To think it’s okay to take certain things from a hotel?

TakeOrLeaveIt · 10/09/2024 01:00

I’m curious to know what people think about taking items from hotels. For example, I know things like toiletries (shampoos, soaps) are often seen as fair game, but what about things like mugs and glasses? I’ve stayed at a few places recently, and I was tempted by some of the nicer bits. Obviously, I didn’t take anything major, but it’s got me thinking - where’s the line? Is it stealing or part of the hotel experience?

AIBU to think it’s harmless to take certain things? Or shouldn’t all stay behind?

What do you think?

That's so scuzzy.

This.

Thievery. How can this even be a question???

PeloMom · 10/09/2024 03:21

Lately I don’t think you can take much. I stayed in the summer at a place where they had full size fancy toiletries and there was a note saying if any bottle is missing I’ll be charged £25 per bottle (the place was around £1000 a night ).

blahblahblah24 · 10/09/2024 03:22

Toiletry samples are fine. The other things are stealing.

I always take the hotel single use toiletries home - I donate them to our local homeless shelter. The clients there love them.

That doesn't make it ok.
Theft is theft.

If you want to donate toiletries, purchase them.

Hotels provide sundries for immediate use, not as takeaway.

LAMPS1 · 10/09/2024 03:27

The more people steal from a business the more the price goes up for everybody and the level of service comes down.

I hate the idea that stealing can be thought of as ‘part of the hotel experience’…that people should feel entitled to take what they want just because they can.
This blatant disregard for anybody except self is very concerning.

What the actual hell am i reading??

Really ?

Thats not ok.

Cups & Glasses? Why and how rude!

DeccaM · 10/09/2024 03:57

Do you also help yourself to the cups and glasses when you go to a restaurant? Or the silverware? You might as well take the tablecloth too.

I doubt this is a serious question, but on the off chance you’re genuinely wondering, of course you can’t just take whatever you fancy from a hotel.

DreamTheMoors · 10/09/2024 04:04

Why on god’s green earth would you want a hotel drinking glass?? They’re the cheapest things in the place - they aren’t Waterford or Tiffany for god’s sake.
Is it the thrill of stealing that you enjoy? Do you get off on pulling a fast one over on those mean hotels?
Leave it, @TakeOrLeaveIt.

Jellybeansweets · 10/09/2024 04:32

How on earth could you think taking the hotels glasses or mugs is appropriate? Toiletries and tea/coffee bags are fine and there to be consumed but surely not anything else?! I thought this was common knowledge!!

What did you take from the hotel room OP? You do realise that if they find things missing, the hotel is completely liable to bill you, right?

Surely this is a wind up, how could anyone think this is okay?! Genuinely shocked!

GreenTeaLikesMe · 10/09/2024 04:58

I don’t take unopened toiletries either - unopened ones are not routinely binned.

I would take any toiletries or biscuits which I had opened and which were unfinished.

Generally, though, I don’t need more clutter in my life.

As for taking mugs and classes, seriously? Horrid behavior.

daisychain01 · 10/09/2024 04:59

I'm sad for you that you don't have a moral compass if you don't know what constitutes stealing. What has life come to!

the absolutely shame of a hotel billing me because I'd stolen items from them, makes me cringe very very hard. No wonder they bolt picture to the wall in some hotels with people like the OP around.

Zanatdy · 10/09/2024 05:19

I don’t even take shampoo. I travel often, I have no temptation to steal things from a hotel. Glasses etc? Why would you? Do a reverse google search and purchase some if you like them

WiddlinDiddlin · 10/09/2024 05:32

Oh come on, there is a line...

Consumables - little bottles of shower gel or tea/coffee/biscuits - sure, thats what they're there for.

A few extra sausages for breakfast for a snack later - sailing closer to the wind but it's still well covered by the price you paid for the room and breakfast, particularly for those of us who would LOVE a pastry, coffee AND a full English but absolutely cannot eat all that at hotel breakfast time (but could at 1pm), and even more understandable if you're trapped on the hotel grounds and really can't go elsewhere for food.

Taking glasses, mugs, towels, etc... you're taking the fucking piss and, as they have your card details on file, you're almost certainly going to pay for them anyway! Just be honest and ask to buy them if you like them THAT much.

TheMarzipanDildo · 10/09/2024 05:32

That’s a pain in the arse for the housekeepers. Don’t do it!

Corinthiana · 10/09/2024 05:33

Fgs why would you steal mugs and glasses? Get to IKEA.

LunaNorth · 10/09/2024 05:39

I was once sorely tempted by the pillows in a hotel in Majorca. I’ve spent my life searching for the ‘right’ pillow, and these were it!

I asked the hotel for the name of the supplier instead, and about a year later finally managed to track them down!

Life changing.

DecafGreen · 10/09/2024 05:40

I can't imagine anything more humiliating than being approached by hotel staff in reception for stealing. In any case, the mugs and glasses in the rooms are pretty tiny so who would want them anyway?

The only thing that ever comes home with me from the room, when i go away for work, is the complimentary packet of 2 biscuits, which I give to my son when I get home.

As an aside, when I was in hospital giving birth I was told by staff that people were constantly stealing pillows, tv remote controls, batteries. Pretty much anything that isn't screwed down.

stripybobblehat · 10/09/2024 05:41

I like it when there's a notebook and pencil but no, not the mugs

Threewheeler1 · 10/09/2024 05:48

Tomorrowjustyouwaitandsee · 10/09/2024 03:06

I was staying in an air BnB in Suffolk recently and the owner was really upset because the previous “guest” had taken two lovely bedside lamps.

That's bloody awful! What is wrong with people, thieving sods!? 😮

Threewheeler1 · 10/09/2024 05:50

Didn't Liz Truss steal a bathrobe from a hotel?
Figures.

Starseeking · 10/09/2024 05:53

I don't take anything home from hotels, as I bring everything I need with me.

If someone felt they had to go home with something I'd say single use toiletries and slippers that come in a plastic wrap (as they won't be used again).

Anything reusable will be washed and used again by the hotel, so if you take it home, it is stealing.

PussGirl · 10/09/2024 06:01

My friend decants some of the toiletries from the pump dispensers into a smaller bottle she brings for the purpose! I think that’s not on.

I take the packets of biscuits if they’re nice ones and the shower caps.

InSpainTheRain · 10/09/2024 06:04

If I have started the toiletries I will take them. Anything else - no definitely not!

Auburngal · 10/09/2024 06:09

Pen and notepad
Certain toiletries. Noticed now some hotels use wall fixed soap dispenser type things for shower gel/conditioner/shampoo or bottles stuck in a holder.
Sugar - for workspeople, visitors who take sugar in tea/coffee
