To ask what your kids have for breakfast?

Sorry, bit of a boring one.

Can I please ask what your children have for breakfast on school mornings? I'm trying to get ideas for my son who has just started secondary school so I'm anxious for him to get a good breakfast.

He doesn't like toast, he'll eat cereal but isn't keen. I can get fruit down him if I make him, mostly bananas but they can't have any black on them at all. I've tried him on various homemade smoothies and he didn't like them. Absolutely will not entertain porridge.

Ideally he wants a pain au chocolate or a chocolate brioche every morning but I'd like ideas for something healthier!

AIBU to want him to eat a better breakfast and to ask for your ideas?

Ds(12) has either:

bacon sandwich
smoked salmon bagel
boiled egg and soldiers
Croissant with ham and cheese
porridge if dh is around because he makes it

and a bowl of fruit. If I didn’t cut up the fruit he probably wouldn’t eat it but I do so he does 😂

make a batch and freeze them then put in the toaster in the mornings
Greek yogurt and fruit
oat cakes and cheese
peanut butter on whole grain rice cakes

These look great. And great you can freeze and toast 👌

We always used to have Croissants on Thursdays (our busiest morning)

Mine has a pain au chocolat. She doesn't eat pudding or sweets during the week and they are low UPF. Always with fruit or veg and she walks to school.

Mine is the same, or a croissant. She's not a morning person, nor a breakfast person, and even persuading her to eat a pastry is a struggle.

In the winter, she'll have some 2 minutes microwave porridge occasionally.

We do eggs, pancakes (made of eggs, oats and banana blended together), waffles. Very rarely cereal. We add yogurt, milk fruit as desired to the breakfast.

DD14 either has porridge, overnight oats or a breakfast burrito (she sticks a couple of frozen hash browns in the air fryer, makes a scrambled egg in the microwave and adds grated cheese). The odd time she'll have cereal.

I make a big tray of flapjacks to last the week. Lots of ripe banana for sweetness and any tired looking fruit in the fruit bowl , oats, seeds and lots of peanut butter. It doesn’t set hard it’s more soft and chewy. Its very calorie dense though so don’t need much but it’s great for grabbing on the way out.

I recently started wfh and it’s a bit too tempting for me though. You may be more disciplined.

If he will eat eggs you can make scrambled eggs in advance and keep them in the fridge and just reheat when needed. Cheese added if he likes it

But where woukd be the fun and sanctimonious judgement in that?

It's cereal in this house, and in season/budget some of the more appealing fruit like melon or strawberries. DS is learning to cook eggs but that's irrelevant as he's a long way from waking up in time to make and eat a cooked breakfast.

Does he like a typical English breakfast ? In this case making a Macdonalds type egg and cheese muffin the eve (actually they do last decently for two days or so) is quick and can be microwaved : just do the eggs in 2 mins in a pan, add a cheese slice, and into the muffin they go and it warms in about 15sec in the microwave.

I do this but I'm not organised enough to make them the night before. I use the plastic baby feeding bowls that have a flat base. One beaten egg, a bit of grated cheese, some S&P. Microwave on high for one minute. Might take a bit longer if it's a particularly big egg! Lightly toast a muffin, turn out the egg whatsit, put it together and add ketchup. Wrap a bit of foil round the bottom and she can eat it while walking to school if necessary 😅

My oldest always had porridge or Weetabix with toast and nuts before school. Youngest has a bagel or Cheerios with yogurt, fruit and nuts. They both went through a stage of not wanting breakfast before school.

DS6: Greek yogurt, local honey, blueberries (specifically 6 because he's not a huge fan), raspberries and flaxseed sprinkled on top.

Seeds and grains are (should be) a huge part of our diets so by getting this in straight away I know I've atleast done SOMETHING. 🤪

DD 6 months: porridge with pureed apple

Absolute shit or nothing!

My 9 year old will eat porridge but won't have fruit in it and puts so much honey on. He will also eat eggs but doesn't seem keen for breakfast. Same with beans.

Both will eat shreddies with a shit ton of sugar

Toast with chocolate or biscuit spread

Pancakes with the above

My 7 year old is by far the fussiest, he often has nothing. I've tried flapjack and as a desperate measure bought those breakfast biscuits but he won't touch them.

Google date and banana flapjacks. Basically mashed banana, chopped dates, olive oil, cinnamon, oats and some date syrup. I also add whatever seeds and nuts we have. It's good in the fridge for 3/4 days and never lasts longer in our house. Takes me about 3 mins to make it now check into a baking tray and 25 mins in the oven

Also try my fussy eaters peanut and banana bread. I make into muffins

Very fussy teen breakfast eater here but she will eat these

Ooh do you have a recipe for the muffins? I think my fussy one may eat those!

One of mine isn't keen on porridge but like overnight oats made with strawberry yogurt.

Homemade granola bars aren't bad.

Date and wheaten scones are a favourite too - lots fibre and not too much sugar

Haven't read whole thread but I bulk baked a load of blueberry pancakes - I then freeze them separately for an hour, then separate them with some greaseproof paper so can take them out individually. My DD will then have one or two for breakfast with some sliced banana. Not every morning - most mornings she has bran flakes with a few sultanas but it does make a nice alternative.

Yep I’d make potato, egg and cheese muffins, made in advance and warmed up, or a breakfast burrito (scrambled egg, refried beans, cheese, in a wrap) again made in advance that he can microwave in the morning. Or a toasted bagel.

DS has home made porridge with maple syrup and frozen raspberries (which also cools it down) or Bircher muesli. I have Greek yoghurt with frozen raspberries. Would he eat any of those?

Like Pps I have a child who has ADHD medication which severely impact his appetite in the day. He also has sensory issues relating to food.

I try and front load a decent meal into him. But he will not eat eggs, beans, sausages, any sort of toast topper cheese, cereal or fruit.

So I will make him things where he does not realise the good stuff is a part of it but gives him calories. So french toast, which I mix the egg with full cream, ground almonds, vanilla essence, and honey. Loads of cals. A bit of protein with the eggs and almonds.

I also do a serious chocolate thickshake using full milk, cream, good quality vanilla ice cream, ground almonds. cocoa powder, crushed and strained frozen berries ( not enough to make the milkshake red as he will twig) and maple syrup.

For a very long while I made a version of McDonald sausage and egg mcmuffins. But then he went off them and won't touch them.

DH at the weekends makes nutella crepes with again ground almonds and vitamin powders.

Never met a teen who eats breakfast on a school day. Their body clock doesn’t wake up until 11! They make up for it the rest of the day and at weekends. Leave him be, if he’s hungry he’ll eat

My daughter doesn't really.eat breakfast. I don't like eating first thing and neither does she. Makes her queasy.

Thank you, it's about supporting him, setting him up and getting him on the right track to doing more for himself. He's slowly becoming independent and loving it.

I felt completely and utterly unsupported and uncared for by my parents so I'm keen to find a balance between nourishing independence and making him feel loved and supported too

Porridge with honey and a glass of milk / wholegrain toast with nutella and a glass of milk / weetabix with honey, a glass of milk and a banana / occasionally if I have the time he’ll get wholemeal pancakes (no sugar) with nutella.
