To ask what your kids have for breakfast?

Sorry, bit of a boring one.

Can I please ask what your children have for breakfast on school mornings? I'm trying to get ideas for my son who has just started secondary school so I'm anxious for him to get a good breakfast.

He doesn't like toast, he'll eat cereal but isn't keen. I can get fruit down him if I make him, mostly bananas but they can't have any black on them at all. I've tried him on various homemade smoothies and he didn't like them. Absolutely will not entertain porridge.

Ideally he wants a pain au chocolate or a chocolate brioche every morning but I'd like ideas for something healthier!

AIBU to want him to eat a better breakfast and to ask for your ideas?

Small bowl of fruit and either toast or potato waffles and beans.

Scrambled eggs in the microwave with toast or crumpet and some fruit

IggyAce · 04/09/2024 14:52

My son make himself scrambled egg, or he has a couple of scotch pancakes.

longdistanceclaraclara · 04/09/2024 14:52

Dts are going into y9. They rarely eat breakfast, sometime grab a yogurt / banana or brioche on the way out. I didn't eat breakfast and still don't so I don't push it. They seem to make up for it with a bagel at break.

Do you have a toaster/air fryer and microwave? Takes moments.

Wellingtonwombles · 04/09/2024 14:56

Google date and banana flapjacks. Basically mashed banana, chopped dates, olive oil, cinnamon, oats and some date syrup. I also add whatever seeds and nuts we have. It's good in the fridge for 3/4 days and never lasts longer in our house. Takes me about 3 mins to make it now check into a baking tray and 25 mins in the oven

Also try my fussy eaters peanut and banana bread. I make into muffins

Very fussy teen breakfast eater here but she will eat these

Izzymoon · 04/09/2024 14:56

They are young so they have porridge with various toppings or wheatsbix basically every morning.
I’m never going to be the person to cook for a weekday breakfast.

DinosaurMunch · 04/09/2024 14:57

Give up and send him with a sandwich for break time?

Not sure why everyone is suggesting toast when op literally said he doesn't eat toast!

How about some of last night's dinner leftovers if you have any? Cold pasta? Whatever food he likes the rest of the time?

Calamitousness · 04/09/2024 15:00

My eldest doesn’t eat in morning. Never had since he went to high school. Still doesn’t now he’s left. Youngest prefers breakfast wraps.

MrsTerryPratchett · 04/09/2024 15:00

Mine has a pain au chocolat. She doesn't eat pudding or sweets during the week and they are low UPF. Always with fruit or veg and she walks to school.

MumChp · 04/09/2024 15:03

A choice of:

Brown bread / butter, cheese, jam, ham.
Oatmeal / berries, honey.
Fruit / banana, apple, orange.
Vegetables / carrot, cucumber, tomatoes.
Boiled egg/scrambled egg.

brunettemic · 04/09/2024 15:04

He’s in high school…why would he need you to do it?

FirstTimeHomeowner · 04/09/2024 15:10

I'm always short of time, so it tends to be chopped fruit, a squeezy yoghurt and a couple of flapjack bites. DS used to obsess over cheesestrings but now I've weaned him onto the cathedral city mini blocks instead so we always have some in the fridge, sometimes he'll have one for breakfast.

Summerbreeze456 · 04/09/2024 15:15

DS is only 7 but he usually has bread with chicken slices and egg. Sometimes he has yoghurt with cereal (he doesn't like milk) or I just make him a sandwich and some fruit to eat in the car if we are in a rush.
He takes a snack box for morning break, which tends to contain lots of fruit and perhaps a little pastry. They also get a hot lunch (two courses and a salad bar) but I'm well aware that he sometimes only eats a plate of rice...

CharlotteBog · 04/09/2024 15:18

My son is 15. I think this morning he had a bowl of greek yoghurt with blueberries and dark chocolate. I say I think, because he gets up before me and enjoys getting ready w/o me wafting about not being a morning person.
He's all into his protein at the moment.

He had a long period of having pancakes. I'd make a large batch of batter and use that up. He could do it himself, but I didn't mind doing that while he got showered etc.

When he was younger he would have porridge (I see your DS doesn't like that) or toast and ideally some fruit. I tried to steer clear of the really sugary cereals.

TheFoz · 04/09/2024 15:19

What about egg muffins? You can make them in advance and keep them in the fridge. Can be eaten hot or cold.

OP is asking for ideas on what her son can have.
He's just started secondary school, so is only 11. Of course an 11 year old can get their own breakfast, and OP doesn't need to get it for him, but it sounds like she's keen to support him as he starts a new school.

mumtoadhdasdboy · 04/09/2024 15:21

My son needs a decent breakfast as he takes medication for his ADHD. It can unsettle him otherwise. Plus the meds totally kill his appetite so he rarely eats at school. I tend to give him 2 eggs with 2 slices of bread or a chunk of baguette with marmite and some fresh fruit.

takealettermsjones · 04/09/2024 15:23

Youngest two have Weetabix and fruit. Eldest has gone through a few phases but at the moment is having an egg McMuffin dupe every morning and thinks it's great.

Musicofthespiers · 04/09/2024 15:25

Usually 3 scrambled eggs. He is a super fussy eater and doesn't always eat his school lunch so I like him to have plenty of protein. Beans on toast occasionally when he feels like a change. A few berries too. He's 7.

RaspberryBeretxx · 04/09/2024 15:25

Could he batch cook a baked oats or pancake bake type thing at weekends? Portion up and have a slice per morning. If you blend it, the oats are smooth if he isn't keen on the oaty texture. You can put some chocolate chips in it or even cocoa so it feels like a treat but it's not UPF.

Part of her point was she doesn’t want to have to cook. Clearly doing everything for him is part of the problem, if he just sits with his feet up saying I don’t that and I don’t like that, he’s never going to figure it out for himself.

IdLikeToBeAFraser · 04/09/2024 15:39

If he likes pastries, perhaps muffins? If you bulk bake you can freeze them and just take whatever you need out the night before. I do also make air fryer muffins regularly -t akes about 5 minutes to mix the batter and then 13 minutes in the airfryer.

my DS has ADHD and like a PP has to eat a good breakfast as the meds mess with his day time appetite. He often has cereal but will have a waffle or two alongside (we make these most days as this is DD's preference and it's a bit of a faff, but not insurmountable. Obviously, you could just buy waffles and stick in the toaster if you prefer). I make him eggs (or he does himself but.... ADHD so it takes him forever) a couple of times a week. And once every few weeks i do banana pancakes - they take a bit more effort from me but they work for both him and DD. They're probably our best breakfast in terms of being balanced but I can't be bothered with that much time most mornings.

Differentstarts · 04/09/2024 15:45

Usually toast or cereal. Sometimes crossaints, pain au chocolat. Sometimes fruit
