To ask what your kids have for breakfast?

Sorry, bit of a boring one.

Can I please ask what your children have for breakfast on school mornings? I'm trying to get ideas for my son who has just started secondary school so I'm anxious for him to get a good breakfast.

He doesn't like toast, he'll eat cereal but isn't keen. I can get fruit down him if I make him, mostly bananas but they can't have any black on them at all. I've tried him on various homemade smoothies and he didn't like them. Absolutely will not entertain porridge.

Ideally he wants a pain au chocolate or a chocolate brioche every morning but I'd like ideas for something healthier!

AIBU to want him to eat a better breakfast and to ask for your ideas?

Could you elaborate a bit more on his tastes ?
And, to be very blunt/realistic, your budget, and time (I noted you mentioned not wishing to cook in the morning, which is completely understandable ! But lots of things can just be popped in the microwave by him).
Does he like a typical English breakfast ? In this case making a Macdonalds type egg and cheese muffin the eve (actually they do last decently for two days or so) is quick and can be microwaved : just do the eggs in 2 mins in a pan, add a cheese slice, and into the muffin they go and it warms in about 15sec in the microwave.
If it’s more continental types, the impression I get from you OP, it’s pretty easy/quick/not very expensive to cook a pain au chocolat/brioche equivalent in a large format on a Saturday for instance, and it’s fine really health wise especially if you choose your ingredients well (the equivalent of those hidden ingredients in sauces for toddlers ha).
Then for whichever version you can add a bit of fruit/bacon/ whichever really, it does depend on what he’ll actually eat.
He’ll be able to cook them himself soon but I agree it’s a good time to start good habits going.
Feel free to PM me if you prefer for specifics, or on this thread 🌼

My daughter makes herself a batch of egg "muffins" for the week. Just whisked up egg baked in muffin pans, can then be frozen. Can be eaten cold or microwaved so they're quick and easy of a morning. She adds various different fillings, her favourites at the moment are guanciale and lots of black pepper or feta and spinach.

Hoppinggreen · 04/09/2024 15:52

DS is 15 and prefers not to eat breakfast, even if I offer to make it.
I can get him to have a fresh milkshake from the blender if I make it and just present it to him without asking (he would say no)

My son occasionally likes the 'protein pancakes' that you can buy in little packs, you can warm them up for fifteen seconds and add a bit of yoghurt and fruit. They're quite filling. You could even put a little bit of cocoa powder on to give him a chocolatey kick 😄

FourForYouGlenCoco1 · 04/09/2024 15:55

Either Weetabix or omelettes.

He’s in high school…why would he need you to do it?

🙄🙄🙄

Snapplepie · 04/09/2024 16:00

You (or he!) can make loads of egg/sausage English muffin breakfast sandwiches or breakfast burritos and he would just need to put them in the microwave. Or if chocolate is requirement chocolate chip flapjack or oat bake will last all week. I'm assuming that the worry with what he is eating at the moment is that it isn't very substantial and a bit sugary. You could just try adding to his current breakfast, so he could have a pain au chocolate but also some scrambled eggs and a piece of fruit. Or if you think about his diet across the week and there is plenty of variety, fruit and veg and he's happy with this breakfast you could just leave it as it is!

I think most things are solved with an egg! I boil an egg by putting boiling water for 1 min, then turn off the hob for a further 4 mins. Remove and serve with soldiers. I know it’s technically cooking, but it is extremely similar to making a hot drink so not really ? This is my go to breakfast. I also don’t like porridge but do like overnight oats as the oats have a totally different taste and texture; and I don’t like yoghurt but it’s yummy in overnight oats!!! If he likes it he can make up the night before and experiment with toppings.

Otherwise if you don’t want to cook and he doesn’t like toast, you are limited. If he is slim and not a big sweet eater I would be tempted to keep with pain au chocolat.

I have to watch weight for my boys so find that by cooking I can get enough fuel in them to sustain and have an enjoyable brekkie, without the sugary overload of cereal, of which they would otherwise snaffle through. So do think about whether you can add it in! I do quick and easy things like porridge, poached egg on toast/muffin/bagel, mackerel and poached egg, banana pancake (blitz one banana, one egg and some baking powder and vanilla extract then pour into a hot pan, American pancake size. Serve with a drizzle of honey) or muffins if I’m up early; 10 mins to put together and then I’ll grab shower etc whilst they bake. Sometimes they’ll have toast but they don’t find it very filling.

