To ask what your kids have for breakfast?

Sorry, bit of a boring one.

Can I please ask what your children have for breakfast on school mornings? I'm trying to get ideas for my son who has just started secondary school so I'm anxious for him to get a good breakfast.

He doesn't like toast, he'll eat cereal but isn't keen. I can get fruit down him if I make him, mostly bananas but they can't have any black on them at all. I've tried him on various homemade smoothies and he didn't like them. Absolutely will not entertain porridge.

Ideally he wants a pain au chocolate or a chocolate brioche every morning but I'd like ideas for something healthier!

AIBU to want him to eat a better breakfast and to ask for your ideas?

Usually toast or cereal, or a sandwich with either peanut butter, cheese spread or jam. Sometimes it's waffles, croissants or pancakes. Weekends they will have boiled eggs.

LoveSandbanks · 04/09/2024 17:23

House rule here, nobody leaves the house without breakfast. Youngest (now 16) makes himself porridge using the sachets of porridge mix you can get.

ZippyLimeSnake · 04/09/2024 17:32

Is putting money on his lunch card to grab himself something at break an option for you? My eldest is super fussy with breakfast.. We are still in the “no milk in cereal” phase & he’s 14 🤣 He will eat things like toast, crumpets, crepes ect. But some mornings he won’t want anything before leaving as he says he just doesn’t fancy it. But he will usually harm himself something at break time, his school do bacon rolls, waffles ect for morning break. So I just add extra money on his card weekly for that not ideal but it’s there if he’s hungry…

Also if he will eat things that require cooking now is the best time to start teaching him if you think he is able to, I started teaching my eldest in year 5 simple things in the microwave like scrambled eggs, beans ect & he can now use the air fryer as well as the oven. I am still home before he leaves for school so I am here to over see if he does need help whilst I get his younger brothers ready for school.

I make a load of hard boiled eggs on a Sunday night and my two have them in various ways - usually on olive oil toast with mayonnaise and everything but the bagel seasoning, but egg mayo sandwiches are popular too, or just sliced with avocado and cucumber.

I also make a batch of madeleines with Greek yoghurt and mashed banana, sometimes with a spoon of Nutella inside

ZippyDenimBear · 04/09/2024 17:39

Shamelessly pm. Some great ideas on here!

My teenager daughter completely refuses breakfast and always has. She just has a snack at school at around 10:30am and says that's her breakfast but she's running me out of canteen money!! That is generally waffles, sausage in a bun, egg and cheese in a bun so basic breakfast food to be fair.

My 7 year old daughter has whatever she fancies on school days as I don't have any time to cook that early in the morning. Generally, it's a fruit yoghurt pot and we'll add extra toppings if she wants like granola or berries. She'll have avocado and cheese on toast quite a bit too but you said your ds doesn't like toast.

Other things she sometimes has:
Oatmeal
Bagels
Muffins
Crumpets
Scrambled eggs with cheese
Raisins
Cheese and crackers
Cereal bars
Pop tarts

Blondiie · 04/09/2024 17:42

Scrambled eggs in a wrap. Sometime with ham or cheese, or less often due to time, hash browns, and eaten on the go. Used to do beans (on toast!) but nobody really has time to sit at the table in the mornings.

Do you have a toaster/air fryer and microwave? Takes moments.

@Meditationgame

but then you need to clean airfyer etc?

who can be arsed with that in the morning?!

HowAmITheCatsGranny · 04/09/2024 17:45

Ds2 prefers savoury to sweet.. he likes things like scotch eggs. Or you can cook potato waffles in the toaster (just turn it up to max). I’ve made egg bites before which keep in the fridge for a couple of days. Or prepped sausage and egg muffins that can be heated in the morning (admittedly I tend to go for sweet granola bars in the morning and tend to eat the eggs for lunch!)

shellyleppard · 04/09/2024 17:47

Usually cereal/toast/croissants. Two sons aged 19 and 16. Eldest sometimes has yogurts or steak bakes 🤔🤣

Mrsgreen100 · 04/09/2024 17:50

I used to make a batch of buckwheat pancake batter and serve with blueberries bananas yogurt and maple syrup
mine didn’t like toast or cereals much
cherse and ham toasty made the night before and cooked in fry pan was my other go to
often eaten in the car on way to school.
mine would not eat sloppy things that early in the morning!
good luck
prep before helps

Terridactyl · 04/09/2024 17:50

Usually a boiled egg or plain porridge or sometimes toast and fruit. DC are 4 and 6.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 04/09/2024 17:52

Can of monster and a Kit Kat chunky.

Use a paper air fryer liner and bin it

MillshakePickle · 04/09/2024 17:56

We do a variety of

-Wholewheat toast with their choice of spreads
-Wholewheat Crumpets
-Chopped fruit with yogurt and nuts or muesli
-Pancakes (make the night before and pop into the toaster for a min)

  • mixed berries and cereal
  • wheatabix and milk with blueberries
  • Greek yogurt and honey
  • toasted sliced brioche
  • breakfast muffins made the night before
  • porridge with cinnamon, apples, sultanas and a tiny bit of brown sugar or maple syrup tipped with mixed nuts and seeds
  • Apples with cinnamon sprinkled on and Peanut butter
  • toasted bagels with whatever is to hand

If I'm feeling extra generous I'll make eggs on toast or French toast/pancakes that morning.

BeachHutsAndDeckchairs · 04/09/2024 18:23

He’s in high school…why would he need you to do it?

Missed this bit, yeh just leave him to it if he's high school age!

melonhead · 04/09/2024 18:26

I make a big batch of the 11 Madison Park granola too and they either have it with Greek yoghurt or milk or even take a pot of it to school for break time

Marchingonagain · 04/09/2024 18:27

Give up and send him with a sandwich for break time?

Not sure why everyone is suggesting toast when op literally said he doesn't eat toast!

How about some of last night's dinner leftovers if you have any? Cold pasta? Whatever food he likes the rest of the time?

"Not sure why everyone is suggesting toast when op literally said he doesn't eat toast!"

OP literally asked what our kids have for breakfast.

SmileLady · 04/09/2024 18:29

My two at secondary school will eat whatever we have in the house.
White bread toast, brown bagels, choc croissant, cereal, flapjacks, fruit.

Marchingonagain · 04/09/2024 18:29

AmazingBouncingFerret · 04/09/2024 17:52

Can of monster and a Kit Kat chunky.

😂😂

Positivenancy · 04/09/2024 18:31

Potato waffles (done in toaster)
hash browns (in oven)
fried eggs with toast
croissants (in oven)
Sausages (I cook them the evening before and reheat in the microwave)

Putthekettleon73 · 04/09/2024 18:32

My 13 yr old often isn't very hungry in mornings. I remember not eating breakfast at secondary but he he's doing that growing thing thing and walks in quite a way so I encourage him. A pain au choc is better than cereal in my opinion. As long as it's a decent buttery one.
Mine likes yoghurt so full fat and some compote is filling.
Or yeh cold leftovers! Cold pizza when we have it or cold fruit pie or crumble! As long as it's got some fat & carb and no crappy additives in it's energy...
