AIBU to think I will never get a refill for my (£620) pen?

I have a few pens that I use, one of my favourite being my Chopard Brescia. The pen still sells on Chopard's website, but I am finding it hard to source refills for it.

www.chopard.com/en-gb/rollerball-pen/95013-0439.html

I'm in a bit of a panic now as I installed my last cartridge for it today. It writes lovely, but worried as have ran out of refills for it now. I normally use a Parker Duofold or Cross Townsend for day-to-day use, and my Brescia normally only comes out when signing important things (quite sentimental!).

Does anyone have ideas as to where I can source refills for the Brescia? I can't seem to see them for sale on Chopard's own website, and Selfridges didn't have any in stock when I visited recently.

Lots of people have niche obsessions. My sister spent £1,000 on a plate for her collection of posh plates. It doesn't make the food taste any better, to be honest, she would have a fit if I even suggested eating off of it.

Arlobaby · 09/09/2024 09:16

Why do people lose their heads on here when someone spends a lot of money on something?

patchworkbear · 09/09/2024 09:19

Ignore the trolls@MelanieD29- there's nothing wrong with owning luxury goods, whatever they may be. I have a cross pen from my graduation that I only use for special occasions as I can't justify the cost of refills 😂 actually, come to think of it, I think it's a fountain pen- I need to check! Feeling inspired after this thread :)

I have bought some beautiful brown ink cartridges for my ink pen. It looks gorgeous on cream paper!

Ooooh, I want brown ink now!

Bjorkdidit · 09/09/2024 09:26

It always amuses me how on MN people can openly talk about buying the right house, with a bedroom for each child, large enough to fit a double bed, in the right location near where they work and the right schools, and furnish it from John Lewis as if it's a perfectly normal thing to do, accessible to anyone.

But then someone mentions spending a few hundred pounds on a pen, and the thread is derailed by the cost of the pen.

Pookerrod · 09/09/2024 09:53

OP, I’m genuinely interested and not at all being snarky (as I probably spend a lot of money on things that other people would find wasteful) but what writing do you do where you have a couple of pens for day to day use plus this special pen for special documents that you still use so often that you’re worried about future supply of cartridges?

On the rare occasion that I need to physically sign something, I have to hunt my house for a pen and usually end up getting one from kids school bags.

Are you a writer who prefers to do it old school? Are you a big journal writer? Genuinely interested…

I want to post a photo of my penis to show the op but I'm too scared.
I love a good pen

The trouble with non-standard colours is that they typically only come in standard nib sizes - I like a fine (ballpoint) nib, so I only seem to be able to find black and blue.

Even red only seems to come in medium for the Parkers.

That is quite the autocorrect (if that is what it is!).

Yep you should be scared to post a photo of your penis online ….. This thread is now going to take a very different turn due to this comment 😂😂😂

LonginesPrime · 09/09/2024 10:06

Wokeuptired you'd probably get fewer complaints if you did post a dick pic on this thread - pens are a definite no no...

hilariousnamehere · 09/09/2024 10:10

Not rtft but Schmidt easy flow 9000 are my favourite refills ever, and I also have a cross Townsend but the fountain pen version 😁 look at Cult Pens, they should have refills which fit Cross and they're very helpful if you're unsure.

Wokeuptired · 09/09/2024 10:12

Ffs my pens, how do I edit?
I'm female and even though I have grown a few penis' in my life I have never owned one, pens are a different matter.

SphinxOfBlackQuartz · 09/09/2024 10:16

I tell you what: I'd rather spend £620 on a pen than a penis Grin

My my. I've bought cars for £620 in my time 😂

What is it about a £600 pen that makes it worth £600? Not snarky, genuinely curious.

You should spend time with people who like fountain pens - I've not spent that much, my most expensive pen was £200 and it was a gift from DH, most of mine are below £30, but many have multiple pens over £800 or a £1000.

In that case, different, high end materials, gold nib perhaps plus the good old paying for the brand name lead to a higher price.

And sometimes they are literal works of art, such as the high end Japanese Maki-e pens.

You can get bottles of ink in art shops rather than cartridges.

Sorry I have fountain pens on my mind, I realise you mean biro refills.

Come to think of it I don't think I have seen them in fancy colours wither.

Why not?

People who are offended by OP could indeed read the room and not click on a thread they’re going to get upset at.

Mumsnet isn’t a single room tailored to suit the sensibilities of those struggling financially. It’s open to those from all walks of life, including the wealthy.

Edited

Completely agree!
I hate this thing on MN where anyone who spends a penny more that bare basics is insensitive and needs to read the room 😒
Guess what? Some people have more money!
I wouldn't spend 600+ quid on a pen, because that's not what I appreciate - but OP does so that's OK. I bought a handbag for 2k+ to treat myself, I saved for it and I had the money so I spent it on what I wanted.

Natwestbit · 09/09/2024 10:58

I bet there are people commenting negatively on owning expensive pens who would buy handbags for the same price if they could.
There's something very satisfying about lovely stationery isn't there Op? A good pen can be enjoyed regardless of the standard of our handwriting. 😂😂

I wonder if all the sneery reverse snobs act like that when they see people with expensive things in day to day life? Anytime someone drives a nice car, has a designer bag, watch? Perhaps it’s the anonymity of Mumsnet that makes people comfortable to take their jealousy out on those more fortunate. Can’t see them walking up to someone driving an Audi and say “hahaha they saw you coming! I’m using the bus!”

Well...if the Audi owner walked up to me and said 'I'm really struggling to find tyres for my car which I spent £75k on, can you help me?!' - then yes, I may well tell him that I thought he was crazy.

Im not jealous of either. Just mind boggled. As someone similarly disinterested in both posh cars and posh pens I really struggle to wrap my head around where these people feel the value is.

But if the Audi owner stood in the street and asked the world in general where to get tyres then those who know could stop and answer, others could walk on by - that's more akin to MN post. The OP hasn't accosted any MNers for their sole opinion.

For those wanting nice pens to write with:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B078216GPJ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I'd seen a TikTok where someone was extolling the virtue of these pens, then the comments were all backing it up. Being the easily influenced person I am, I bought a box and now use them exclusively.

Hadn't mentioned anything to DH, but one day he needed a pen, so passed him one. He wrote his name on a form and said "wow - what pen is this?! It's amazing - my writing looks so neat!"

From someone that writes like a spider crawled through an ink pad and across the page, this is high praise indeed!

(Sorry - definitely off tangent!)

Oh my life I laughed A LOT 😁😁😁 ‘grown a few penis’’ 😁😁😁 I bet the owner of those penis’ were very grateful to you 🤭🤭🤭

ChampaignSupernova · 09/09/2024 11:19

Out of curiosity what do you keep your pens in when not in use? I can't imagine ever buying a £600 pen but if I did I would probably store them in a safe rather then pencil case 😂

LonginesPrime · 09/09/2024 11:20

Thanks anyway, sashh.

My dad always used bottled ink and had beautiful handwriting, but fountain pens have been my personal nemesis since primary school!

I've just looked it up and apparently it's possible to refill ballpoint refill cartridges with a syringe, but it sounds like a massive faff and I'm not sure I'm that desperate for brown handwriting!