MWNA · 04/09/2024 16:02

Something egg related - cheese omelette or boiled or scrambled. 2 eggs.
Plus fruit and maybe a brioche. And orange juice. She doesn't eat much at lunch so I like her to have a good breakfast. I prepare it all and will continue for as long as she wants me to.

Bear2014 · 04/09/2024 16:02

Bowl of cereal, scotch pancake with a scrape of nutella and some berries and chopped apple on the side, pot of yogurt.

They are 10 and 7, tall and lean and play loads of sport.

Snapplepie · 04/09/2024 16:02

Oh, and also- breakfast doesn't have to be breakfast food- it might feel bonkers but he could really have any meal e.g. pasta, leftovers from the night before, a piece of pizza etc.

brunettemic · 04/09/2024 15:26

Part of her point was she doesn’t want to have to cook. Clearly doing everything for him is part of the problem, if he just sits with his feet up saying I don’t that and I don’t like that, he’s never going to figure it out for himself.

That's a fair point, but you could give them both a break for the first couple of weeks of a new school.

MarathonofLife · 04/09/2024 16:03

Make a stack of pancakes or waffles that can be reheated in the microwave.

You can make some lovely high protein ones with greek yoghurt etc.

Phloopey · 04/09/2024 16:04

What mine actually eats at the moment is a Quaker oat cereal. It's not perfect but he likes it more than other cereals and it's got half the sugar of special K.

Check out the other prebaked good in the supermarket. Brioche, pancakes, waffles. The choc chips one if they are lucky. Crumpets with a slice of cheese or something Philly (seems a weird combo to me but he likes it). Peanut butter sandwich.

Mine also likes cold hard boiled eggs. I peel the batch when still warm and they keep for a few days. Also beans in a ramekin with some bread, but that requires heating.

Noseybookworm · 04/09/2024 16:13

Mine liked poached or scrambled eggs on muffins, crumpets or toast, sometimes with cheese and ham too. It's not really cooking, takes a few minutes to poach or scramble, while the toast is in! Youngest son would sometimes have a tuna melt, can be done quickly in a sandwich toaster or airfryer.

Pilotingmyownlife · 04/09/2024 16:13

Mine all help themselves, from the following
Beans on toast,
Fruit,
Cereal (usually cornflakes and branflakes),
Croissant,
Crumpets,
Porridge,
Yoghurts,
Toast.
We usually have most in all 3 seem to ho through phases.

openjoy · 04/09/2024 16:15

Poached eggs on toast
Protein yogurt with fruit
Cheerios

Avocado on toast is our go to…healthy and quick.

this morning it was scrambled eggs and smoked salmon (Aldi).

I try and do different each day. Friday is often nutellla and banana on toast!

always a fruit portion.

ScienceGreek · 04/09/2024 16:39

Usually one of the following..

Boiled eggs & toast
scrambled eggs & toast
Cornflakes followed by a slice of toast with peanut butter
pancakes with fruit and greek yogurt

stormywhethers321 · 04/09/2024 16:49

My kids don't like traditional breakfast foods so if there are leftovers from last night they'll usually have some of that. A square of lasagne or a bit of cold roast with leftover veggies or a little curry on toast. They do all like bubble and squeak so if we have enough veg and mash to make it worthwhile I'll do that and they're good for a couple of days.

If there are no leftovers ti raid, they'll usually just make sandwiches.

Phloopey · 04/09/2024 17:06

Wow OP you are getting a LOT of toast based suggestions.

TBF DS is also a toast refuser and has always just subbed with bread or maybe a wrap. Hence beans with bread etc. Texturally it wouldn't work for me at all, but to him it makes total sense.

HanSB · 04/09/2024 17:11

Porridge cake is the favourite here, otherwise chia pudding, scrambled eggs in an english muffin, pancakes from the freezer.

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 04/09/2024 17:13

Breakfast that they sort themselves:

Muller corner and piece of fruit
Cereal - bran flakes, malt wheats or weetabix
Bagel with Philadelphia

If I am feeling benevolent and have enough time I might make scrambled eggs or porridge.

idontwanttoadult · 04/09/2024 17:19

Normally fruit salad with Toast / Crumpet or Porridge.
They have a Squeezy Yoghurt just before leaving the House too!

cookiebee · 04/09/2024 17:22

TOAST! Only joking, just joining in 😂. If he eats ok the rest of the time maybe just let him have the breakfast pastries he likes, he will be ok. But also someone upthread did mention maybe thinking outside the box and let him have foods that are not associated with breakfast, even if that’s left overs like pizza. Food is food after all, and it’s just needed to give him the energy to get going, he may eventually suggest other things he likes.
