also the hotel will have your card details anyway so will charge through the nose for anything you pinch 😁

Pantaloons99 · 10/09/2024 01:10

Come on. Get some standards. This is horrible.

MissedItByThisMuch · 10/09/2024 01:21

Are people really this crass? I mean clearly yes because hotels that have moved to big bottles of toiletries (most of them) have to lock them up to stop people taking them apparently.

It’s pretty fucking simple surely - single use free consumables, fair game. Everything else, not. Would you steal mugs and glasses from friends or family??

Also if it’s clear to them you’ve cleaned the place out you’ll find the cost of the things charged to your credit card.

Justsayit123 · 10/09/2024 01:25

little toiletries, maybe but mugs and glasses - are you having a laugh… wtf…

I've been in a couple of hotels where there's a price list in the bedroom for things like towels etc. - even bedlinen! They must be very fed up with light fingered guests.

ReadingSoManyThreads · 10/09/2024 01:29

It's theft, and some hotels will report you to the police for it (depending on the severity of course). Others will charge your credit card for what you've taken.

Honestly, you're shameless.

HolyPeaches · 10/09/2024 01:32

I’ve taken little shampoo bottles and bags of soap.

My dad on the other hand once stole some plates from the dining hall. My mum was mortified when she realised when they got home.

Ger1atricMillennial · 10/09/2024 01:33

Is it property?

Things that are not going to be used by the next guest i.e. toiletries- No

Things that can be cleaned and reused? Yes.

Abouttoblow · 10/09/2024 01:38

I think maybe hotels are not for you.
Stick to caravans (and leave everything where it is of course).
If you have no manners, best to stay at home, or, at a stretch, a caravan.
Just don't steal stuff..

StoryDory · 10/09/2024 01:39

Fyi - to unscrew the TV in a premier Inn, you need one of those torque screwdrivers.
Thank me later!

orangalang · 10/09/2024 01:44

I've taken home a shampoo too but once home I don't actually need or want it. If I was a bit richer to get a nice hotel I would hope I wasn't there to steal random crap. You can buy a cup for about a quid.

JanglingJack · 10/09/2024 01:46

I've never stayed anywhere nice enough that I'd want their toiletries, let alone glasses or mugs!

Mattress maybe, but I fell over trying to get it down the corridor. Just as I was being helped up, my nescafe sachets and sugar fell out from the kettle clutched under my other arm.
It was then that I realised that I needed a shower.

No @TakeOrLeaveIt . Leave it.

That did just make me chuckle!

TheCryingTheBitchAndTheFloordrobe · 10/09/2024 01:51

Toiletries, sewing kits, shoe cleaning sponges etc I do tend to take. I donate them to our local women’s shelter.

Quite. I don’t know why people bother to do this. If you can afford to stay in a hotel, you’re not struggling to afford shampoo are you? Why take a tiny half used bottle of a product you wouldn’t choose normally and risk it leaking all over your toilet bag, so you can have one shower/hair-wash at home with your sub-standard freebie?
