To think it’s okay to take certain things from a hotel?

I’m curious to know what people think about taking items from hotels. For example, I know things like toiletries (shampoos, soaps) are often seen as fair game, but what about things like mugs and glasses? I’ve stayed at a few places recently, and I was tempted by some of the nicer bits. Obviously, I didn’t take anything major, but it’s got me thinking - where’s the line? Is it stealing or part of the hotel experience?

AIBU to think it’s harmless to take certain things? Or shouldn’t all stay behind?

What do you think?

Returned from holiday on Thursday and only things I took from room were a pen and the laundry bag. Great for putting shoes inside suitcase and I used bags from another hotels (turned inside out) for dirty washing.

Mugs, glasses, good grief no, and you were tempted by the nicer bits?

What would those be, robes, ornaments, towels cusions, out and out stealing in my mind to take those.

However single use toiletries (shower caps great for the soles of your shoes when packing) and fancy tea/coffee I do take and thats fine and have been given extra to take home by staff who noticed I used a certain tea a lot, but I have also purchased new robes (who on earth wants used towels/robes) and a certain hotel brand leaves items for guests to take ie a small bear. I stayed in said brand not so long ago and no bear but a rubber duck, I asked at reception if I could take it, oh course you can and thank you for asking was the reply, also fancy coffee bags were given as gifts.

I remember one hotel who were sick of people pinching the fancy small bedside clock, so they started selling them, its something that would never enter my head.

I want to stay at a hotel that gives you a little bear or a rubber duck!

The only time I really wanted the small toiletries from a hotel was at Disney. They were really nice, and they left extras in our room so we could take home a small bottle of each thing they offered as an extra souvenir. Other than those disposable things, no. Anything else is stealing.

The poster with the mattress and coffee pot, etc. --that was funny! Thanks!😆

Yet you could afford to stay at a hotel for a wedding? And no doubt, travel to get there, a new outfit and a gift? I’ve had times in my life when I was broke and if I’d been invited to a wedding I would have declined because I couldn’t have afforded any of these things.

Don't worry. I am sure someone will mention "They never took a tea bag nor pack of sugar home" in your eulogy. Be proud.

Meanwhile, I will take the disposable things I might actually have used and the tea bags if I choose, but promise to leave the mattress, toilet and tub for the next guest. I'll just skip having anyone give me a eulogy.

I always take the bathroom stuff (as said before my current workplace has a box where we all place them and it gets taken to women’s shelter periodically).

Is this not taking the piss a bit?

Hotels do charge higher prices to cover the cost of the toiletries they provide.
So if you clean them out every time you stay - even if it's for a good cause - aren't you basically getting others to subsidise your charity donation? Without asking them if they're ok with that?

I mean you can buy toiletries to donate. Why don't you just do that?

Sorry, but it just seems wrong somehow, even though I'm all for supporting shelters.
Well-meaning but in CF territory all the same.

Hhhmmm..they could reduce the prices for their hotels by not offering the teabags, sugar packets and toiletries, yet, they don't. I wonder why?

Next time you go to a hotel, tell them that you want a discount, as you don't plan to use or take any of their amenities. Then let us know how it goes and how big your discount was. Then, I'll take your opinion seriously.

Good Lord! If you’re so poor that you have to take sachets of horrible instant coffee, maybe stop eating out.

Actually, she said she takes the two sugars they invariably stick on the saucer. You'd rather they go into a landfill? Because they are going into the garbage when the table is bussed. Ditto for any little jellies, creamers, butters, etc.

Actually, don't answer that.

I might take a shampoo if I really liked it but certainly wouldn’t be taking glasses etc. Just google reverse image search them and buy some. I remember when we were coming from the Dominican republic the hotel staff made a guest open her case as we were about to board the bus to the airport and she took out a big blanket. I laughed so much, then found myself sitting next to her on the flight home. She was lovely, not sure why you’d nick a blanket if you can afford 2wks in the Dominican over Christmas!!

HotHotChilli · 09/06/2025 09:00

@AnnoyedAsAllHeck If you stay in a Conrad, different places around the world they give you different gifts, the small bear used to be always a standard.

I have a camel from Conrad Dubai, a elephant from Conrad Bangkok as well. But now some hotels are charging for the said animals, unless a certain membership tier.......

Missey85 · 09/06/2025 09:02

No those things are stealing! It's not a free shop!

Packetofcrispsplease · 09/06/2025 09:03

I don’t usually take any of the hotel toiletries as I don’t like their shampoo or shower gel anyway too fragranced and the shampoo makes my wavy hair go stupid looking 😂
I take my own things when I’m away .
I use up the hotel teabags though but don’t take any home with me
If someone brings me a coffee with 2 sugar sachets on the side I pop them in my handbag as does one other poster above .
I don’t take sugar in my hot drinks and no one who visits me takes sugar .
i often find trades people take 2 sugars in their tea or coffee so use them for that .
why not ? Same as the little wrapped biscuits one local cafe gives with a hot coffee .
I don’t like those particular biscuits so pop it in my bag and my youngest has it .

@Pam100127 what do you do when guests have stolen items? Can you/ do you charge them or reflect it in a review?
It's so dreadful of them !

Well, I'm in the US, so no chance of me ever getting to any of those places but I wouldn't care if I had to buy them. The camel and elephant sound so cute! Is there anywhere to see a picture?

Sorry to all for veering off topic, but I love stuffies. blush

My friend decants some of the toiletries from the pump dispensers into a smaller bottle she brings for the purpose! I think that’s not on.

I take the packets of biscuits if they’re nice ones and the shower caps.

And pointless!
I suspect that no matter whether the label on the dispenser is a fancy toiletry brand, the actual contents will be topped up from the big cheap bulk shampoo packs they get from hospitality suppliers.
