To ask if you have medium to long length hair what you do with it to sleep

I'm clearly dim and missing a trick despite having the same hair cut for nearly 40 years. Not far below shoulder length wavy hair. Thanks to young kids, my hair in the day is nearly always in a claw grip clip to get it away from my face. At night I let it down because I obviously can't sleep with a clip, but my god my hair pisses me off. In the summer, unbearable, sticks to me. Last night, tickles me. And I wake up looking like a mess. Don't do hairbands as they leave a kink, or if left loose, fall out. I always shower in the evening, let it dry naturally. I am up and down all night with the kids, and also toss and turn A LOT so anything that requires me to sleep (spooned) gracefully like a movie star is absolutely out of the question. But I'm kind of sick of waking up looking like I haven't washed or brushed it. Also showers in the morning would be impossible. Oh and I have the technical skill with anything hair and make up as a donkey with boxing gloves 😁

Thanks I'm advance!

Twist it up, bun on top of head.

ihatemyhouse · 07/09/2024 22:27

Nothing exciting but I just have a silk scrunchie and put it in a bun with that and it doesn’t ruin it too much for the next day

Idontevenknowmyname · 07/09/2024 22:27

Soft scrunchy works for me. If you’re putting it up in a claw grip surely any kink in the hair won’t show anyway? Mines wavy anyway so makes no odds.

mynameiscalypso · 07/09/2024 22:27

You are me! I straighten my hair every morning. Or use my straighteners to try and make it look like effortless natural waves rather than what my DS once called a lion's mane. So I just tie it up really and sort the kinks out. I am very envious of people who wake up and their hair looks exactly like they did when they went to sleep.

Thisisthedawningoftheageofaquarius · 07/09/2024 22:27

I put mine in a high loose bun; allows me to sleep without hair annoying me and has a nice wave in the morning ( on top of my head)

Octonaut4Life · 07/09/2024 22:28

I put in a loose braid overnight, way more comfy than a bun!

Narmelleth · 07/09/2024 22:28

I just braid mine sometimes. I part in the middle and have one braid on each side.

AffIt · 07/09/2024 22:28

I have long curly hair and wear a silk sleep bonnet - mostly to protect my curls (curly hair is more brittle than straight hair and it helps mitigate breakage) but the principle is the same, I'm sure.

Mine is from Silke and while it wasn't cheap, it's still going strong after four years!

Putmeinsummer · 07/09/2024 22:29

I have to have it down and I just pull it behind/above my head towards the headboard so it's not around my shoulders/near my face.

SoupDragon · 07/09/2024 22:29

I use a scrunchie and just put it in a high ponytail.

TomatoSandwiches · 07/09/2024 22:29

Goess in a silk bonnet or silk scrunchies if too hot, very comfortable and less hair breakage.

BrownOwlknowsbest · 07/09/2024 22:29

Well, mine is waist length and it goes into a loose plait at night.

Gorgeousfeet · 07/09/2024 22:31

Always tied up. My husband can’t stand my hair near him in bed and calls it the mop .. 🙄😂

@Gorgeousfeet 🤣🤣 I feel like that!!. I wake up and I feel entangled in my own hair and then the rage sets in..I have no idea why it irritates me so much. Maybe because in the day I have to get it away from my face, and toddlers grabby hands!

I also have no idea why this is a lost/difficult concept for me to resolve. Maybe I've just reached an age when my tolerance for anything shite is very minimal

@TomatoSandwiches - a "silk bonnet" indeed, one of the best 21st Century suggestions I've read on MN it is. Do you make your own or do you purchase them from a fine Bonateer, China or?

BiscuitlyBoyle · 07/09/2024 22:34

Just tied back in a low pony tail, but then I have the straightest hair it’s possible to have and any kink just falls out

YeahWellWhyNot · 07/09/2024 22:34

I thought about a silk pillowcase but always thought it would look odd on the bed..I mean we buy sets but maybe we're just old fashioned / cheap!

Mine is sittable-on length. I braid it overnight. When it was above waist level I didn't bother, it brushed out easily in the morning.

Thank you for explaining sleep bonnets. I’ve seen them mentioned on here and advertised but I’ve never understood why.

TulipTuesday · 07/09/2024 22:36

I tie mine in a low ponytail. I wash my hair every morning though so don’t worry about any kinks.

mutleyschuckle · 07/09/2024 22:38

Mines half way down my back but quite fine. I plait it but not with a band at the top. Just secure at the bottom so I'm not lying on a bobble. A few strands come loose through the night but it's easy to brush through in the mornings before it gets scraped back for work

Nothanks17 · 07/09/2024 22:40

I use a silk pillow and before I put my head down on the pillow I scoop my hair (no bobble) and literally placed it above my head and no problems

Doggymummar · 07/09/2024 22:42

Bunches, a plait, bun loads of different styles

Mrmagnoliahasonlyoneboot · 07/09/2024 22:42

I too use a clip all day everyday and can totally relate to the rage when your hair is in your face or being grabbed 😬 I sleep with my hair in a silk scrunchie, it does slip out a bit in the night but I just put it back up if it does, I’m up at least 4 times between children and it works pretty well (the scrunchie, not the relentless night wakes!)
