To ask if you have medium to long length hair what you do with it to sleep

I'm clearly dim and missing a trick despite having the same hair cut for nearly 40 years. Not far below shoulder length wavy hair. Thanks to young kids, my hair in the day is nearly always in a claw grip clip to get it away from my face. At night I let it down because I obviously can't sleep with a clip, but my god my hair pisses me off. In the summer, unbearable, sticks to me. Last night, tickles me. And I wake up looking like a mess. Don't do hairbands as they leave a kink, or if left loose, fall out. I always shower in the evening, let it dry naturally. I am up and down all night with the kids, and also toss and turn A LOT so anything that requires me to sleep (spooned) gracefully like a movie star is absolutely out of the question. But I'm kind of sick of waking up looking like I haven't washed or brushed it. Also showers in the morning would be impossible. Oh and I have the technical skill with anything hair and make up as a donkey with boxing gloves 😁

Thanks I'm advance!

I just have mine loose. It's never occurred to me to do anything else. I wash it every other morning but on the in-between ones, it's always fine. I just brush it.

Plaits or twists and a satin bonnet of I plait a hair scarf into the braid and tie the hair on top of my head like a medieval style using the bits of the scarf that poke out at the ends.

RaininSummer · 07/09/2024 23:16

Loose plait and then tucked up into the elastic on my sleep mask. #I'mtoosexyin mybed

TheHateIsNotGood · 07/09/2024 23:18

Are they actually Bonnets which tie under the chin, with maybe a little peak to add some shade or charm? Or are they really just Caps?

Either way, can you get matching silk nightclothes to give a bit of a style 'edge' to create an ensemble? I hope so as in my mind it seems more Hilda Ogden, nightcream and curlers.

Radiat · 07/09/2024 23:18

Messy bun using a scrunchie. My hair’s poker straight and doesn’t kink/hold a curl, so it doesn’t really matter what I do with it, as long as it’s off my neck at night.

AmyLovesAutumn · 07/09/2024 23:21

I have waist length hair and it’s put into a satin bonnet otherwise it annoys me and DH lies on it during the night. It gets very knotted too and takes me ages to brush if I don’t.

fost · 07/09/2024 23:23

my hair is very long (thigh length). I use a silk pillowcase, and chuck the whole lot of my hair up and over the pillow. some of it likely falls down the back of the bed as I have a metal bed frame rather than a solid headboard.

Thistooshallpass24 · 07/09/2024 23:28

Are most replying with long hair, naturally long or extensions?! My hair is like toddler hair! All silky with no hold , hair bobbles slip out, it doesn't keep a parting and it doesn't seem to grow ( I'm attempting to grow it)

@TomatoSandwiches - a "silk bonnet" indeed, one of the best 21st Century suggestions I've read on MN it is. Do you make your own or do you purchase them from a fine Bonateer, China or?

Wowww, please tell me this is just mortifying ignorance and not outright racism??

Milkand2sugarsplease · 07/09/2024 23:36

Mines down past my waist and I plait it overnight. If I don't I end up pulling my own hair by lying on it and then trying to turn over!!

Bangwam1 · 07/09/2024 23:45

If I dared go to bed with moist hair, I’d turn scarecrow!! My hair has some curls underneath/straightish on top, turns to frizz, pissed me off for 30 odd years. This is what I’ve learnt.

I wash it about once a week and it’s turned from a frizzy mess to lovely. As long as you brush your hair you will find it stays clean and adapts to less soap. Shampoo is not good for hair, it’s detergent.

Cover hair with shower cap during showers and cover hair in rain, anything to keep moisture out, humidity is killer to soft nice hair. Keep your hair out of the hot sun, it does a lot of damage (very important). Use a loose comb to brush it, brushing slowly working through knots starting from the bottom so you don’t create damage.

And put it in a loose pony tail above your head with a silk wrap/turban to hold it all in for bed.

That’s my little routine that’s worked, hope it helps someone 😊

I just braid mine sometimes. I part in the middle and have one braid on each side.

I did this when my hair was long enough to do so.

very loose braids, starting below the skull.

I just have my hair loose, and use a silk pillow I hardly ever wear it up and certainly couldn't at night.

DrinkElephants · 07/09/2024 23:59

I leave it down. It’s messy and knotty in the morning but far worse if I’ve tied it up in anyway. Plaits are the worst it’s like I’ve literally tied my hair in double knots!!! It’s strange cuz I used to swear by plaits to keep hair not knotty at night but recently (maybe having a baby) my hair has changed and is more brittle.

Bollihobs · 08/09/2024 00:00

Plaits. Mine is longer than yours OP and I couldn't sleep with it loose, it would just be impossible.

Likewise except I'm an evening washer. It has to be thoroughly dried else it might get odd kinks if a bit gets under my head.
As I'm just about to settle down now I'll take note of what, if anything I do...
Ok, just tuck it back behind my ears and down my back, side sleeper. It's straight and quite silky, I guess that helps.

gano · 08/09/2024 00:02

I have long straight hair, and I tie it in a loose ponytail at the nape of my neck. I use a thin hair tie, so it doesn't feel bulky.
Dd has her hair in a single plait for sleeping. She has naturally wavy hair. The plait prevents it from getting tangled, and she likes that it enhances her waves.

TheHateIsNotGood · 08/09/2024 00:18

@ShinyPebble32 - where the actual fuck do you find "racism" in my post. A bit of light-hearted piss taking, very possibly, but you are way off base.

doodleygirl · 08/09/2024 00:25

I use a silk scrunchie and tie mine in a loose pony tail. I have two silk bonnets but I can’t wear them, they make my head hot and itchy. Also have a silk pillowcase

Silk bonnets are heavily rooted in black culture as they're used to protect their unique hair texture from breakage and matting while sleeping.

Giggorata · 08/09/2024 00:28

My hair varies from curly to frizzy to wavy and is also very dry. These bonnets have made a world of difference, so I don't wake up with a matted mess.

(They might be part of hair care for black women but they were also used in pre 20th century Britain, to keep hair well. They don't belong exclusively to any one culture)

Bonnet and a silk pillowcase for me

EBearhug · 08/09/2024 00:48

YeahWellWhyNot · 07/09/2024 22:34

I thought about a silk pillowcase but always thought it would look odd on the bed..I mean we buy sets but maybe we're just old fashioned / cheap!

If you've got the money, you could go for full silk bedding. Although it does mean that now even good quality cotton bedding feels a little rough. (Along with the pea under the mattresses.)

I plait my hair, else it gets too hot round my neck.

Floatlikeafeather2 · 08/09/2024 01:14

I have bum length hair and I don't do anything with it at night. In fact, the contrary - I breathe a sigh of relief when I let my hair down at night. I can't imagine anything worse than having it tied up when I'm trying to relax and be comfortable in bed. It's never been a problem. It just needs a good brush in the morning, whether I wash it or not.

I think it's easier if you can brush it, mine gets tangled and fuzzy unless I keep it contained! But it's curly so I don't brush it
