To think it’s okay to take certain things from a hotel?

I’m curious to know what people think about taking items from hotels. For example, I know things like toiletries (shampoos, soaps) are often seen as fair game, but what about things like mugs and glasses? I’ve stayed at a few places recently, and I was tempted by some of the nicer bits. Obviously, I didn’t take anything major, but it’s got me thinking - where’s the line? Is it stealing or part of the hotel experience?

AIBU to think it’s harmless to take certain things? Or shouldn’t all stay behind?

What do you think?

I spend half my life in hotels for work. This is obvious surely?
The rule is.

  • you can take things you could completely used up as part of your stay or will be chucked out if part used: mini toiletries, shower hat, sewing kit, sanitary bags, disposable one use slippers, notebooks, pens, all the teas, coffees and sugars and complimentary biscuits and water. Arguably you could fill your boots with bog paper too if you are that way inclined and have a long journey with a dicky tummy or are prone to spillage. I've also taken the laundry bag when I've had rained on clothes that would be going into my suitcase wet.
  • you can also take anything that has a price displayed on it: contents of mini bar, robes, towels etc as they will just charge you (a fuck tonne) for it.
  • you cannot take anything that is designed to be part of the room, reused or washed and replaced; crockery, televisions, wall art, full size bottles of toiletries, bed, bed linen, kettle, toilet basin, rugs, pillows, iron, ironing board, safe, hairdryer, desk, chairs, cushions etc. Also robes and towels if there isn't an indication of price. Even so they are likely to notice and charge you anyway. Who the fuck wants to pay through the nose for a wet, industrial use, used towel?

It is yet unknown whether you are allowed to take the bible. I'm a heathen so I'd say yes if it's to destroy it.

HTH.

Still a thief, if you've taken more than the shampoo and soap. But usually the toiletries are crappy, and not what I like to use. And it's not as if decent shampoo is expensive to buy, rather than take stuff from hotels. If it's nice (like the hotel chain which stocks Le Labo products in their rooms) then of course use it, but most hotel toiletries are not as nice as my own.

But honestly @TakeOrLeaveIt , are you so poor that you need to steal glasses from a hotel?

ThePrologue · 10/09/2024 06:28

It's all theft.
The toiletries are there for use at the time; bottles are refilled. Although granted, these are generally fair game. However, anything else if theft.
As is using work stuff for personal use; your work biro suddenly at home? Theft
Couple of envelopes for personal use? Theft
Eating food from ward food trolley? Theft

notprincehamlet · 10/09/2024 06:30

Yeah because what is a hotel stay if not an opportunity to add to one's trouser-press collection? Hmm

ChristmasFluff · 10/09/2024 06:31

I take the little toiletries if they are a decent brand, so I have a supply for hotel stays - they never leave my suitcase uless I use them. Some hotels don't have nice toiletries, so it's good to not have to take my own full size bottles. I also take the sewing kits and shoe shine as both come in very useful at times. I never have left-pver biscuits!

Everyting else, why bother? I don't want tea bags or sugar etc, as you can always ask for more at hotels if you want them, and I have plenty at home. I certainly wouldn't consider taking anything non-disposable.

Surely it's obvious what it's ok to take? There's something weird about people who somehow have to 'get everything they've paid for'. It's never the poorest either. We had a friend who would always empty any bowls of mints or peanuts etc into a container kept in her bag especially for that purpose. We secretly called it her E-Coli supplies.

reluctantbrit · 10/09/2024 06:31

I stayed in a hotel which had a rubber duck on the towel stack with a note "take me". That's a complimentary gift and he sits now in our bathroom as a souvenir.

I sometimes take the toileteries, we have several one night stays soon and will stay at Holiday Inn etc so it's nice to have decent stuff and not bringing a full bottle.

I work in finance and we had a customer who did the hotel toileteries. There is a huge difference in their quality but some of the stuff with the hotel logo is equal to branded items, the hotel chains just want their names on it for advertising.

Luio · 10/09/2024 06:32

A lot of hotels have introduced a price list and just charge you if you take anything.

JoJothegerbil · 10/09/2024 06:38

Hotel room consumables are fair game. Fixtures and fittings are most definitely not. Why would you steal hotel glasses? Odd.

MoveItOnUp · 10/09/2024 06:43

Are you really that desperate for a mug?

Lovelysummerdays · 10/09/2024 06:50

I think single use consumables are fair game. I’ve worked in a hotel as a chambermaid and it’s easier to clean a bathroom that’s been cleaned out to ge fair. Just wipe and get a fresh stack of bottles. Other wise you have to move them anyway, double check the tiny writing as shampoo and showergel are identical and haven’t been opened with a tiny bit used. Half the time I’d have to bin unopened soap as the paper on Arran aromatics goes wrinkly and will discolour if it’d been splashed.

I take coffee/ tea too as handy for camping. If no one did it we’d be playing Russian roulette with Uht milk. I also like hotel slippers no idea why.

Philandbill · 10/09/2024 06:53

I didn't know the toiletries bottles are refilled @ThePrologue. You learn something every day. Who does the refilling? Hotel staff or back to the manufacturer?

Hotel staff. They have big bottles of cheap toiletries to fill small bottles!
Not all hotels do this of course (well, I hope!)

Lostil · 10/09/2024 06:56

@ThatFlightyTemptress the salt shaker… no no no. The salt? yes yes yes

RampantIvy · 10/09/2024 06:57

I don't think I have ever stayed in a hotel where I liked the toiletries. Even when they were Molton Brown I didn't like the smell.

I always take my own as I prefer soap to shower gel/bodywash, and the shampoo is always rank.

I have taken biscuits and sachets of hot chocolate though.

Anything else is just stealing.

BusyMum47 · 10/09/2024 06:57

Redglitter · 10/09/2024 01:02

Toiletries - part of the hotel experience
Mugs, glasses etc - stealing

This! Obviously!! ⬆️

YoYoYoYo12345 · 10/09/2024 06:57

Don't be so cheap @TakeOrLeaveIt

If you can afford a hotel, you can afford to.buy your own mug, glass and miniature toiletries.

MoveItOnUp · 10/09/2024 06:43

😂 I know it's a bit tacky isn't it.

EI12 · 10/09/2024 07:00

Not unless it is clearly stated on the item - like on a beach bag it says 'enjoy it at the beach or take home as a souvenir'.

montelbano · 10/09/2024 07:00

The only items I would take are the little sewing kits and the single use toothpaste and toothbrush. Both really useful to slip into your handbag or keep in a suitcase.
However thanks for the tip about using shower caps to cover dirty shoes in your suitcase.

Dragonsandcats · 10/09/2024 07:00

Mini bottles of toiletries, soap, drink sachets etc yes— of course you can’t take mugs, glasses or towels or anything like that.

mitogoshi · 10/09/2024 07:00

Only things designed for 1 time use so any remaining single use shampoo, a tea bag or coffee sachet you didn't use, the mini sewing kit .

Rewis · 10/09/2024 07:03

Things that are single use can be taken.

QueenHilda · 10/09/2024 07:04

What?!

Consumables are just that (not ‘fair game’), tea, coffee, biscuits, shampoo etc are all there to be used.

Cups and glasses are not consumable though and if you take them you are a theif!

JanglingJack · 10/09/2024 07:06

Threewheeler1 · 10/09/2024 05:50

Didn't Liz Truss steal a bathrobe from a hotel?
Figures.

Maybe she forgot she was wearing it. Similar to when Cameron forgot he had a child and left them at the pub.

These things are so easily done. I'll have nothing bad said about those wanky Tories.
